You know how it is: you’re in decent shape, lift regularly and have your gym routine down to a tee. So why change it?
Because you’ve been stuck benching the same weight since Bob Hawke was in office, maybe?
Whether you are a perennial underachiever or recently hit a plateau in your training, pay attention to the advice of these personal trainers, as they explain the best way to go about hitting your next PB. Before we jump in, however, it’s important to understand why your gains have flat-lined.
Lack of progress in your bench press often comes down to your body’s protective mechanisms. As strong as your chest may be, your body intuitively knows it lacks the structural strength (stabilising muscles etc.) to lift a certain weight.
Charles Poliquin, a world-renowned strength coach, says it’s all about overcoming these neural inhibitions.
“Would you feel confident driving a Lamborghini at 200 mph knowing it is equipped with the brake system of a Skoda? Probably not.”
According to him, this is exactly why your body places neural inhibitions into action. “It serves the purpose of preserving your joints. If your biceps are too weak to protect your elbow from the blunt force of throwing a powerful punch, then your elbow is in trouble. And the body simply won’t allow that to happen.”
So what’s a guy to do? We spoke to Ben Lucas, personal trainer at (and owner of) Flow Athletic, and he emphasised the importance of maintaining appropriate strength ratios between muscles. Once you fix this, you will see your strength levels lift, as if by magic.
Specifically, he recommends the overhead press: “Presses are a great accessory exercise to help you improve your bench press because they utilize a variety of external rotation and rotator cuff work to make sure your shoulders stay healthy and balanced. Shoulder press (military style) and pull-ups carry over the best in my opinion.”
Other tips that may help you improve your press include:
Posture & Technique
Ben says the most important part of bench pressing is your set up. “When you lay on the bench, make sure your eyes are directly under the bar as this will help you set up the proper position and it will also help prevent the bar from hitting the pins when you are in the middle of a set.”
Fix Your Grip
“Place the bar in the heel of your hands,” Ben says, “So that you can maintain a straighter wrist position. Your forearm should also line up directly under the bar. This will give you more strength and stability.”
Find Your Perfect Spot
According to Ben, “The bar should follow the same path on both the down and up movements. Make sure you are lowering the bar to mid- chest or the nipple line for full range of motion presses.”
Work On Your Abs, Traps & Lower Back
This one plays into what we were discussing earlier – having well-proportioned body and strength ratios. “If you want to move bigger loads, you need to ensure that you are stabilised and strong in these areas as you will need to recruit them more as the load gets bigger. Make sure you have good exercises to target these areas as well to make you stronger for your bench press,” Ben advises.

Actor, DJ, dancer. The triple threat is back and now you can add fashionisto to that impressive list of talents. This is Idris Elba in his prime and overnight the Thor actor was spotted in London attending the Stella McCartney flagship store opening party in a striking dark outfit.Proving that he’s worthy of the next 007 role, Elba rocked a cool blend of classic and contemporary against slick minimalism, a signature style that Elba has been nailing in recent times. The outfit consisted of Stella McCartney’s Italian-made navy crew neck sweater with a contrasting red double V pattern and piet grey pants by the same label which strikes a fine balance between casual and formal. Elba polished off the look with a pair of derby shoes sans socks and a fedora hat. This man can do no wrong even when he’s not trying – a bonafide James Bond trait? We’ve provided some evidence in the gallery. And we’ll also have a shimmy to that.

It’s not rocket science, men – your body is a reflection of your routine.
Having visible stomach muscles in the form of a six pack or abs is due to a solid foundation of core and abdominal muscle combined with low amounts of body fat.
Whilst genetics will get you so far, maintaining this comes down to refining your daily routine to be geared towards health.
Working out daily and moderating kilojoule consumption goes without saying as being necessary to achieve the physical attributes of a Greek God. Yet many of us who do this still cant seem to loose that last couple percentage of body fat.
Let me explain why this is the case through these three practices that prevent us from metamorphosing into something that resembles a marble statue.
RELATED: Why You Need To Eat Fat In Order To Lose Weight
Mid-Week Work Drinks
Most people are aware of the degenerative effects of excessive alcohol consumption on the human body.
Alcohol being a depressant means we are more likely to skip the gym. Its twice as dense in energy as carbohydrates and being a toxin the body must digest the alcohol first meaning we are more likely to store the food we are eating as fat.
Drinking mid week obviously adds calories to your bottom line but this isn’t the worst thing about socialising too much at work.
Burning the candle at both ends by working late, exercising hard, being mindful of diet and socialising leaves little time for rest and recuperation. Most of us are fine during the week and even until early Saturday morning, however at some stage it catches up with us and leaves us in bed all day Sunday hiding from the world.
We all do this when we are young but inevitably our resolve to maintain exercise and healthy eating decreases and we burn out as our commitments with work and partners increases with age.
If you can strike a balance and moderate when and how much you are drinking around work, you are far more likely to have that six pack not only now but well into the future.
Take Away Work Lunches
It is common for us only to see good and bad when we get take away; Sushi and rice paper rolls = good, Thai noodles = bad. However it isn’t necessarily what you’re eating that is the primary problem, it is what getting lunch out most days says about your lifestyle.
Someone that opts to buy lunch at work is someone that forgoes planning and preparation of food and health for something else.
All of us have a growing ‘To Do’ list of work and life administration duties; kids, social drinks, exercise, resting on the couch, and only a set amount of hours in the day.
All of us make decisions that have a resulting impact on our health and body that are either progressive or regressive in their impact. Simply it is whether or not we prioritise health, that is planning and preparation, which is the largest determinant to the state of any ones gut.
This needs to start with where we spend most of our time, doing work.
Morning Tea & Coffee
The classic corporate day of food goes as such; fruit or piece of toast for breakfast, coffee for morning team, take away sushi or tuna salad for lunch, coffee and treat for afternoon tea, snack upon arrival at home before a large dinner.
Coffee plays a key role in this day, stimulating our sensory system – arguably improving mental alertness whilst suppressing our appetite. It enables us to reduce our food consumption at work and through the first half of the day.
Whilst this appears as a positive, it is a massive error in understanding of how our mind and body work in relation to contemporary work life balance.
Propping our mentally exhausted minds up for short periods, caffeine allows us to suppress our appetite. We do this when we are busy, in the morning. In doing this we forgo energy, vitamins and minerals when we need them – when stressed.
Unfortunately the body has a wonderful way of surviving. When stressed and exhausted we crave energy to ensure we can survive the next bout. For most, this means that home time is a time that is full of instant gratification, be it mind numbing TV (inactivity), treats after dinner (calories when you don’t need them), and eating until heavily full (catching up on what you didn’t eat that day). When this happens day in day out it becomes tricky to manage weight.
The solution is to understand why you are reaching for the coffee and its affects on your routine choices. Using coffee as a meal replacement or stress relief due to its availability typically leads us to eat more in the second half of the day, when we are less active.
For those of us in high pressure jobs, it exhausts our adrenal systems, leading to other poor choices such as too many work drinks, take away lunches and inactivity.

For most, the standard flight experience involves cramped seats, wailing babies and questionably edible food. But for the elite, flying means fine dining, spa services, nannies to tend to the disorderly children and champagne bars to take the edge off.The airline lounge is a swanky sanctuary for the upper echelons of air travel. Once uninspiring spaces, today’s airport lounges are havens of luxury and comfort. Airlines spare no expense in offering travellers premium products, top tier food and exceptional perks (some more eccentric than others). We’ve reviewed the cream of the crop to bring you the best airline lounges of 2018. Check into one of these and you’ll almost hope your flight is delayed.
Qantas First Class Lounge, SYD
Salt and pepper squid followed by a cheeky pavlova? Don’t mind if I do. If there’s a formula for creating the perfect first class lounge, Qantas seem to have found it. The airline’s flagship lounge in Sydney is the masterful work of Creative Director Marc Newson and architecture firm Sébastien Segers Architecte DPLG. Striking design, private suites, a spa, a 30-metre vertical garden, and a restaurant menu created by Neil Perry (of Rockpool fame) are amongst the perks awaiting well-heeled guests.
British Airways Concorde Room, LHR
The dapper British vibe is unmistakable in the British Airways Concorde Room at London Heathrow. Visitors enter the lounge through the appropriately monikered “millionaire’s door,” then are greeted by crystal chandeliers, private cabanas with day beds, a state-of-the art business suite and the Elemis Spa. The fine dining restaurant, and extensive champagne and wine selection, are particularly praised by passengers.
Virgin Atlantic Clubhouse, LHR
Heathrow scores again with the Virgin Atlantic Clubhouse. Richard Branson’s trademark flair has made the London flagship lounge one of the most original and acclaimed in the world. The Clubhouse has something to offer everyone: vintage arcade games, pool tables, tea service, big-screen televisions, space-age design, complimentary spa services, expert mixologists behind the bar and even a hair salon for last-minute grooming emergencies.
Qatar Airways Lounge, DOH
Qatar Airways is also responsible for some of LHR’s prime real estate, but the airline’s true gem is found in Doha International Airport. The Al Mourjan Business Class lounge and First Class Al Safwa lounge defy all expectations. Opulent design is everywhere, from the sweeping staircase entry, to the tranquility pond, to the designer furniture and marble detailing. The world-class facilities even include a Formula 1 simulator.
Swiss First Class Lounge, Zürich
Some airlines want you to feel just as comfortable in their first-class lounge as you do at home. Swiss’ new first class lounge in Zurich has blown this idea out of the water, providing a living room that would make your tired old sofa red-faced with shame. This centrepiece of opulence reopened less than three months ago, now offering mini suites, a club with seductive leather sofas, wine humidor, two hotel rooms, a business zone and a meeting room with a view of the runway. There is also a smokers’ lounge with its own terrace and selection of fine whiskies. Furnished elegantly by Swiss designers Vitra and de Sede, the lounge exudes an ambience of refined exclusivity, complemented by the centrepiece barista bar, at which guests can sample speciality coffees and fruit brandies. Oh and the lounge offers both an à la carte restaurant and a buffet option.
Lufthansa First Class Terminal, FRA
First-class travellers passing through Frankfurt receive the ultimate A-list treatment with Lufthansa: an entire premium terminal. The experience includes private passport control and security checkpoints, plus luxury car transfer to your plane. Perhaps the most unexpected detail is the Lufthansa-branded rubber duck, which you can keep as a souvenir if you indulge in a luxurious layover bath. The unconventional memento has become a collector’s item.
Emirates First Class Lounge, Dubai
There are several First Class lounges at Emirates’ hub in Dubai; but the one in Concourse A is definitely the most impressive. The biggest First Class lounge in the world, providing seating for almost 600 passengers, its facilities include a children’s club, quiet areas, prayer rooms, showers, a business center, conference rooms, a wine cellar, and a cigar lounge. Not to mention you get direct access to gates. In terms of layout, the restaurant is star of the show, offering fine dining with a truly global selection of dishes. First Class passengers also receive complimentary 15-minute spa treatments in the adjacent spa facility, which is a nice bonus.
Singapore Airlines SilverKris Lounge, SIN
Singapore’s Changi Airport is consistently ranked one of the best in the world, so it’s no surprise that one of its lounges makes the list. The SilverKris Lounge from Singapore Airlines is spacious and welcoming, with a variety of options for a meal, rest or work. For pampering at its most over the top, passengers departing from Changi in First or Suites Class can be admitted to the ultra-exclusive Private Room.
Cathay Pacific Lounges, HKG
Cathay Pacific is the crowning glory of Hong Kong International. The airline operates a whopping five lounges in the gargantuan airport: The Bridge, The Cabin, The Wing, The Pier and The Arrivals. The main attraction is The Pier, a glass-enclosed oasis tastefully decked out in green onyx, walnut, bronze and leather. The worst part is having to decide between the fine dining, the bar, the day suites and the foot massage zone. Life’s tough: I know.
Etihad Premium Lounge, AUH
No one is surprised to find a pinnacle of luxury in the Middle East. Etihad‘s Premium Lounge in the Abu Dhabi International Airport is brimming with indulgences for discerning travellers. There’s a cigar room, the Six Senses Spa, a champagne bar and even nannies to watch the little ones. The ultimate splurge is available only to guests flying in The Residence, Etihad’s “better than first class cabin”: a special partitioned-off part of the lounge to shield you from the hoi polloi.RELATED: South Korea Is Trying To Up The Ante In Insane Airport Amenities

Let’s get real for a few metrosexual moments. You act like you’re immune to celebrity style and too busy for anything more than a quick tousle in the morning, but the reality is you care about your hairstyle. The question is, how do you choose the right hairstyle to best suit you?
There’s a lot of factors that come into play including things like face shape, hair quantity and the natural way your hair likes to sit. Well today’s your lucky day. We’ve got award-winning hairstylist Anthony Nader on board to help you look and feel your best, one strand at a time.
Research Before Your Next Appointment
You look to the style icons for your clothes, so why not for your hair?
“Many men come into my salon with references to their favourite stars’ dapper hairdos,” explains Nader. “If you can’t prepare ahead of time or just pull up a few pictures while you’re relaxing in the hairdresser’s chair it’ll make our job easier. It’s likely you’ll be on your phone anyway.”
Nader says that photographic inspiration is invaluable during the early consultation stage. It will ensure that both the hairstylist and client are on the same page and most importantly, you end up with a haircut that you don’t hate.
Communication Is Key
With the consultation underway, your stylist should have a few questions for you (if not, you could be in the wrong establishment). “Once he has a handle on what you like about the cut, he can assess how well it will work for you,” says Nader.
The topics of conversation should cover your:
- Hair type
- Hair texture
- Lifestyle habits
The last part is a commonly overlooked factor that Nader stresses. “Are you prepared to spend time each morning recreating your new star look? If the answer is no, the hairstyle is a bust even if your strands are suited to it.”
Follow Through With Expert Tips
One of the first things the hairdresser will do is take a look at your growth patterns. “Say you’ve got your eyes on one of Beckham’s iconic hairstyles, but you have a wave in your hair. The style isn’t out of reach, but you have to be willing blow dry the wave out of your hair so it matches Mr B’s,” says Nader.
“Is that a commitment you’re prepared to make?”
We get it. It’s hard to let go of an idea once your heart’s set on it, but listen to the experts if they caution against a look. There’s a reason why they know whether or not it will work for you. If your hairstylist thinks your hair’s too thin to pull off a look, don’t take it as an insult – take it as constructive feedback which will lead you on the righteous path to a better style.
Be Realistic With Maintaining Your Hairstyle
At the end of the day, what matters most is that the style you choose reflects who you are and how you want to be perceived. Trendiness is fine, but it never trumps comfort and confidence.
“You see those overseas men’s fashion parades and all the flashy stuff that goes along with them (not to mention the big budgets) and it’s easy to get caught up in something that isn’t a practical choice,” explains Nader.
“Strip everything else away until you’re just looking at the hair. Is it a style you’re actually excited to recreate, or has your imaginary bubble burst with a reality check of how hard it is to recreate?”
Remember, models and celebrities are primed to look a certain way for a certain amount of time. If you live a busy lifestyle and can’t afford an hour every morning to sort your hairstyle, then the answer is obvious.
Know Your Hair Products
On the topic of professional advice, always be sure to heed your hairdresser’s advice on hair products and the latest hair care solutions. They deal with this on an average of eight hours a day, six days a week during their whole career. Give what they recommend a try for a month and if it doesn’t work, tell them and then make your decision.

Your favourite grizzled sailor man is in trouble. He’s facing a foe several times his size, taking pummel after pummel straight to the face. So what does Popeye do? He pulls out a can of spinach, glugs the leafy greens, and suddenly he has the strength of Schwarzenegger with the moves of Bruce Lee. His opponent’s out cold and Olive Oyl is cheering from the wings. In real life, it takes more than spinach to get you jacked. Pro athletes and regular gym rats alike turn to performance-enhancing drugs to build muscle, burn fat, and boost endurance. According to a recent SBS report, the underground steroid business is booming, with various online forums and Youtube channels purporting to educate people on how to use anabolics “safely.”However, before you turn to the kind of juice that doesn’t come from a fruit, it’s important to educate yourself. Your goal may be the muscles of Lou Ferrigno, but your result could be the assets of Pamela Anderson. Here are 6 potential side effects of steroid use.
Testicular Shrinkage
It’s not often you hear the US National Library Of Medicine talking about gonads. But testicular shrinkage is an all-too-real side-effect of steroid usage. According to a study published in said journal, taking steroids increases testosterone levels, which throws the body’s natural hormone balance out of whack. In response, your body shuts down native testosterone production and the family jewels shrivel like uneaten avocados. The higher the dose and the longer the use, the longer testosterone suppression continues. Men can suffer lasting fertility and sexual dysfunction problems long after steroid use has stopped.
Erectile Dysfunction
It’s not just the little guys that pay the price for your juice habit. Former steroid users often have trouble getting it up during sex because their body has become accustomed to the artificial testosterone. Without that extra influx, the body exhibits classic “low T” symptoms. Topping that list (and not much else) is erectile dysfunction.
Breast Growth
Pumped up pecs? #Goals. Actual breasts? Not so much. The male body naturally converts a percentage of testosterone into estrogen, but when a guy takes an excessive amount of testosterone, his body creates more estrogen to match it. The spike in estrogen can cause gynocomastia – enlargement of the breasts. Not only will your girlfriend will be furious when her favourite bras start to go missing, but you may even end up having to see a doctor like Joseph T Cruise, a male breast reduction surgeon. The problem is so widespread that a recent in house study showed that fifty percent of patients who come to see him have hormone-induced gynecomastia—and the “vast majority” are bodybuilders who have taken steroids at some point in their lives.
Baldness
Dare you risk messing with your mane? Anecdotal evidence is probably all you need to be wary of hair loss, but if you ain’t adverse to a bit of data, various studies (such as this one, published at Science Daily) have established hair loss as a side-effect of steroid use. Numerous factors play a potential role in hair loss, some of which have nothing to do with drug abuse, but steroids up your chances in the baldness lottery. Some men are particularly sensitive to testosterone, and if they are already prone to male-pattern baldness, the process can be accelerated by the increased hormonal imbalance created by steroids.
Heart And Liver Damage
Studies have found that anabolic steroid use causes decreased levels of HDL (or “good” cholesterol) and increased levels of LDL (or “bad” cholesterol), increasing the risk of heart attack. High levels of liver toxicity have also been found in juicers, which means a very significant risk of serious liver damage. Although it’s tragic, there is an irony here: health-conscious men damaging their bodies in pursuit of an unattainable perfect physique.
Aggressive Behaviour
Of all the side effects of steroid use, this is the most famous. Long-term reliance on performance-enhancing drugs has been linked to aggressive and violent behavior colloquially known as “roid rage.” This study conducted by Dartmouth college highlights the effects steroids can have on your brain, including mood swings, paranoia and anxiety. Other research has linked steroid use to poor mental health later in life. Steroids have also been (less conclusively) linked to increases in a persons likelihood to commit both homicide and suicide. Either way: play it safe and stick to spinach.RELATED: These Crucial Exercises Will Ensure You Get Bigger, Faster

If you’ve just bought a house, cracked open a bottle of bubbly and invited mates around to celebrate, we’re guessing your cash flow isn’t what it used to be.Despite this, you still want to deck out your new digs in a fashion that reflects your sophistication and style. The good news is that there are plenty of affordable options that look a million bucks. This includes new designs, awesome replicas of iconic pieces, second-hand finds and DIY stunners. So, you might be on a shoestring budget but that doesn’t mean you’ll have to use shoelaces to hang your laundry. In fact, cheap furniture is easy to find if you’re looking in the right places. Below are a few of our favourite spots to nab cheap furniture that should assist any magnificent bastard going through a frugal time.
Mix & Match
The most fundamental part of interior design on a budget is to splurge on a couple of quality statement pieces if you can. For example, the couch or the bed. Mix and match those expensive items with cheaper department store finds to save crucial dollars whilst keeping the man cave polished.
Focus On Finishes
Crisp, clean finishes will bring your interiors together seamlessly. Plus, things like paint and flooring can be picked up cheap. If you lay flooring or paint/wallpaper the walls yourself, expenditure is even lower and you can save your pennies for more important stuff. Likewise, you can save by re-upholstering existing furniture or family heirlooms to match the theme of your home.
Smaller Items & Affordable Accessories
The word ‘IKEA’ strikes fear into the manliest of men who demand the best. But consider the Swedish mega-chain when shopping for small items like storage, handles, knobs and faucets. IKEA has a huge range of easy-to-install accessories that will save you a heap of cash for bigger ticket items. For example, different handles can give a mediocre chest of draws an instant facelift with a dose of masculinity where needed.
Don’t Fear Second-Hand
Some people look down on second-hand goods, but antiques are hot property now. Especially the stuff that is no longer in production. When incorporated into the home correctly, they look more expensive than newer cookie-cutter pieces.
Enlist Multi-Use Items
If you’re going to buy new, try to find multi-purpose items like couches with hidden storage or sofa beds. Glicks Furniture is the online replica king, so browse their website for inspiration and bargains on large multi-use items such as couches and dining tables which will give your home the designer feel without the designer price tag.
Auction Houses
With a little patience and some free weekends, you can get lucky at auctions like Raffan Kelaher & Thomas (auctions run weekly).
Art Hunter
Inject personality into your new home with carefully chosen artwork. Rather than dropping serious bank on an original, support local artists by shopping at arts and crafts markets. Alternatively, create something more individual, and cheaper, but become the artist. Make something yourself or utilise printable art from the Net. In the latter’s case, as long as you have a printer and a pair of scissors you’ll be able to create high-impact art for next to nothing. Add drama with smart framing. Choose oversized framing and mounting for maximum effect.
Rugs
Go big or go home. Rugs are an essential element to any home: the bigger they are, the more spacious your new home will feel. Rugs add warmth and texture to interior design, but most often come at a high cost.IKEA and similar department stores have good quality rugs that will last longer than you expect, and definitely until you can afford something more extravagant. Another option is to sew multiple smaller rugs together (mum will probably need to be employed for this task).
Appliances
Fridges, washers & dryers, dishwashers and all those electronic must-haves can take a serious chunk out of your interior design budget. Save money and shop smart with retailers who offer discounts for whitegoods with minor scuff marks. With careful vetting, Gumtree is another fabulous resource for heavy-duty appliances. You’d be surprised what some people want to get rid of.

Everyone wants to be photogenic, even us men. We yearn for the one photo that makes us look like we’re 8 times more handsome than we really are. One for the Facebook, Twitter and Instagram profile picture that will catch the eye of the girl of our dreams. Here are five simple tips and handy rules to help you look better photos more often.
Never Have A Drink In Your Hand
Some clever person once said to never have your photos taken with a drinking glass in hand. We agree, it’s not a good look and can often make you look more awkward than awesome. The drink just hangs around like an additional appendage. This rule includes beer, wine and champagne. One drink which is acceptable is a Pina Colada but only if you’re on a Windsurfer.
Know Which Buttons Should Be Done Up
Whether you’re wearing a shirt or a blazer (or both) you had best get your house in order and learn which buttons should be done up. Firstly if you’re wearing a tie, then your shirt’s top button should ALWAYS be done up. None of this loose tie shit. It’s just lazy. If you’re wearing a blazer then remember (if you do it up), then make sure it’s the top button only. Same goes for double breasted suits. If you’re wearing pants (and we hope you are) check that your fly is done up too.
Avoid Gang Signs
How this trend caught on with guys I’ll never know. The gang sign should be reserved for pesky nightclub girls, not grown men in photos. Putting your arm around your bro is fine, but make sure you’re standing up straight and not throwing peace, peeps or puppet signals.
Perfect Your Smile
There’s nothing wrong with perfecting your smile and banishing your inner spud-head. Pay attention to all the shitty photos of yourself and learn what NOT to do. Over smiling, going cross-eyed, excessive blinking and or thinking about pudding whist getting that glazed look in your eyes should be avoided. Once you get it right, its yours for life.
Don’t Always Look At The Camera
Steve McQueen, Marlon Brando and Neville Bartos all had one thing in common. They were often snapped in candid moments. Moments captured in time that will live on for many generations to come. If you’re aware there’s a camera around, then ignore it, slow your movements, have fun and with any luck they’ll snap you at your handsomest moment.
