Every man should own at least one backpack. Whether it’s for your commute to work or you’re planning on hiking through the mountains for a few days.

This guide will help you navigate this expanding portion of the accessories market, whether you just need a pack for early morning pre-season training or a replacement for your old-fogey briefcase that makes you feel like the 50-something accountant you see on the bus every morning.

Best Backpacks FAQs

What is the best material for a backpack?

Nylon has been the go-to staple material for backpacks for men. It’s strong yet lightweight and more weather- and rot-resistant than cotton. Nylon backpacks are also more durable and affordable than polyester.

What size backpack do I need?

Ideally, the best backpacks should be spacious enough to hold just a little more than what you need it for. It should also be comfortable to carry. For size and capacity, it can range from 6 to 50 liters. If you’re wanting a backpack for a daily commute, you only need a small backpack whereas for travel you’ll need a large one.

What is the difference between internal and external backpacks?

Most internal backpacks only have one huge compartment, with several zippered access points. External frame backpacks have several smaller compartments to make organisation easier. You may also attach extra gear to the frame, like a sleeping bag.

What would you do for travel? Clean grease traps? Flaunt your curves on a sugar daddy website? Sell your house? Live stream your wedding?

Everyone has a price.

Anyhow, once you’re on the gravy train, whether it’s a week in Polignano a Mare or a year bouncing around Europe, you’re going to want to juice it pulp and all.

That involves mentally flatlining, physically relaxing and making your friends as jealous as possible. What it doesn’t is staying in sub-standard accommodation and whinging.

Unfortunately, if Tripadvisor is anything to go by, that’s what a lot of tourists (both Australian and otherwise) end up doing.

How did we realise this? Well, we were innocently strolling through reviews of Polignano a Mare properties, doing a little vicarious living, as one does at 5 pm on a Tuesday afternoon, and what we found made our eyes roll.

Tourists complaining in paradise.

While Lord Of The Flies proves idyllic surroundings don’t guarantee a happy community, we thought given its amenities, culture and relatively uncorrupt legal structure, Polignano was a safe bet to visit.

Alas, we found the sort of scathing reviews we thought were reserved for New York’s seedy underbelly, Paris’ outdoor dunny hotels and London’s most stone-faced staff.

While those big cities have more negative (and outlandish) reviews, and while most travellers admittedly sing about their Polignano sojourn, the fact that quite a few have mismatched expectations with what they get and what they (thought they) are paying for surprised us.

But first: context. What the hell is Polignano? Polignano a Mare is a town on Italy’s southern Adriatic coast, which the 557,604 Instagram posts with the hashtag #polignanoamare attest, is one of the most photogenic places in Italy.

Known for beaches like the white-pebble Lama Monachile, which is bordered by a Roman bridge, Polignano’s most famous feature is a cove nestled at the bottom of a cliff.

It also has a Museum of Contemporary Art, food to get IBS for, a Romanesque church, a 16th-century tower and a controversial city-wide cover charge (in peak season).

Oh, and it also, as we mentioned earlier, has a few disgruntled tourists, whose complaints we have curated below for your convenience.

Let’s begin with a peak season (June) dispute from 2018. A family who appear to be from Florida came for the holiday of their dreams – or so they thought. Unfortunately, though, whoever’s side in the argument you take, their stay was marred by a misunderstanding.

“We went with the family to this hotel and reserved two apartments,” the story, posted on Tripadvisor, begins. “They were located in the historical center and the car can not enter, so you and your family must drag the luggage several blocks. Then there is no parking lot. You should walk like half a mile from the historic center to the parking lot.”

So far so disgruntled.

But it gets worse: “The apartments are very small and with two levels with ladders so you should go downstairs each time you want to go to the bathroom. One of the apartments is in front of the square where there are celebrations until late so you can not rest or sleep until midnight and you don’t know which apartment you will be assigned.”

“The staff is very impolite.”

The apartment management’s response? “It’s true! Our apartments are settled in the historical centre, that obviously is a no parking area, anyway we have a parking lot 350 m far from the historical centre, so, just 6 minutes by walk.”

Snarky.

“You must drag your luggage for 50 m because you refused to be helped from the rickshaw service, and refused my help too, and I’m so sorry if you can’t walk even to go to the toilet.”

Ouch.

“Most of our apartments are typical Apulian houses, and you choose it, you can look at photos for each one, so is not our fault if you didn’t like what you chose,” the clapback continues.

“About celebrations, it was our sain patron celebration, traditional celebration and a lot of tourists come in Polignano just to live it, it’s a shame you can’t respect it.”

“In the end, I’m so sorry to be impolite, but we were a little bit embarassed until your sister slammed the door into my face.”

This is far from the only absurd dispute, with the annals of Tripadvisor showcasing some complaints that are harder to wrap one’s head around than Sartre’s Nausea.

One of our favourites is entitled “bad timing” and comes from a Mr Ramsay from Frankfurt, who took to Tripadvisor to share what sounds like a bizarrely self-made problem: “Middle of the day, crowded, wrong light to take pictures, had an espresso at the wrong place. Found nothing memorable.”

Finally, we have an even weirder review, in which the tourist claims to have been left hungry after a £1k bill at restaurant Contrada San Giovvani: “Terrible. Simply terrible. No other words.”

“Charged from r things we hadn’t even ordered. After £1k bill left hungry.”

Moral of the story? Maybe you don’t always get what you paid for. But if you do a little research before going somewhere (or chucking your credit card details at someone or something) you tend to get ripped off less.

Man Reveals What It’s Really Like To Date A Pole Dancing Enthusiast
Man Reveals What It’s Really Like To Date A Pole Dancing Enthusiast

Pole dancing is a slippery topic. Some say we must forget the burlesque stereotype (see the hashtag: #notastripper). Others say its risqué origins must be embraced – and not to do so is offensive to pole pioneers.

Either way, stigma seems to be the problem, not twirling ’round an inanimate object (whether for exercise or to express your sexuality).

Whatever the case, statistics show, despite pole’s ~reputation~ (perhaps because of it), it is quickly growing as a hobby in the West with many women (and some men) finding benefits for their mental and physical health.

As The Economist’s 1843 Magazine puts it: “What began as circus sideshow performed by women in the 1920s, found its seedier side in the 1960s and took off as a fitness fad in the noughties is now on its way to becoming a sport.”

As for Australia, Dr Joanna Nicholas, from the UWA School of Human Sciences wrote in 2018, “In the past decade we’ve seen an increase in its popularity, with four studios in 2004 in Australia growing to at least 118 in 2018.”

Pole in Australia is now a gentrified mix of East and West; consisting of everyone from Sydney mums, Byron Bay hipsters, muscular gymnasts and your more traditional ‘Spearmint Rhino’ employees.

But when you tell someone your girlfriend does pole, they immediately picture a club in the Bronx, and the tired old jokes begin.

“Lucky you.”

“Does she pay them or do they pay her?”

Etc.

However, the fact remains that pole dancing as a sport has physical benefits many others don’t: it combines cardio with muscle building, flexibility, rhythm and – crucially – community (something F45’s insane monetisation could be a blueprint for).

While “what it’s like to pole dance” was breaking ground as a news story ten years ago, we are yet to see much coverage – even now – of what it’s like to date someone who does (non professionally). So: here’s what it’s like – according to yours truly at DMARGE.

You have to put your money where your mouth is

Sold yourself as ~woke~? Now you have to prove it.

You stop getting excited every time a lingerie looking package arrives off Amazon

Spoiler: it’s not for you.

You come to accept it’s more than just exercise…

We’re all suckers for a bit of validation.

They suddenly develop a fondness for early oughts rap

Back to 2002 we go.

You get reprimanded if you ever miss a showcase

But you also get told not to come again if you pay too much attention to anyone else’s performance…

You get used to thorny discussions

As Vice wrote in 2018, “Pole studio owners are making money off of a culture and simultaneously distancing themselves from it.” True or false?

You start to feel inadequate about the size of your pole

Self-explanatory.

Radical New Proposal In Amsterdam’s War On Tourists
Radical New Proposal In Amsterdam’s War On Tourists

Amsterdam may be a melting pot of art and culture, but it’s known for sex and spliffs.

So: it’s no surprise Amsterdam Mayor Femke Halsema’s “total weed ban for tourists” has sent travellers into a tailspin.

Of course, the Van Gogh museum, the Vondelpark, the Anne Frank House and Dam Square will still be there. As will the city’s incredible architecture, stunning canals, parks and nature.

But as Happy Mag and Pedestrian TV report, that’s not what brings so many visitors to the city every year. So, why the change? Well, it turns out Mayor Halsema isn’t interested in boosting tourist numbers. Instead, she wants to increase the quality.

“The city’s Mayor, Femke Halsema, wishes to address the issue of drug and sex culture that so many associate with Amsterdam,” Happy Mag reports. “The conversation struck after results of a recent survey emerged, revealing that 30-50% of tourists would be less likely to visit if they couldn’t access weed.”

“Normally a decline in tourism is a bad thing, but Amsterdam sees many more tourists than they can handle. The city is only built to fit a million people, but with over 17 million foreigners flocking in to see the Red Light District and enjoy the relaxed laws of the city, Amsterdam is struggling to cope.”

Predictably, tourists are not enamoured by the proposed change. From “don’t ruin one of the best cities in the world!!” to “would kill the city off if they did this” Twitter was full of Space Cadets putting their opinion forward.

Before you rush to book your flights though, it’s worth remembering the city has discussed banning weed numerous times in the past, and the decision has never stood.

In fact, going back through the “Amsterdam weed ban” Twitter search history, you see the same discussion play out every couple of years, with the latest rollback of the proposal coming in 2012…

… and the latest ban suggestion coming in 2014.

As they say: there’s nothing new under the sun.

Lebron James Rescues Fashion Faux Pas With $250,000 Richard Mille
Lebron James Rescues Fashion Faux Pas With $250,000 Richard Mille

If there’s one thing that sets the sporting world alight, it’s rivalries. Whether it be between teams, players or managers, fans love to worship their own and despise the ground their rivals walk on.

What you wouldn’t expect though, is for one of the biggest names in sport to wear clothing associated with a rival team. But that’s exactly what LeBron James has done. Turning up at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California on Sunday 23rd February 2020 for his game against the Boston Celtics, the man widely regarded as the best player to ever grace the NBA was spotted wearing a New York Yankees snapback cap.

https://www.instagram.com/p/B87pi-2AnBY/

The image, posted to the Lakers’ official Instagram page, received a great deal of criticism from fans, with the top-rated comment saying “Take that hat off and we good”, while others add “Take that hat off wtf?” and “Take off that hat! Cmon King!”. While New York and Los Angeles aren’t officially recognised as sworn enemies in the NBA, the East and West coasts haven’t always seen eye-to-eye. Some users claim he chose his hat because New York and Boston are rivals, and with his team playing the Boston Celtics, it’s a natural choice.

Headwear faux-pas aside, LeBron successfully rescues his outfit with a standout Richard Mille on his wrist. The Swiss watch brand is known for producing highly technical timepieces, with many of its models inspired by Formula 1 and state-of-the-art technologies and materials. LeBron’s model is the RM 011 Felipe Massa, but we believe he’s swapped the strap for a smoother yellow version. Before the strap change, James would have forked out A$250,000 for the watch, but the new strap could have cost somewhere in the region of A$1,000.

He’s spared no expense on the rest of his outfit either, pairing a khaki Maison Margiela sweatshirt – we can’t find LeBron’s online but this similar black sweatshirt can be had for US$790 – with black jeans, Nike Air Force 1 “Shibuya” sneakers – which last fetched $600 on StockX – Louis Vuitton sunglasses, and a $65,000 18K white gold, diamond-encrusted Cartier Love bracelet.

Overall, we think this is one of LeBron’s best fits in a long time. The NBA all-star is frequently seen flaunting a range of designer brands when attending games, but this latest is a prime example of casual cool.

Fitness Coach Reveals Forgotten Training Technique For Huge Calves
Fitness Coach Reveals Forgotten Training Technique For Huge Calves

You stroll around the gym, chest chiselled, biceps bouncing. Eyes fall your way: nods of approval from gym bros, a fluttered eyebrow from your Anytime crush. Success.

All is well with the world… and then they see your legs. Specifically, your calves; pale chicken-little sticks in comparison with the rest of your bod.

No Bueno.

Neither for your health, your Mr Universe aspirations or your full-length Tinder profile.

So what’s to do?

You could consult a personal trainer (or stop training chest and arms to the exclusion of all else). But we’re no longer in 2010. These days we take our advice from Instagram and so let us turn to Online Body Transformation Coach James Kew and his page – which serves a dualistic nature of motivation and expert advice.

A gym buddy that never lets you down.

Here’s how to get huge calves, according to James: “Calves are a notoriously difficult muscle group to grow. As a result, many people adopt the wrong attitude and don’t train them properly then blame their genetics for their lack of progress (something I’ve definitely been guilty of!).”

So far so normal.

“The same principles of growth apply as with almost any muscle group!”, James continues. But remembering three key techniques, James tells us, will help you get from Cristiano Ronaldo in 2005 (stick insect) to Cristiano Ronaldo in 2020 (tree trunk).

1. Good form. Often guys like to jack up the weight on calves raises at the expense of their form. Bouncing off the bottom of the movement is only going to rob your calves of the tension they need to grow.⁣

2. Training frequency. The scientific literature shows us that spreading your training volume for a given muscle group over 2-3 sessions is superior to doing it all in 1 session.⁣

3. Overload! Muscle growth all comes down to progressive overload – aka getting stronger over time! Log your weights and reps and ensure that week by week you’re doing slightly more than you were last time.

Sexily sculpted legs await.

Hidden Tesla Feature Goes Viral After Catching Australian Vandal At Work
Hidden Tesla Feature Goes Viral After Catching Australian Vandal At Work

The world is full of wankers. Those that wear AirPods in their ears 24/7, those that pour bottles of champagne on their A$57,000 watches, and those that find destroying someone else’s property to be funny.

The latter is exactly what happened to a Tesla in Sydney recently, but knowing their value, the Californian car manufacturer has a solution to combat these degenerates in the form of ‘Sentry Mode’.

First launched at the beginning of 2019 for new Model 3 vehicles, before later rolling out to Model S and Model X models built after August 2017, Sentry Mode is essentially a RoboCop attached to your car. It uses the car’s built-in cameras – which are usually used to assist the Autopilot self-driving feature – to record any activity around the car when it’s unoccupied. However, it’s a feature that needs to be activated each time an owner leaves a Tesla unattended, and uses battery power, leaving many to not bother and keep their fingers crossed.

If you’re a non-believer of Elon Musk, then a recent video posted online – reposted via news.com.au – should change your mind. That’s because the video in question shows a woman keying a man’s Tesla in the car park of the Westfield shopping centre in Penrith, NSW on Sunday 23rd February 2020.

Fortunately for Darren Pearce, the owner of this victimised Tesla, he activated the feature after stepping away from his car and indulging in a bit of retail therapy. He would have received a smartphone alert when the cameras noticed the assailant moving near the car.

He then posted the video to his Facebook page with the hope of catching the key-wielding maniac, “Just got home from Penrith Westfield shopping centre when I realised my car had been keyed. Luckily it was all caught on sentry mode, it shows this lady keying my car clear as day. Please share so we can find this scumbag.” he said.

https://www.instagram.com/p/B5s6fZInEFq/

He’s amassed a great deal of support, with several thousand users commenting on the video, hoping the woman is caught and made to pay for the damage inflicted.

The woman’s motivation for the attack remains unclear, and there’s a possibility she keyed the car parked next to Darren’s Tesla as well, as she can be seen shuffling around in front of it, with her keys in her right hand near the bonnet.

At the time of writing, the car-destroyer hasn’t been caught and remains at large.
