Ask anyone to name a watch brand, and Rolex will be one of the first names on their lips. Few brands have the same cultural cache of Rolex: perhaps the most famous luxury brand in the world, models like the Day-Date, Submariner, Milgauss and Daytona are iconic status symbols and prime examples of watchmaking excellence. One of Rolex’s lesser-known (but no lesser-quality) models is the Explorer: originally launched to celebrate the first successful ascent of Everest in 1953, the Explorer is a very clean, very underrated watch, defined by its highly legible face with large 3, 6 and 9 numerals. It’s far less flashy than other members of the Rolex family and therefore doesn’t get as much mainstream attention, but it’s still one of the Swiss brand’s finest lines.Which is why it’s so odd that they’re becoming so hard to come by.RELATED: Rolex Watch Prices You Can Expect To Pay In 2020Popular British YouTube watch-content channel Bark and Jack recently discussed how the 36mm version of the Rolex Explorer released in the 90s has suddenly become very rare in the UK. Using Chrono24 as a reference point, they explored (pardon the pun) how in recent months it’s been impossible to find 90s-era Explorers for sale, yet older and newer releases of the watch are still reasonably common. It’s also odd because 36mm is quite a small watch size by today’s standards. Most watch wearers today prefer watches between 42mm and 46mm in diameter. Of course, fashion is cyclical: what size in is vogue right now might become passé in a few year’s time.Adrian from Bark and Jack’s theory is that either a single entity or a small group of dealers are deliberately buying up all the 36mm Explorer stock in the UK in order to control the supply. He hypothesises it’s in anticipation of Rolex announcing a new Explorer model in September this year when they make their yearly product reveals – although that’s conjecture at this point.Perhaps these watch buyers are playing the long game, and are anticipating that fashion will swing back towards smaller watches, and then the smaller version of the Explorer will become more desirable. However, that seems unlikely.Adrian suggests that dealers are “picking a battle with the market” and have singled out this particular Rolex because they can easily control its supply. It’s a common phenomenon with anything that’s collectible… Corner the market on a particular good, control the supply and jack up the price.

Artificial scarcity is a common sales tactic in both the aftermarket and at retail. It’s incredibly common in the fashion world, for example: Supreme sweaters and Nike Air Jordans are deliberately manufactured in small quantities and drip-fed by brands in order to drum up ‘hype’. Watch companies are just as guilty, creating multiple ‘limited editions’ of the same watch in order to keep customers interested. It’s a shame that the humble Explorer is being targeted because it’s a real watch lover’s watch, and it’s genuine fans who are going to miss out. People splash out on watches from Richard Mille, Audemars Piguet and of course, Rolex because they’re status symbols. They don’t really care about the history or engineering behind a particular watch model; they care that people know they’re expensive. In short, they’re not the kind of person who’s likely to buy a Rolex Explorer. But a genuine watch fan, who’s saved up years to buy a Rolex Explorer because it’s their dream watch, may lose out because they’ve been priced out of contention.Fingers crossed the phenomenon is simply an odd trend in the market and not just a concerted effort to sponge money.

2020 has been an awful year so far, particularly for single people. Online dating services are bloody loving it however, with more and more people turning to dating apps through necessity in order to have a chance of love in the time of lockdown.
The problem with dating online is that people more often than not handle themselves in a vastly different way online as they would in person. The anonymity and impunity that online dating offers seems to actively encourage people to behave badly.
To pick one example, unsolicited dick pics appear de rigeur when online dating, but we doubt too many online creeps would be so keen to get their junk out in public (although that’s a hypothesis we’re not keen to investigate further).
The worst online dating phenomenon is easily ghosting. It’s infuriating when you think you’re building a connection with someone only for them to drop off the face of the earth. The lack of closure and respect that ghosting entails is emotionally devastating and widely reviled… Yet people don’t seem to be ghosting any less.
There’s also an interesting school of thought which says you don’t owe anyone anything. But we’ll get to that later.
Iconic Instagram account @lalalaletmeexplain, which regularly shares viral dating culture memes (alongside cutting analysis of each one), posted the following series of quotes, which reveal an uncomfortable truth about ghosting which maybe explains why it’s still so rife.
View this post on Instagram
The British page admin, who describes themselves as a qualified sex and relationships educator, admits that despite their dislike of the habit, they too are guilty of ghosting.
“I’ve never ghosted anyone in a proper cruel way, I’ve not stood anyone up, or randomly blocked them mid-conversation, but I have definitely let conversations fizzle out by not replying, or taking days to reply. Instead of being straight with people about not being interested, I have pulled back and gone quiet, hoping that they will get the message. It’s cowardly, I know. It’s stupid too, because usually, when you tell someone you’re signing out, they take it quite well and then it’s just over. Whereas if you do the slow fade it causes anxiety for you both for days.”
So why do even relationship experts – who you’d think have the most nous when it comes to these things – occasionally ghost?
“I think some people don’t want to hurt others or are protecting themselves,” couples’ counsellor and Sydney sexologist Heidi Gee told DMARGE.
“Some people ghost because they have found that times when they have said to someone, ‘hey it was nice meeting you but I don’t think this is going to work,’ etc. the person on the receiving end has become nasty. Another reason could be that today there seems to be a lot of dating ‘options’…People like to keep their options open.”
RELATED: Study Finds Men With This Kind Of Profile Photo Get 25% More Matches
The Bat Kiss has also had a role to play in keeping ghosting well and truly alive. Many people, bored due to lockdown, have been using dating apps as a nice little distraction or ego boost during These Unpredecented Times, flitting between flirty chats they never intend to turn into physical connections. Once they’re bored with chatting with one person, they ghost them and move onto another conversation.
View this post on Instagram
According to @lalalaletmeexplain, people need to be less cavalier.
“It’s absolutely gutting to be ghosted, especially if you thought things were going well.”
“The lack of explanation leaves you feeling sh*t, wondering what you did, or what’s wrong with you, or whether they might have lost their phone. It leaves you in a state of stress, jumping every time your phone goes hoping it’s them, watching their last seen on WhatsApp to see if they are alive. It’s horrible.”
“It would be amazing if we could all make sure that we never put anyone through this misery, but also sometimes it’s just really hard to bring yourself to tell the other person the truth, so it doesn’t necessarily mean that the ghoster is an evil scumbag, they just might not have the balls (or vagina) to do it. This often has something to do with their reason for ghosting.”
“It’s hard to tell someone that they’ve given you the ick for an irrational reason, or that your ex has got back in touch, or that you don’t think they’re an intellectual match…It’s especially hard if the reason for ghosting is that you are depressed, or have no money to go on dates. This is why I always say that we don’t need a reason to get closure or to move on from a ghoster, we just need to accept that they’ve ghosted and move on.”
Their final piece of advice?
“We need to do our best to never ghost anyone and to remember that if we are ghosted then we had a lucky escape. What is for us won’t ghost us.”

Australians thought they had no hope of travelling abroad this year.
While the only way to leave Australia remains via a government exemption, Indonesia’s Co-ordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment, Luhut Pandjaitan, is fighting to help us visit Bali for pleasure sooner rather than later.
During an address to the Jakarta Foreign Correspondents Club on Monday, Pandjaitan said Indonesia is in negotiations with Canberra to create a travel bubble with Australia as soon as next month.
Comments made by the Australian government suggest this is absurdly optimistic.
That said: Indonesia is reopening its borders to international visitors in September, and is keen to include Australia – a relatively safe and profitable country to open up too – in the arrangement.
As The Sydney Morning Herald reports, in response to a question about the September plan, Pandjaitan said: “Well, yes. I think I heard Australia has a plan to do so [open travel bubbles]. They especially love Bali. We can consider that one.”
“We negotiate with Australia, we will see what happens. I think what they need from us and what we need from them, we have to negotiate on that. Their standards have to be to the standard of here, because no one can claim they are better than others.”
In relation to the floated ‘bali bubble’, Australian Tourism Minister Simon Birmingham has advised Australians not to “get ahead of themselves.”
“There is still a way to go in opening up travel with New Zealand, which remains more likely than other countries,” he said.
“With our international borders expected to remain closed for the foreseeable future, our priority is getting Australians travelling to other parts of Australia, where it is safe to do so.”
Especially given the recent COVID setbacks in Victoria and New Zealand, some argue the thought of a Bali bubble (right now) is laughable.
Not to mention: just because Bali may allow Australians entry, the plan would still hinge on the Australian government letting us leave for leisure – which is highly unlikely to be a credible option in September.
Australians were quick to point this out on Twitter, as news of Indonesia’s Co-ordinating Minister’s comments broke.

While a few lusted after a Bali jaunt, many more expressed their contempt for both the Bali bubble idea, and the way it has been reported.
Totally inaccurate, not happening. Sep 11 start date was promoted by the Bali governor, who in scheme of things In international affairs is the equivalent of the Lord Mayor of Hobart. All decisions in Indonesia are made by the federal government in Jakarta.

“That’s one def way to bring it back into australia with a vengeance!” one wrote.
“Given that you’l have to pay for a two week stay in hotel room when you get back you may as well just book a two week stay in a hotel here and have the freedom to move around,” commented another.
No way,
Kangaroo Island has more appeal, it’s pristine with much more to see with wildlife and untouched landscapes.Besides you will be supporting your own economy.

Michael Slattery (@SlatteryNetwork) August 11, 2020
That said, we shouldn’t completely write off the plan. As Liam Hayes from the Indonesia-Australia Business Council recently told the Australian Financial Review, Bali (and by extension, Indonesia) is unlikely to give up, as getting Australians back is crucial to its future.
“Until the Australian tourists return, Bali cannot be financially successful.”
Indonesia has a population of about 270 million people and is believed to have one million cases of coronavirus – significantly higher than Australia, but much lower than America.
Watch this (air) space.

The alpine rally is one of the most glamorous and time-honoured automotive traditions. Races like the Rallye Monte Carlo or Targa Florio have been instrumental in establishing the rules, conventions and vehicles that dominate modern motorsports (and our roads) today.
Bur rallying in the 21st century is a very different beast to rallying at the start of the 20th century. Today’s rally cars are highly-tuned, aggressively modified hatchbacks designed for maximum grip and power, and you’d hardly see a modern rally team pause for lunch somewhere high in the Alps – they’re serious races.
The gentlemanly spirit of traditional rallying, however, is still alive and well, with an Australian enterprise announcing the world’s newest – and most stylish – classic rally yet.
The Super Alpine 500, the first edition of which is taking place this 11th, 12th and 13th September, is a classic rally that’s set to bring the best of European rally heritage to Australia’s very own snowfields. Open to European classic cars only, competitors will gracefully glide their way from Sydney’s Centennial Park over 500 kilometres (and 1300 meters of elevation) to arrive in Thredbo’s Alpine Village.
View this post on Instagram
Reminiscent of some of the classic rallies of Europe, the Super Alpine 500 is as much about style and elegance as it is horsepower with entrants taking part in an extensive list of hospitality events both along the drive and whilst on the mountain. The Super Alpine 500 is a ‘shaken, not stirred’ kind of weekend, with entrants to be treated to mountain summit champagne and oysters (via private gondola no less), mid-mountain long lunches en-piste, whisky tastings, in-room care packages and an incredible four-course gala ball on the final Saturday evening.
Registration is open now, so if you have a classic car and you’re looking for a COVID-appropriate getaway this winter, we can think of no better way to spend your time.
If you’re looking for a classic car for the rally, why not check out this ‘evil’ BMW E21, this ‘beachy’ Porsche 912, or this tidy Lotus Europa.
On your marks, get set, go!

Your home can be a powerful source of inspiration. French Impressionist Claude Monet’s lush Giverney garden was the setting and inspiration for some of his most famous paintings – such as his iconic Waterlilies series – and Kanye West’s existential 2019 ‘Wyoming Sessions’ album series perfectly reflect the stark rural surrounds of the Rocky Mountains he cloistered himself away in.
But you don’t need to head out to the country to find an amazing home to inspire you. 31 Olola Avenue, Vaucluse (aka ‘Olola House’) nestled in Sydney’s exclusive Eastern Suburbs is a little parcel of tranquil isolation in the middle of Australia’s biggest city. Its expansive ocean views, leafy surrounds, amazing interior design and unique amenities make it the ultimate creative’s retreat.

“Olola House was designed to experience architecture, nature and capitalize on natural light,” Michael Pallier from Sotheby’s Sydney recounts.
“This residence is a handcrafted masterpiece with exceptional detail using sustainably sourced hardwoods, sandstone and limestone finishes, creating a tranquil oasis overlooking Sydney Harbour towards Manly. The home is impeccably presented with accommodation comprising of open plan living and dining flowing to a large entertainer’s deck and pond, marble gas kitchen and separate TV room.
“5 bedrooms, master with ensuite, built-ins and harbour views, 4 bathrooms (1 external WC) and 3 undercover carspaces… Set back from the street and enjoying a leafy outlook, this home boasts a separate home office with plenty of storage and an underground media room or music studio with its own kitchenette and air-conditioning.”
“Additional attributes include [an] internal laundry, 24-metre lap pool, 4x roof water storage tanks, wood-burning Jetmaster fireplace, alarm system and electric underfloor heating.”

You’d be forgiven for thinking this was some rainforest retreat, given how picturesque this leafy abode is. The amount of greenery that surrounds the property is remarkable, only the very tops of apartment blocks in the distance belying Olola House’s urban context.
The tranquil nature of Olola House’s surroundings is further bolstered by the masterful use of timber inside the property. There’s scientific evidence to suggest that touching and being in the presence of wood has a calming effect – but you don’t need a PhD to see how living in a house this nice would be a dream.
Of course, its pièce de résistance is its spacious home studio, perfect for a musician but also well-suited to any creative practice. You could use it as a workshop, recording booth or even a bedroom for a teenager who’s decided they want to start a band with their mates. There’s plenty of space for a four-piece to practice in there.

Many creatives have taken advantage of social isolation in 2020 to bunker down and hone their craft. While someone who’s truly talented will make beautiful things no matter where they are, a beautifully appointed house where you can escape from the world in luxury would certainly make one’s creative process easier, to say the least.
Heading to auction on the morning of Saturday 22nd August, Olola House is sure to attract some serious buyers. Check out the listing here for more information.

While Sydneysiders commute, Queenslanders contemplate the merits of a border wall and Western Australians curse everyone for ruining their chances of a travel bubble with Europe, Melburnians are feasting like kings.
That’s one interpretation of the latest statistics, anyway (on ground reports tell a different message).
The truth is, while there are a lot of stereotypes floating around right now (see: above), generally speaking, we’ve pulled together. And while Victoria is doing it tough, the rest of the nation appears to be acting in a supportive manner.
On that note, a Commonwealth Bank graph has just surfaced on Twitter, which brings to light yet another similarity between us all.
Victoria: on the booze #ausbiz pic.twitter.com/XiJcFziWeX
— David Scutt (@Scutty) August 10, 2020
Posted by @ausbiztv anchor David Scutt, the graph shows an 80% spike in Victorians’ spending on food and alcohol in March (when the virus first hit Australia and the country was plunged into lockdown) compared to the same time last year.
An ANU study shows Victorians were not alone in this, with Australia’s national consumption of alcohol increasing during the Covid-19 crisis.
The graph also shows, however, as Victoria endures lockdown 2.0, spending on food and alcohol is spiking again. It was up by about 50% in July and appears set to continue rising.
Food is now ticking just behind alcohol too, which marks a surprising change in Victorians’ priorities, with alcohol spiking after food in the previous rise.
On the other hand, given other gloomy statistics (not to mention supermarket scarcity), it’s perhaps understandable Victorians are getting their drink on.

Forty-one percent of young people (aged 18 – 24) reported feeling lonely as a result of the COVID-19 lockdowns, compared to the 29 percent average, a recent study by impact management software Socialsuite found, while The Herald Sun reports an average of 44 small businesses are closing their doors each day in Melbourne.
On the plus side, confirmed cases appear to be stabilising. We’ll drink to that.

BMW’s hotly-anticipated M3 Touring has finally been unveiled in the flesh, after a few years of rumours and leaks. And, while the final car is something anyone who has an interest in cars can get behind, the best news is that BMW has confirmed it will be coming to Australia.
The 2023 BMW M3 Touring is slated for a first-quarter launch in Australia, meaning we can expect to see it in showrooms between January and March 2023.

While the much-loved BMW M3 and M4, which launched in their most recent update in 2020, receive regular updates and can be had in various guises (such as drivetrain configurations), BMW is sticking to a one-option-only model with the M3 Touring.
When it arrives in Australia, the BMW M3 Touring will only be available with all-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic gearbox, which also happens to fall under the German marque’s Competition trim. To this end, it means the actual name of BMW’s superfast wagon will be BMW M3 Competition Touring with M xDrive. A bit of a mouthful, we think you’ll agree.
So, onto the numbers.
The BMW M3 Touring will receive a 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine, producing 375kW/510hp with 650Nm torque. The 0-100km/h time? 3.6-seconds, allegedly. It will go on to hit 200km/h in 12.9-seconds and continue to gallop to a top speed of 250km/h. Those who simply must have the ability to go faster can opt for the M Driver’s package, which increases the top speed to 280km/h.
BMW has shared the majority of the underpinnings of the M3 sedan with its elongated sibling, but to account for the extra length and weight, BMW’s engineers have tweaked the adaptive suspension to compensate.

Inside, you’ll get BMW’s latest iDrive 8 dashboard, comprising 14.9-inch and 12.3-inch digital displays, along with lashings of Nappa leather. Carbon fibre seats are available as an optional extra.
But, if you’re getting a wagon, you’ll want to take advantage of the practicality it serves up, and with 500 litres of cargo space as standard, there’s plenty of room to swallow some luggage or just your golf clubs. If you don’t have kids or you just don’t want them to join you on your drive, you can fold down the rear seats to increase rear space to 1510-litres.
While pricing has yet to be confirmed, we’d suggest you best start saving for the last six months of 2022.
The build-up to the release of the M3 Touring has been a few years in the making now. Previously, an exclusive report from BMW Blog (via Drive) made waves when they cited a ‘trusted source’ as saying the project has been given the go-ahead, and that we could see a batsh*t crazy BMW wagon sometime after 2023.
Many were incredulous until BMW’s M Division confirmed the rumour with a cheeky Instagram post.
BMW has only contemplated the idea of an M3 Touring (BMW’s way of saying wagon) on just one previous occasion, with a prototype build of the E46-generation M3. While that model did look incredible, and we imagine had it been made it would have sold like hotcakes, BMW never put it into full production. But now it looks like they’re giving the idea another go.
Until the launch of the official car, a lack of an official M3 Touring hasn’t stopped enthusiasts and geniuses from building their own versions, such as Netherlands-based tuning company Full Car Tuning. If BMW’s version looks anything like Full Car Tuning’s, we’ll be very happy indeed.

Nobody can quite work out why BMW has never seen fit to build an M3 wagon before. After all, its rivals Audi and Mercedes-Benz both have superhot versions of their wagons, with RS and AMG models respectively.
As BMW Blog points out, the latest generation of M3 has optional all-wheel drive, so is perhaps better-suited than ever to have its body elongated to propel families down the highway at breakneck speeds. Although we imagine the real car nuts out there will want to splash out on a rear-wheel-drive manual variant, should it ever come to market.

The lottery of life can be cruel.
Cristiano Ronaldo is not only one of the greatest footballers of all time and one of the richest athletes in the world, but incredibly good looking. His prodigious skill and insane financial success would be easier to swallow if he had a rough head, but god damn the man’s a looker.
Kicking us ‘dad bod’-toting men while we’re down, CR7 just shared a holiday photo that further puts the rest of the population to shame – showing off potentially the best rig in football.
Standing proudly on the deck of a yacht, Ronaldo looks like a movie star with his chiseled abs, cropped hair and short swim shorts.
Personally, we think it’s just inconsiderate that he’s pulling stunts like this. Give the rest of us a chance, why don’t you?
At least here in Australia we’re still in the throes of winter, and can hide beneath jumpers and jackets. We feel sorry for our Northern Hemisphere or South American friends, who’ve just had the summer body stakes raised to astronomical levels.
Ronaldo’s holiday is bittersweet: his current team, Italian Serie A side Juventus, was knocked out of the round of 16 of the 2020 UEFA Champions League over the weekend, putting a damper somewhat on Juventus’ 2020 Serie A win. It’s the 36th title for the Turin-based team, continuing a nine-title winning streak, and the second win since Portuguese national Ronaldo joined the ultra-successful side.
Never shy about taking his top off, Ronaldo posted another shirtless flex at the start of the month leaning against his personalised Bugatti Chiron, worth a tidy $3 million.
View this post on Instagram
Apparently CR7’s also bought another Bugatti to add to his collection: a limited-edition Centodieci worth $5.5 million to celebrate Juventus’ Serie A success, according to Motor1. That’s just rubbing salt in the wound at this point.
If you want to get a body like Ronaldo’s, check out his isolation workout here, or how he works legs here.
