Secrets To Dressing Like A Berliner When You're Not One
Secrets To Dressing Like A Berliner When You're Not One

The German capital of cool, Berlin is one of the most unpredictable, design driven cities in the world.

Since the fall of the Berlin Wall, which signified Communist reign, Berlin has moved on from a society of uniformed ‘sameness’ to a thriving creative hub full of individualists. Fashion, film and nightlife epitomise the stadt today, attracting a population of stylish youths and forward thinkers who run rampant the city streets.

As such, youth culture and urban wear are the bulk of the Berliner’s wardrobe which flips between iconic fashion decades like the Seventies, Eighties and Nineties – for an almost too-cool aesthetic in modern times.

Even the office and creative agency types have little-to-no-need for wearing traditional suits. A key look however is a Berliner’s outerwear game – a place where structure and formality creeps its way into everyday style.

At the end of the day, the Berlin man is an individualistic and doesn’t conform to any specific trend. Here’s how you can pull it off.

Casual Jacket Layering

Berlin and grunge go rebelliously hand-in-hand, retaining some of the reckless flavour of the Eighties when east Berliners tore down the great Berlin Wall. Today, the next generation flaunt their freedom with grungy street wear looks in mostly black.

Leather biker jackets or cotton Baracuta Harringtons (made famous by Steve McQueen) found the grunge style, effortlessly layered with black basics – from tees to knits to long-sleeve shirts – paired always with black denim jeans in slim-fit.

Red and blacks checks or punk-ish plaids are key signatures of the ‘whatever’ vibe, peeking out as lining of a coat or more offensively as a classic button-down tied irreverently around the waist. Let loose.

Winter Coats With Denim

Not quite formal enough to be deemed smart casual, the elegantly undressed Berliner thrives on sticking it to the ‘dress code’, working tailored pea jackets and waistcoats over washed out denim, matte leather shoes and scruffy beanies.

Even outerwear gets played around with, as men opt for functional, relaxed parkas or a well-worn knitted jacket cut slightly slouched, over a crisp white button-down and sleek tie. It’s common office attire for the Berlin creative, swapping a felt trilby hat for a snapback cap and his briefcase for a leather backpack. It’s expense, toned down.

Indigo Tops & Bottoms

While double denim is trendy in most fashion cities right now, the Berlin lads are taking notes from the Japanese, working allover indigo ensembles as street wear looks. The classically uncool look of matching denim is pulled-off in Berlin, with a vintage wash cropped jackets down up over blue jeans – broken up by natural hues of brown belt and leather hiking boots.

The other indigo feel comes from denim-look items; most specifically blazers in an unstructured fabrication that eliminates lapels and breast pockets creating more of factory jacket look that suit coat. Keeping the blue tonal emphasises the organic look, over washed-up relaxed jeans and retro sneakers.

Slim Suits & Unstructured Blazers

When tailoring finds its way onto the Berlin straße, it comes eclectically sharp with all the quirkiness in the details. Age is no barrier when it comes to sartorial style; with unstructured blazers in light cotton fabrics accented by shoved-in-the-pocket silk scarves and oversized bow ties.

Little things like riding gloves for everyday wear and swapping slacks for raw denim jeans, ride well with the Berliner’s mismatching of leather pieces, such as dark brown belts and tan shoes.

Statement accessories in zebra-crossing stripes don’t take away from the superior cut and shape of a Berliner’s suit, with defined shoulders and lean lapels worked into classic grey suits. Keep the suit slim and trim – it’s the only thing kept in line like this in Berlin.

We’re in danger of stating the obvious here, but the global pandemic is still wreaking havoc on countries including the US and the UK, where even though case numbers are slowly declining, they’re still astronomical compared to others such as Australia and New Zealand. That means face masks are still just as imperative as ever, proving to be an effective barrier against the infectious disease. This new daily essential has seen myriad companies release their own versions, and for those who want to add a little luxury to their lives, Tom Ford’s one could be unbeatable.

The American fashion brand is renowned for its pieces of elegance and quality, and their face mask is no different. As you’d expect, it’s made in Italy from a smooth and super soft jersey knit fabric. It can’t be classified as medical-grade however, but when you’re looking, to quote the brand’s fragrance, “F**king Fabulous”, and are still protected to a degree, it doesn’t matter.Available in an extensive range of colours to pair with various outfits. At $95, we agree it’s pricier than other face masks, but you can’t put a price on protection and Tom Ford’s face mask really is the little piece of luxury that we could all benefit from right now.Shop The Tom Ford Face Mask

Man’s Cheeky Luxury Fashion ‘Faux Pas’ May Be The Most Irish Thing Ever
Man’s Cheeky Luxury Fashion ‘Faux Pas’ May Be The Most Irish Thing Ever

Men will try anything in a bid to seduce a woman. The best term for the behaviour is ‘peacocking’. Just as a male peacock shows off its feathers to woo mates, the human male will invariably dress in a particular way or alter his actions (often quite drastically) in order to get a chance of love. Let’s face it boys, we’re all either guilty of peacocking ourselves, or have no doubt gazed on at countless failed examples whenever we’re out.One prime example of a man’s hilarious attempt at peacocking was recently exposed on Twitter by Irish woman Seána Grant.

Milan is widely regarded as one of the fashion capitals of the world – alongside New York, London, Paris and Tokyo – the Northern Italian city the birthplace of fashion juggernauts like Dolce & Gabbana, Giorgio Armani, Prada and Versace just to name a few.Zara, however, is a fast-fashion brand from Spain… So our Fenian bachelor playing up the Milanese connection is like trying to extoll the virtues of a Big Mac from Monaco.Still, we can’t help but admire his confidence (or pigheadedness). Sadly, his quintessentially Irish confidence and ‘gift of the gab’ didn’t help the poor fella. Seána is and was, in fact, married – so he was never in with a chance.Following up on her own tweet, Seána hilariously added “I want to socially distance from sheepskin coat & expensive t-shirt wearing men forever”.

“It was the blandest coat ever. But my New Years resolve that year was to try and make conversation with new people. A mistake COVID made sure I won’t make again because I’ll have no idea how to talk to people again.”

So much for the luck of the Irish…

Surprising Sydney Property Market Trend That’s Good News For Young Professionals
Surprising Sydney Property Market Trend That’s Good News For Young Professionals

You’d be forgiven for thinking that a global pandemic might be just the thing to take the heat out of Australia’s property market madness, but even COVID-19 (and the subsequent economic fallout) has failed to cool things down.Indeed, house prices across the country have continued to rise… But ‘house’ is really the operative term here, as newly-released statistics reveal.ABC News examined a recent report from Domain that reveals that while house prices in Sydney reached a record high at the end of 2020, unit prices have taken a hit thanks to The Spicy Cough:

“The median house price in Sydney in the December quarter was $1.21 million after a jump of nearly 5 per cent… about $13,000 above the previous peak in mid-2017. But the gap between houses and units in Sydney [has] continued to widen… [with] the value of units in Sydney [falling] about $20,000 from pre-pandemic levels – the biggest loss across all capital cities.”

The ABC story explains that the dip in unit prices was in part due to the trend towards remote working sparked by the pandemic – which all makes sense. When you’re working from home, you don’t want to be cooped up in a unit, space-poor and in close proximity to other human beings: that’s why suburban property prices have stayed high, and why the demand for property in regional NSW has skyrocketed. The weakness in the apartment market might not be good news for Sydney families or investors, but it’s potentially welcome news for young professionals in a housing market that remains incredibly competitive and inaccessible for many.

It’s that classic generation bargain. Young people are cash-poor but time-rich, whereas older people have the opposite problem. In this instance, it’s less about time and more about comfort. Older professionals might want or need the space and perceived comfort of a standard freestanding home, but young professionals usually don’t have the same space demands as established professionals – kids, pets, even cars in some cases – and they’re more willing to put up with a bit of discomfort if the price is right (if discomfort is even really the right term).RELATED: ‘Shagged’ Brisbane Apartment Could Be Australia’s Biggest Missed OpportunityThe other thing to consider is convenience. As optimistic as it might sound after 12 months of hardship, but eventually, we’ll see out this pandemic – at which point the allure of a unit that’s ‘close to the action’ will also become rather tantalising for us youngins.Time will tell if unit prices will remain depressed in the Harbour City. With most of our bank accounts looking rather worse for wear right now, many young professionals might not be in a position to capitalise on the current dip in apartment prices. Still, here’s hoping at least some of us take advantage of the uncharacteristic market weakness.

‘Are You OK?’: Sebastian Vettel’s New Look Takes Fans By Surprise
‘Are You OK?’: Sebastian Vettel’s New Look Takes Fans By Surprise

Ahead of the 2021 Formula One World Championship, the sport has seen a wide array of radical changes.Daniel Ricciardo has left Renault to join young gun Lando Norris over at McLaren. Ricciardo is replacing Carlos Sainz Jr., who’s replacing Sebastian Vettel at Ferrari, who’s replacing Sergio Pérez at Aston Martin (which was called Racing Point in 2020), who’s replacing Alexander Albon at Red Bull. Lewis Hamilton might be leaving the sport entirely, with his status with Mercedes still up in the air, too…But back to Vettel, who might have debuted the most radical change yet. After a rather unsuccessful stint at Ferrari, Vettel fans have been champing at the bit to see how he’ll do with Aston Martin – and earlier today, they got a first taste of what’s to come, F1 sharing photos of Vettel getting a seat fit with his new car.But it’s not the car the fans are worried about: it’s Vettel’s hairline. It seems the German F1 champ not only left Ferrari behind but most of his follicles as well, with the poor 33-year-old getting absolutely clowned online – bald jokes coming in thick and fast.

The bizarre look comes as a particular surprise because of how quickly it seems as if Vettel’s lost his hair. More likely he’s just opted for a buzz cut – a bold move when you’re already losing your hair.RELATED: I Got Brad Pitt’s ‘Fight Club’ Haircut & Now I Deeply Regret ItFans were quick to compare Vettel’s new look to Prince William, another European celebrity who in recent years has been losing the battle against his retreating hairline. A more flattering comparison that’s also been touted is that of action star Jason Statham, or Breaking Bad’s Walter White – “he’s going to cook some tyres on [the] track next year,” a fan quipped. One Instagram commenter had this brilliant one-liner: “dude went from Toro Rosso to Hairo Losso.”Others were worried about how Sainz might look after a stint at Ferrari – will the stress of driving for The Prancing Horse get to the Spaniard, too?

We just wonder what Hamilton’s thinking about Vettel’s new cut. The pair used to share quite an intense rivalry, with Hamilton’s star power eclipsing Vettel’s in recent years. Hamilton too used to look in danger of going completely bald – but unlike Vettel, Hamilton has been more proactive about his hair loss, with his current follicular situation healthier than it’s been in years. Looks like the Englishman’s having the last laugh.RELATED: Lewis Hamilton’s Hair Remains The Greatest Miracle Since The ResurrectionThe 2021 Formula One World Championship will begin on the 28th of March with the Bahrain Grand Prix, as the Australian Grand Prix has been pushed back tentatively to November due to the ongoing COVID-19 crisis. Travel restrictions have also seen the Chinese Grand Prix indefinitely postponed, with Imola returning to the F1 calendar in its slot, formula1.com reports.

Physician Perfectly Explains How Muscle Gain Is Key For Fat Loss
Physician Perfectly Explains How Muscle Gain Is Key For Fat Loss

If you’re someone who doesn’t like the figure they see when they step on the scales or wishes to one day drop a belt or jean size, we imagine the first step you’re going to take to achieve these goals is to put yourself on a strict diet.Diets have long been hailed for their ability to help us lose body fat, by restricting or changing the foods we consume. News flash: eating right is better than eating less. However, a diet may not be the best offence for weight loss, but the secret actually lies in the amount of muscle we have, and we should aim to gain more muscle in order to say bye-bye to body fat.Revealing what could initially be seen as contradictive advice is Dr Gabrielle Lyon, an expert physician and advocate for Muscle-Centric Medicine, a concept that can also prove vital in prolonging the ageing process. Appearing on American nutritionist Max Lugavere’s podcast The Genius Life, Dr Lyon explains in great detail how muscle is the key to shedding fat.Beginning by saying “muscle is the largest organ in the body, it’s actually not just for locomotion, it’s an endocrine organ (part of the endocrine system; the network of glands that produce hormones) it determines everything about the way that we age.”“When muscle contracts, it releases things, called myokines which travel throughout the body to protect the body, the brain, and they help with nutrition partitioning.”

Going on to claim that having muscle for aesthetic reasons is probably the “least important aspect” – sorry gym bros – Dr Lyon explains it is also our “metabolic currency, it determines everything about our body composition.”She adds that muscle is a key player in preventing cardiovascular diseases, Alzheimer’s and diabetes, and, speaking about one of her previous patients who battled with obesity her entire life, she says,“I realised at that moment that everyone is focusing on the wrong tissue, that we are looking at the pathological problem, we’re looking at pathology, we’re looking at adipose tissue. Most people regain the weight.”

“But the reality is, the solution is muscle.”

“By shifting the paradigm from the failure of the fat-focused paradigm to a muscle-centric approach, we can change the trajectory of ageing. And that’s where muscle-centric medicine was born.”Max is on hand to break it down into layman’s terms, “So rather than obsess over the amount of fat we may or may not be carrying you’re saying, that’s putting the cart before the horse.”

Further explaining that insulin resistance – when your body’s cells don’t respond normally to insulin, meaning glucose can build up in your cells where it isn’t regulated, leading to type 2 diabetes – “starts in the skeletal muscle, because skeletal muscle is the primary site for glucose disposal.”“However, everybody is talking about fat tissue, but that comes later.”

“Muscle tissue is like a suitcase, if you overfill it, things spill back into the bloodstream. Then you store it as fat, not first. So by optimising muscle tissue through resistance exercise, through really understanding the importance of high quality dietary protein, you can take care of this tissue that decline with ageing, that becomes more insulin resistant.”

In real-world terms, Max adds that if you’re someone who is overweight, “don’t worry about the weight loss, focus on putting on as much muscle as you can for your frame and your genetics.”Dr Lyon confirms, “You have to correct metabolic composition first, by correcting and making sure you have healthy muscle tissue, the weight will come off.”

“But by focusing on the weight loss, the quick fix, the fasting even, it’s not about the amount of weight you lose, it’s about the quality. So every time you lose weight for the most part you lose partially muscle tissue and partially fat tissue.”

“But if you do it strategically, the majority of of the weight can just be fat.”The remainder of the podcast is just as informative and insightful, and we wholly recommend giving it a listen. But for this piece of information alone, it could prove highly beneficial to more people wishing to lose weight.Putting yourself on a diet can be stressful, and you’re nearly always going to want to reach for the junk food as a reward – but one cheat day can wreck a whole week’s work – however, focusing on gaining muscle through strength and resistance exercise can be easier, and according to Dr Lyon, has far more effective results.

Cam Newtown Rocks The Most Over The Top Plane Attire Ever

Cam Newton, Carolina Panthers quarterback (formerly New England Patriots QB) and most unique dresser in the NFL, has always done things his way. From his iconoclastic social media presence (where he decides to type everything in Wingdings-like text), his dedication to a vegan diet despite his hard-hitting day job and irascible yet impeccable fashion sense – not to mention his prodigious skills with a football – there’s no-one else quite like ‘Super Cam’ either in or out of the NFL.Newton’s latest fit hammers home that point, the 31-year-old sharing a candid shot of him walking off a plane, looking like a modern cowboy: draped in a billowy, Western-print poncho; signature Meshika hat on his head; PPE on and a briefcase in hand, Newton looked straight outta Fallout New Vegas. We wonder what his fellow passengers thought…Still, it’s much better to overdress than underdress for a flight, as this outrageous first class ‘foot felony’ demonstrates.

Newton’s a fashion icon in more ways that one, setting himself an admirable challenge that more celebrities (or more men more broadly) ought to be working towards too.“One of my New Year’s resolutions is not to buy any type of high fashion clothing, that’s shoes, clothes – everything,” Newton shared in an interview with HollywoodLife.

“For the whole year I’m attempting to recycle all clothes to put a new look to it, because I’ve been known to wear clothes just once or twice then that’s it, and I’ve been doing that for years. It’s gonna be the challenge for me… but, I think it’s gonna be an interesting challenge that I’m looking forward to doing.”

RELATED: Welcome Arrival Of ‘Eco-Friendly’ Watches Could Be A Window Into The Future Of LuxuryThe NFL world is buzzing around who’s likely to replace Newton as QB at the Pats now that his one-year contract has wrapped up – Newton himself brought in to fill the void Tom Brady‘s departure from the team left. As it stands, Brady’s found much success with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, with the Bucs set to face off against the Kansas City Chiefs at Super Bowl LV on the 7th of February.
