Lewis Hamilton Unveils ‘Winning’ Fashion Collaboration In Bahrain
Lewis Hamilton Unveils ‘Winning’ Fashion Collaboration In Bahrain

The 2021 Formula One World Championship kicked off over the weekend in Bahrain, much to the delight of F1 fans around the globe.Naturally, all eyes were on Lewis Hamilton: the reigning driver’s champion and widely considered the Greatest Of All Time, Hamilton’s dominance in the sport is unparalleled. After a few teething issues during pre-season testing, fans’ anticipation to see how Hamilton would perform during the first race of the season was palpable.Thankfully, Hamilton didn’t fail to disappoint – but we’re not talking about his race performance. Hamilton isn’t just the world’s best driver but he’s also one of the most fashionable celebrities on the planet, full stop. Not only did he wow on the track, but his pre-race outfit was particularly crisp and bodes well for his 2021.Decked out in all-black (just like Mercedes’ 2021 car), Hamilton looked staunch rocking some of his own merch and some chunky Louis Vuitton ‘Trainer’ sneakers. But what was really interesting about his look was the sunglasses he was wearing: a pair of Police specs from his collection with the Italian fashion brand.Beating Michael Schumacher’s records, making waves in the fashion world, bringing back his hair from the brink of death… Is there anything Hamilton can’t do?

Hamilton’s always been known for his eclectic taste in sunglasses. For most of 2019 and 2020, he could be seen rocking a pair very similar to these ‘Lewis 06‘ sunnies in the Police collection. Frustratingly, the pair he was spotted with before the race in Bahrain hasn’t been released yet, it seems – so fans might have to wait a bit until they hit the market in order to steal his style.RELATED: Justin Bieber Spotted Wearing Most Questionable Footwear & Sunglasses Combo EverThe Bahrain Grand Prix was yet another win for Hamilton – but it was by no means an easy fight, having to fend off fierce competition from Red Bull’s Max Verstappen who started in pole position. Verstappen came second with Hamilton’s Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas filling out the podium in third.Next up in the F1 schedule: the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix at Imola, on the 16th to the 18th of April.

Hidden Danger Behind Australia’s ‘Money Is Cheap’ Philosophy
Hidden Danger Behind Australia’s ‘Money Is Cheap’ Philosophy

Australia’s crazy expensive properties are the object of much spite. But as much as those who can’t afford them (read: us) throw barbs from our rented houses (characterising it all as a ridiculous bubble and hoping it pops), it seems determined, for now, to continue blazing into the sky.Speaking of astronomic pricing, the most expensive apartment ever auctioned in Australia sold last weekend for $20 million dollars.Situated in Notts Avenue, perched above the iconic Bondi Icebergs (with three car spots to boot) the place has doubled in price in about 5 years (it was previously sold for 9.8 million).Though it is something of an outlier (we’re not all out there chucking $20 million at things)… This sale symbolises much of Australia’s attitude to property right now: money is cheap. What does this mean? People have realised money in the bank is providing piddly returns and interest rates are very low. This is leading to the growing epiphany: if you’re not getting in on the stock or housing market you’re missing out.

16/16 Notts Avenue. Image: The Agency.
There are some dangers lurking behind this mindset though (beyond the usual ones of investing or buying houses unwisely). Going overboard with this ‘money is cheap’ philosophy could lead to people over-leveraging themselves to buy properties they can’t afford, which could have ramifications down the track (both for individuals and the economy).News.com.au reported last week that “Australian house prices are forecast to see their sharpest rise since the 1980s.”However, according to AMP Capital chief economist Shane Oliver, this might not be great. Oliver told the ABC last year we’re living in a “super cycle of debt,” comparing the early 1990s recession with now, showing how our level of household debt has increased over the last thirty years.“During the early 1990s recession, the level of household debt in Australia was around 40 per cent of income, whereas now it is close to 200 per cent — one of the highest levels in the world,” (ABC).

“Each time there’s a downturn people get worried about debt and pay some of it back, but before things go too far [into the positive], the Reserve Bank cuts rates and people start borrowing again — we go back to a new level of debt and it starts the cycle again.”

Digital Finance Analytics (DFA) principal Martin North told the ABC a lack of migration and lower population growth are two factors that could trigger the bubble to pop.He also said selling pressure will come “from mortgage stress plus investors seeking to exit.”What will determine prices then, is an arm wrestle between all these factors and the government stimuli introduced to offset them (and, to a degree, Australia’s ‘must buy’ housing culture).ANZ seems to have predicted the latter will win in 2021, last year forecasting house prices will rise 9%.To seek another perspective on this ‘money is free’ issue, DMARGE spoke to James Whelan, Investment Manager at VFS Group in Sydney.Mr Whelan characterized it all as a house of cards… albeit one he can’t imagine toppling.Mr Whelan said people’s risk horizons have shifted as they still seek to get approximately 5-7% return on their investment portfolio (which should be varied), in a climate where interest rates are unusually low.He told DMARGE we’ve had two generations of people get used to a certain risk vs. reward dynamic and now that has “come down from something that was very easy to invest in – 5-7% – where a part of your portfolio sits in that area [normally].”“But because that’s now down to zero it means that your investments… everything needs to shift a bit to the right [imagining on the right-hand side we have our riskier investments] to get more because people still need to get their annual 5-7% return to be able to live and grow their portfolio.”“So… people are taking more risks.”What are the consequences of this? According to Mr Whelan: more risk-taking investment behaviour (plus government stimulus around the globe to combat the pandemic) means money is freer: “A whole lot of money has been pushed into the market – what that has done is pushed asset prices – up so it has inflated the stock and property markets.”

“It is easier for people to borrow at a lower interest rate.”

The question then, according to Mr Whelan, is: “Do you think that our financial regulators are doing enough to ensure people will be able to repay those loans should the underlying interest rates go up (which they inevitably have to do, as they are not normal right now)?”

“Just as 18% is not normal (when it’s up there it needs to come down), 0% is not normal either – it needs to go up.”

“If the answer to that question is, ‘no; we can’t afford to have that changed,’ then absolutely we are over-leveraged.”On the other hand, the banks don’t want to foreclose “on an entire nation of people who can’t afford normal interest rates” either, Mr Whelan relates.“No one has a really good answer for what happens if that happens.”He also points out that there is a difference between the US housing finance system and the Australian one: “Right now usually what happens in a standard system – in America you can walk away, but in Australia the rest of your life is attatched to [this investment] – you can’t just walk away, that’s your entire life.”“Knowing that and knowing that if there were some sort of calamity and knowing you couldn’t just let an entire nation of people suffer… it’s not the way we do things anymore – not since the GFC when they decided to bail the banks out (and they decided to fix a pandemic using the same solutions they did for the GFC) – they physically can’t let things fail any more.”“By ‘they’ I mean every central bank and government in the world now especially if we’re all taking the lead from The Fed and the US government on these ones.”“If we were at a stage when people physically couldn’t pay this mortgage on their place then… there are varying [ways that could play out].”“I don’t think the people would be left footing the bill immediately but some future generation would be left footing the bill for it.”“In short: yes we are over-leveraged to buying into this property market.”“I would love to see a market and I think the economy would love to see a market that would be fundamentally ‘investible’ if more young people could buy their first home more easily and it was a place they wanted to stay. We don’t currently have that system in place and that’s a shame [both personally and as an investor].”

“It does really seem that it’s like a stack of cards but one that doesn’t seem like ever coming down.”

“That’s the problem. It would be nice (as an investor in things in this nation) to have young people buying a home and filling it with stuff – new stuff that they buy.” Instead, we have a lot of old people “buying investment properties at cheap money and renting them out.”

“Ownership of your own home is the fundamental requirement of a good strong economy.”

As for what the big-hitting Eastern Suburbs sales like the record-breaking one mentioned at the start of this piece will do to the market, if anything, one real estate agent has told DMARGE they should be seen more as one-offs, rather than something that will necessarily stimulate an increase in average prices.

“It’s resetting the expectation for people to spend up and to set a tone which is great and exciting but also potentially scary as well because everyone might think their place is worth 21/20 million now – it’s a double-edged sword.”

The real estate agent also told us: “There’s a lot of money in that tech space coming into the market now and they are willing to spend up and buy once in a lifetime opportunities.”“That’s why we’re seeing a huge intake in these double-digit sales taking place.”

“It’s relatively affordable to pay off 5 million dollars in interest. It only costs you roughly $100,000 dollars right now.”

What does this mean for you, practically, as a buyer?DMARGE spoke to Edward Brown, director at Australia’s leading real estate provider Belle Property about this very topic last year. Brown was of the belief that there’s no reason not to buy in this climate – so long as you don’t over-leverage yourself.“If you need to move, move. The housing crisis is only going to be caused if everyone sits back and does nothing.”

“The loans are very cheap. You can go and get interest rates for under 3%. That’s cheap money – you can go and get a million-dollar mortgage and they principle an interest for about $4,000.”

“So your rent and your mortgage on principal interest is about the same, potentially, if you’ve got the deposit to pay it now. Everybody focuses on property in the short term element – but what’s the long term?”

“I’m very much of the view at the moment that you want to be in and owning your own home if you can afford to.”

Another aspect to consider, when it comes to Sydney, is that, unlike New York and London, which are bigger, Sydney has a smaller number (read: a more limited supply) of ‘goldilocks suburbs’ which give residents the best of both worlds (access to city and the ultimate in lifestyle).

“It’s all about demand and supply – that have pushed prices to where they are today – they’ve seen a good appreciation in the value of homes over a long period of time.”

So even though $20 million for an apartment sounds crazy, it could be more sane than you think.

Image: Mathieson Architects.
The history-making $20 million Notts Avenue apartment sale mentioned at the beginning of this piece (which equates to roughly $83,000 dollars a square metre internally) illustrates this perfectly (if absurdly). As does Cameron Macdonald’s Mosman mansion (see: above), which recently sold for $21.5 million, after years listed on the market.Though $83,000 per square metre sounds outlandish, given the limited supply of apartments like the Notts Avenue one, it isn’t maybe as insane as you think.20 million well spent? You be the judge.

Australian Watch Expert Trolls ‘Ugliest Seiko Ever’ In Hilarious Email
Australian Watch Expert Trolls ‘Ugliest Seiko Ever’ In Hilarious Email

Everyone has slightly different taste in watches. Some people prefer a masculine, technical watch, like a Panerai or a Bell & Ross. Others prefer the refined, traditional aesthetic of a Cartier or an A. Lange & Söhne… And some like wacky stuff, like Franck Mullers or Jacob & Co. pieces.Regardless of one’s personal preferences, it would take a bold man to directly insult a watch to someone’s face… Or their customers’ faces, as it happens.Nicholas Hacko, Sydney-based watchmaker and luxury timepiece purveyor, regularly sends out emails updating his customers on new stock arrivals. These emails are prized among Australia’s dedicated watch fans, not only for the scoop on the watches themselves but for Hacko’s insightful commentary.Normally Hacko has nothing but effusive praise for the watches he’s trying to sell – but it seems the newest Seiko that’s landed in his lap has brought out the savage in him.“This is the ugliest Seiko I’ve seen in my entire life,” he starts.

“If you are thinking ”nice piece of reverse psychology Nick’ then let me be clear: no, I am not kidding. This IS an ugly watch, full stop. It looks wrong and bizarre.”

A closeup of the Seiko Premier Blue Skeleton Hacko is selling.
Admittedly, this Seiko Premier Blue Skeleton (ref. SSA399) is rather unconventional, to say the least. A blue dial is normally catnip for watch fans, but the stylistic choices Seiko’s made with this model… Well, let’s let Hacko explain.RELATED: Australians Are Finally Becoming More Adventurous With Luxury Watches“The cut-outs on the dial serve no aesthetic or horological purpose whatsoever. The only possible explanation for this disaster: made for [the] Japanese domestic market…

“Should you buy it? No, unless you are a weird sicko looking for a weird sicko watch.”

Ooft. Say what you really feel, why don’t you.As bizarre as the watch is, we’ve got to applaud Seiko for taking a risk and experimenting. In a world where so many brands just make their own version of a Rolex Submariner, it’s refreshing to see something different. Refreshing, like someone chucking a bucket of cold water on you while you’re sleeping.Besides, Hacko can’t be all that serious about how much he dislikes the watch. He admittedly has two in stock, “just in case you wish to give one to your brother in law.” He’s asking $499 for them – but can you put a price on b̶e̶a̶u̶t̶y̶ ugly?

British Airways Comes Under Fire For ‘Stingy’ Status Extension Policy
British Airways Comes Under Fire For ‘Stingy’ Status Extension Policy

British Airways recently extended its frequent flyer status for another year. So far so normal (for the last 12 months at least).

Where things depart from standard, however, is that not everyone is happy with the extension.

Various business class bloggers, enthusiasts and frequent flyers have taken to social media (and their own online platforms) to express their disappointment that not everyone will be eligible for it.

Blogger Inside Flyer wrote, “British Airways Executive Club has made an announcement that will annoy just as many members as it pleases. BA has decided to add 12 months to the status of members, but only those whose Tier Point collection end date falls on or before December 8th 2021.”

“Since Executive Club had already extended the elite status of members back in June – for members whose Tier Point collection end date fell between July 2020 and June 2021 – this extension only helps roughly half of BA’s membership. Crucially, however, BA has stopped calling it an ‘extension’ and is instead calling it a ‘protection’ of member’s status.”

Flight reviewer Economy Class & Beyond wrote: “British Airways are going to extend status of its Executive Club members. However, it seems not everyone will benefit.”

“The net result is that no British Airways Executive Club member, including Bronze, Silver and Gold cardholders will lose their Tier status in 2021. However, those beyond the dates listed by British Airways will not have further status protection at the moment.”

The reviewer also pointed out: “The number of Tier Points to qualify for British Airways Executive Club status will remain reduced for now (with a 25% less requirement).”

  • Bronze: From 300 to 225 Tier Points or 18 eligible flights
  • Silver: From 600 to 450 Tier Points or 37 eligible flights
  • Gold: From 1500 to 1125 Tier Points

Immanuel Debeer, full time luxury travel hacker, and founder of Flight Hacks, told DMARGE: “Most people who have status with BA haven’t been able to fly much over the last 12 months. Status was extended last year but for obvious reasons it made sense to do it again this year. However, they left out a large part of their member base by excluding those who have their renewal date in the first part of 2022.”

“It just feels stingy to me considering everyone would love to get out there and fly but if you’re in the UK, it’s just not a viable option.”

Niall Rooney, Head of the British Airways Executive Club, said of the changes, “As we await the Government’s decision in April and plan for the safe restart of travel as soon as possible, we want to thank our Executive Club members for their loyalty during the most difficult time in the airline’s history.”

“We know many of our members haven’t been able to travel, but today’s news means they can keep their benefits for longer and use them when they’re able to fly again. We hope this complements a number of measures we’ve already introduced, including our book with confidence commitment, which provides flexibility and reassurance for our customers.”

From a passenger’s point of view it may be a travesty, but from an economic point of view, well, airlines may have to start drawing the line somewhere.

LeBron James Undergoes ‘Space-Age’ Rehab To Speed Up On-Court Return
LeBron James Undergoes ‘Space-Age’ Rehab To Speed Up On-Court Return

Professional athletes and injuries are inevitable. No matter how tough, strong and skilled a player or athlete may be, at some point in their career they’re likely to suffer some kind of setback.Injuries can, of course, range from minimal and worry-free to those far more serious and potentially career-ending. Fortunately, with the advancement of medical techniques and practices, athletes are now able to receive space-age (looking) treatments to help get them back to playing sooner than ever. One such athlete who appears to be undergoing his own futuristic rehabilitation program is Los Angeles Lakers poster boy LeBron James. The multi-championship winning small forward and arguably one of the greatest players to have ever graced the court, suffered a nasty high-ankle sprain during a match between LA Lakers and Atlanta Hawks on Saturday 19 March 2021.Reports claim James could be out for at least four to six weeks, but potentially longer, depending on the seriousness of the injury. To help him along with his recovery, James recently posted a video to his Instagram story that showed him lying in a ‘bio dome bed’. He added he would be in the bed – or at least be using it for periods each day – for the next few weeks.

James reportedly suffered a high-ankle sprain, a far less common sprain compared to a lateral ankle sprain – the kind we’ve likely all encountered when playing sport, or walking down the stairs slightly wrong. A high-ankle sprain, by its very name, occurs higher up the leg, and according to The Prehab Guysaccount for only 10 per cent of ankle sprains worldwide.Healthline adds a high-ankle sprain “is a sprain in the upper ligaments of your ankle, above the ankle itself. These ligaments are attached to the fibula and tibia, stabilising the entire area for actinides like running and walking.”Common treatments for high ankle sprains include much-needed rest, ice and anti-inflammatory medication. In LeBron’s case, his bio dome bed – which we believe to be similar to a Hyperbaric Oxygen Chamber (similar to the one Michael Jackson used to allegedly attempt to prolong his life) – has been known to help speed up the healing process. There is currently not a huge amount of information or study into the effects such a chamber can have on injuries – suggesting it is still very much a futuristic, or ‘space-age’ technology.  However, one study dates back to 1995 and looked into the specific effects of HBO (Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy) on ankle sprains, and found athletes returned to their sport “approximately 30% faster than the control group after an ankle sprain.”A report from 2011 collated various other studies and examinations of HBO, and added “Within hyperbaric therapies, hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO) is the administration of pure oxygen (100%) at pressures greater than atmospheric pressure, i.e. more than 1 atmosphere absolute (ATA), for therapeutic reasons.”“The application of HBO for the treatment of sports injuries has recently been suggested in the scientific literature as a modality of therapy either as a primary or an adjunct treatment.”

“HBO seems to be promising in the recovery of injuries for high-performance athletes; however, there is a need for larger samples, randomized, controlled, double-blinded clinical trials combined with studies using animal models so that its effects and mechanisms can be identified to confirm that it is a safe and effective therapy for the treatment of sports injuries.”

Finally, a 2005 study conducted by Ishii et al recorded the effects of HBO treatment on seven Olympic athletes, these athletes “received HBO treatment for 30–40 minutes at 1.3 ATA with a maximum of six treatments per athlete and an average of two. It was found that all athletes benefited from the HBO treatment presenting faster recovery rates.”While it hasn’t been confirmed LeBron is receiving the same treatment, we can certainly speculate, as he’ll no doubt be wanting to get back to match fitness as soon as possible to help his team fight to top the table of the Western Conference. The LA Lakers are currently sitting in fourth place, five points behind leaders Utah Jazz.

‘Puppy Smuggling’: The European Flight Freedom Australians Miss Out On
‘Puppy Smuggling’: The European Flight Freedom Australians Miss Out On

There are a lot of freedoms Europeans have no one else does. But it’s not all drinking in public (without the need for a brown paper bag) and going topless on the beach. The liberties extend to up in the air too.

In Australia, pet dogs can only fly in the hold, generally, as cargo. This involves making a booking with the freight division of the airline, dropping them off at the cargo terminal, waving goodbye as they’re loaded along with cargo into the hold, and then you picking them up at the cargo terminal at the other end after the flight.

“Only service dogs can be carried into the passenger cabin of the aircraft,” Qantas states. Likewise, Virgin Australia’s website reads: “Working in collaboration with pet agents, we are able to accept cats and dogs to travel in the cargo hold of our aircraft.”

In contrast, various European airlines, including Swiss Air, permit pets in the cabin.

Professional snowboarder, Olympic bronze medalist, 3x World Champion, 6x XGames medalist and US Open Champion from Australia Scotty James on a recent flight from New York to Switzerland showed Those Down Under what they are missing out on, posting a bunch of pictures and clips of his furry pal and posting them to Instagram.

James was flying from New York to Switzerland. Further posts show he (and his furry friend) made it safe and sound.

Swiss Air pet rules read as follows: “Each passenger is permitted to take a maximum of two animals with him/her (in an approved transport container).”

Transport can be in the cabin and/or in the hold, the rules page continues:

  • A maximum of two animals (dog or cat) in the cabin
  • One animal (dog or cat) in the cabin and one animal in the hold
  • A maximum of two animals in the hold (in one or two approved transport containers)
  • Dogs and cats are only permitted to travel from the age of 12 weeks and above. The same rule applies to flights from the USA. For flights to the USA, travel is only permitted from the age of 16 weeks and above

It’s also worth noting not every European airline has this policy. Ryanair, for instance, does not allow pets on board, unless they are assistance or guide dogs.

It’s also worth noting that Swiss Air’s policy is set to change. A new announcement on the carrier’s website reads: “Effective 1 January 2020, the transport of snub-nosed (brachycephalic) breeds of hares, rabbits, dogs, and cats in the cargo hold will be restricted. This does not apply to bookings already confirmed for travel after 1 January 2020.”

Perhaps the golden era of doggy travel will soon go the way of the golden era of business class? Only time (and yelps per A330) will tell…

Floyd Mayweather’s Unbelievable Fashion Transformation Will Leave You Speechless
Floyd Mayweather’s Unbelievable Fashion Transformation Will Leave You Speechless

‘Floyd Mayweather’ and ‘well-dressed’ are four words that don’t often appear in a sentence together… At least not without a ‘is not’ between the two.The 44-year-old boxer might be one of the wealthiest athletes of all time but money isn’t a substitute for good taste: he’s regularly seen in designer clothes and mountains of bling but he very rarely looks genuinely stylish. Just take this bizarre jacket he wore to the 2019 Super Bowl – more is not always more…Which is why it’s always surprising to see him in a fit we might actually wear. Over the weekend, ‘Money’ Mayweather shared some snaps of himself relaxing at an art gallery, looking positively dapper. Arguably better than the art, too.Fans were also left speechless – one commenting that “Floyd stopped playing…this is style.” We’d have to agree, actually.

There were still some characteristically luxurious touches: a Louis Vuitton sweater over a turtleneck, Christian Louboutin Chelsea boots and a diamond-encrusted Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Chronograph (ref. 26403BC.ZZ.8044BC.01) worth a cool $1.4 million…But the outfit is surprisingly cohesive. When you’re as buff as Mayweather, it’s hard dressing conservatively like this without looking a bit foolish (a mistake Mayweather’s former rival Conor McGregor is sometimes guilty of). Actually, we’re getting more David Beckham vibes with this outfit, particularly with that newsboy cap he’s rocking.RELATED: David Beckham’s ‘Peaky Blinders’ Look Sums Up The Best Of British StyleMayweather’s been in the headlines once again after the legendary Oscar De La Hoya formally announced his return to boxing, as well as his desire to face off against Mayweather. De La Hoya and Mayweather notably fought back in 2007 – a bout that at the time was the biggest money-making fight of all time that ended in a split decision in Mayweather’s favour.Mayweather had called for De La Hoya to fight him in 2015, but he had said at the time that he was planning to stick with his 2008 retirement, Fox News reports. This exciting news of a rematch comes off the back of Mayweather’s fight against controversial YouTube star Logan Paul last month getting indefinitely postponed.
