Subtle Signs You Should Leave The Love Of Your Life
Subtle Signs You Should Leave The Love Of Your Life

When lustful displacement of linen gives way to Netflix and Doritos, what’s a bored lover to do? When your relationship is heating up, but you get offered a job on the other side of the country, what’s an ambitious lover to do? When you love your partner to death… but your commute crush just made lingering eye contact, what’s an open-minded lover to do?There are many reasons to leave your significant other. However, what might be right for one person could be totally different for another, despite the confusion and cliches promoted by pop culture. He cheated? You have to leave. She wants to move for work? You better go with her. Their family doesn’t like you? No biggie. Their friends hate you with a passion? Get out of there. All of these stereotypes could either hold true or hold less water than a dodgy colander, depending on your context. However, as the r/AskWomen section of Reddit just revealed in a thread entitled, “What are some signs that you might overlook when you should leave a relationship,” there are a few general giveaways as to your gradual slide towards oblivion an awkward Starbucks break up.

They Make You Feel Less Confident About Yourself, Not More

There’s a fine line between playful banter and downright negativity. But, as one woman puts it: “When you are mocked more than you are supported… [or] called derogatory names during an argument,” you might want to high tail it.“One day, my ex was really annoyed at me and in a very sad way of trying to shut me up, he said something that I used to hear when I got bullied in school. He knew what he was saying and still went for it. I never felt so hurt and betrayed as I felt in that moment… not even one month after that, we broke up,” another commenter added.

You Start Looking For Reasons To Leave

“When you google, how do I know I should break up.” Or, when things like “I should be meeting other people”, or “I’m too young to commit” come into your head, which, as one woman points out, can be “ways of intellectually rationalising [your] ambiguous gut feeling of something not being 100%.”

“If you can identify that something and resolve it, you stand a chance and your relationship will be stronger for it. But if you spend months with vague feelings of unease without being able to understand or fix it, they’re probably just not the right person, despite how much you want them to be.”

They Lose Their Mind Over A Few Dirty Dishes

While being lazy is sure to irritate anyone, if your partner can’t handle a few minor mishaps, they may not have your best interests at heart. Or, as one commenter puts it, “It’s the intention to hurt over petty stuff that kills a relationship. It’s about control and when they can’t control you, they try to hurt you. It’s juvenile and doesn’t do anything to build a relationship.”

They Are Unnecessarily Cruel

“Unfortunately, I think we can be cruelest to the people we love. If I don’t like someone, I just leave them be and avoid all contact, but if I think about some of the fairly awful things I’ve said to my family and my partner over the years, it’s a pretty painful thing to realise.”

You Feel Relieved When They Leave The House

“When you honestly feel relief at getting alone time when they are leaving.”

They Gaslight You

“When ANYTHING they themselves do is ‘your fault,'” one woman said, it’s time to reasses your relationship. “When they call you crazy for calling them out on some bullshit that ANYONE would call them out on,” she continues, or “when they go out of their way to talk around obvious red flags while still being SUPER red-flaggy.”

You Stop Making Up After Fights

As one savvy commenter puts it: “a lot of unstable couples fall into a routine where they just let… outbursts slide by without addressing them. They get comfortable in their wallowing, venting, etc. A healthy relationship means actively working to recognize where you may have been wrong/irrational and/or hurt the other and admitting your fault without waiting for them to bring it up.”

One Of You Is Making All Of The Sacrifices

“Relationships involve a certain amount of healthy sacrifice to remain in balance,” the aforementioned commenter continued. “Sure, you each should be your own person and you should do your best not to hold the other back from what they love or aspire towards, but a healthy relationship will continue to involve self-sacrifices that you choose to make for the betterment of the relationship or the other person. If you stop sacrificing and start counting every little loss as a personal defeat, you’re being selfish and this leads to unhealthy problems and patterns.”

They Let You Down When You Need Them Most

“When they have an opportunity to be there for you and they don’t.” The simplest, most accurate test of their commitment.

You Can’t Be Yourself Around Them

“When you find yourself hiding true parts of yourself: Not complaining when something upsets you. Pretending you’re fine when you’re upset. Not being as weird as you normally are for fear they won’t love you.”

They Cheat Early On In The Relationship

Cheating is understandable (if selfish and devastating) when you’ve been together years and your bedroom life has become more predictable than the Sahara desert’s weather forecast. Now think (as the following comment suggests), if they cheat during your honeymoon period when the serotonin is still flowing, are they really into you?

“When they cheat early-ish. The whole ‘she seduced me, she meant nothing to me, I made a stupid mistake, I wasn’t sure of our relationship boundaries.’ They never blame you, but they also don’t stop you from blaming yourself. You might spend years being given the run around, feeling like you’re slowly going mad, wondering what’s wrong with you and why you’re not enough, and turning into someone you hate and never intended to be. Then eventually, they leave you or you finally reach the last straw. Save yourself some time, save your sanity, save your friendships, ditch the cheater.”

You Never Fight

“You stop fighting bc it’s not worth it anymore.”

You’re Reluctant To Talk About Your Relationship With Your Friends & Family

“When you stop talking to your friends and family about your relationship because you are too ashamed over the… ways your SO repeatedly treat[s] you,” another commenter added, in a close-to-home insight, it might be time to set up that awkward Starbucks adieu.

Master The Perfect Smile With These Affordable Teeth Straightening Solutions

Pretend it doesn’t matter if you like, but at some point — whether it’s after a business lunch went awry or a series of failed first dates — you will be forced to consider that your ‘jaunty’ teeth may not be as charming as you thought. Harsh? Sure. But recognition is the first stage in recovery.

Besides, straightening your teeth needn’t involve years of pain and clunky headsets. Times have changed and so has the market — thanks to science and technology (yep, while NASA has been failing to put people on Mars, leaps and bounds have been made in the dental sphere) you can now get at home teeth straightening kits that work in less than 12 months, with barely visible technology, and are up to 65% cheaper than traditional braces and in-office alternatives.

To sum up, the best alternatives to braces are now:

  • No longer metal
  • Accessible from home
  • Take less than 12 months to work
  • Hardly visible

So what are your best at home teeth straightening options?

Smile Direct Club

How it works: Smile Direct make a 3D image of your smile either via an impression you take using their at home impression kit or by dropping into one of their “Smile Shops” for a quick scan of your smile. Your 3D smile is then reviewed by a registered dentist or orthodontist, who gives you a preview of your new smile and a set of clear aligners (with the optional add on of a teeth whitener) to achieve it, which you wear for 6 months until your smile is picture perfect. You then buy a retainer, to be worn only at night, checking in every 90 days with teledentistry, an app on your phone through which a registered dentist monitors your progress remotely.

How much it costs: AU$2,499 as a one off payment, or AU$99 a month (which ends up being AU$2,775 in total).

How long it takes: 6 months (then you have to keep them that way with a nighttime retainer like you would after having traditional braces).

What people say: From, “My journey to straighter teeth was easy and enjoyable,” to “I’ve been self-conscious about my teeth and smile for years but not anymore,” and “I couldn’t be happier,” the general sentiment is overwhelmingly positive.

“I had braces when I was younger and all the different types of retainers I had eventually broke. I wore them every night. So when I had nothing to wear my teeth started crowding again. I hadn’t worn retainers for probably about 10 years. My teeth weren’t too noticeably crowding to anyone but myself. I only had to wear Smile Direct aligners for 5 months to get back my straight teeth. And I saved all of them in case I ever need to go through this process again.”

Where it’s available: Australia, USA, Canada, United Kingdom.

Candid

How it works: Much like Smile Direct, Candid either sends you an at home teeth straightening starter kit which contains the equipment for you to take an impression of your own teeth, or you go in to get a free scan at a Candid Studio. Candid orthodontists then design your treatment, sending you an interactive 3D model of your teeth straightening over time. Your custom aligners are then delivered to your door (in a kit that also includes retainers, complimentary whitening and access to Candid’s white-glove care team).

How much it costs: US$1,900 as a one-off payment, or US$88 a month.

How long it takes: About 6 months before you move to the retainer.

What people say: Treating a case of protrusion, one client said, “No one can tell that I’m wearing my aligners. I don’t even remember I’m wearing them myself sometimes.”

Not bad.

Another, who used Candid to treat a case of discolouration and crowding said, “I never used to smile before Candid. Now I am so much more confident and never think twice about showing my new and improved teeth.”

Where it’s available: USA.

Smile Love

How it works: You receive your impression kit in the mail, spend 20-30 minutes making the moulds, and send it back to Smile Love with the included return shipping label. Smile Love’s dental team then create a preview of what your teeth will look like, along with an estimate of how long it will take to achieve (if you’re not happy with this preview, you’ll be refunded in full). You then get sent your at home teeth straightening kit which includes aligners, case, and additional materials all in a single package.

How much it costs: US$1,895 if you pay all at once, or a US$79 a month plan (spreading the cost over 12-24 months), or a US$1,974 “first kit” plan where you pay US$79 for your impression kit and then US$1,895 to cover the rest.

How long it takes: About 6 months before you move to the retainer (although this will vary case by case). As for when you will start to see real progress, this will depend too — but could happen after as little as a few months.

What people say: “No regrets. Excellent customer service and friendly people, simple process (extremely simple), and the clear aligners are nice, high quality. Oh… and the best price out of everybody that I found, by far,” one no-longer-gap-toothed man recounts.

“I am 4 months into treatment and there is a huge improvement in my smile! I can’t wait to see the end results!”

“I loved the service, the help (I wasn’t good at making teeth prints and received a second set for free) THANK YOU. I’m loving how my teeth look every day more,” said a woman with a similarly resurrected smile.

As to why she picked Smile Love?

“Because it was cheaper and I didn’t have to go be in line anywhere for it.”

Where it’s available: USA.

At Home Teeth Straightening FAQs

How long do adults wear regular braces to straighten teeth?

Depending on the situation, you may wear braces from 18 months to three years. Plus, after treatment, you have to wear a retainer to keep your teeth from moving back.

What is the difference between retainers and braces?

Braces are glued to your teeth, while retainers are removable. Both work in the same way by slowly pressuring teeth so that they become properly aligned and spaced over time.

Is it worth getting teeth straightened?

Absolutely. Aside from the aesthetic benefit, straightened teeth allow for improved cleaning, reducing the likelihood of tooth decay and gum disease.

Dwayne Johnson’s Slick 60s Outfit Wasn’t Enough To Contain His Muscles
Dwayne Johnson’s Slick 60s Outfit Wasn’t Enough To Contain His Muscles

Dwayne Johnson is undoubtedly the reigning action man of our generation but there’s one thing he continues to trump over all his predecessors — good taste in style.

At his latest New York City appearance this week the 47-year-old actor rocked one of the coolest 60s inspired summer outfits we’ve seen in a while.

Making blue his primary colour of choice, Johnson paired a striped button up cotton shirt with blue trousers, blue leather belt and a pair of classic black wayfarer sunglasses. Simple and effective enough, even if Johnson’s top-heavy frame made the whole thing look sprayed on.

Johnson is subjected to the same conundrum as other bodybuilders in that their proportions vary widely across their frame. The shoulders are often wide, the biceps often stretch sleeves to the limits and a glance at the thighs will easily indicate that skipping leg day is not an option. The secret then is good tailoring.

As one of the wealthiest men in Hollywood there’s no doubt that Johnson can afford a tailor or at least a size in clothing that fits him. This outfit does it just right even if it is a bit tight. The striped shirt is 60s inspired and features contrasting stripes, buttons and panelling straight out of that era.

The trousers meanwhile are brighter in a solid navy paired to a striking blue belt. The footwear is a standard summer staple in the form of brown loafers. Remember, you don’t need to wear socks with loafers during summer. The whole look is polished off with the aforementioned watch and sunglasses.

The muscles? We can’t help you with that but if you do have them, this is the best way to contain them as off-the-rack items will rarely be your friend. Godspeed, you stylish lifters.

‘Weird & Wonderful’ ATO Claims Provide Hilarious Insight Into The Australian Psyche
‘Weird & Wonderful’ ATO Claims Provide Hilarious Insight Into The Australian Psyche

Despite our reliance on AirPods and Uber, Australia’s identity is still rooted in outdoor adventure. However, if this year’s outlandish ATO claims are anything to go by, we’re now a nation of lavish wedding cakes, stupidly expensive pre-schools and high-tech toys more than we are of Akubras and jolly swagmen.

As the ABC reported on Tuesday, “Almost 700,000 taxpayers claimed about $2 billion of ‘other’ expenses in the 2017 financial year, including non-allowable items such as a wedding, dental costs, child care, gambling losses, beer, and a Lego set, according to the Australian Taxation Office.”

“Assistant commissioner Karen Foat said a recent review of claims had found, and disallowed, the bulk of the ‘very unusual expenses’ claimed.”

“We do see a whole host of weird and wonderful claims,” Ms Foat told the ABC, adding, “it is concerning to us that 88 per cent of them [the 700,000 claims worth $2 billion for ‘other’ expenses] needed to be adjusted.”

She then said the ATO had seen an increase in the total value of claims when compared to ‘other’ deductions.

“The total value of claims has increased by 13 per cent over three financial years: from $1.74 billion in 2015, to $1.87 billion in 2016, to $1.97 billion in 2017.”

This all adds up. Which means government spending on essential community services may have reduced in recent years not only because of budget cuts but also because of your indulgent claiming of items like “essential” work clothes (for which there have been tax return requests to the tune of $1.5 billion).

Foat also told the ABC the ATO believes illegitimate claims made by individuals have resulted in a $8.7 billion tax gap. To counter this, she revealed, the ATO have imposed a system of penalties to anyone found rorting the system, with guilty parties to be charged “anywhere between 25 per cent to 75 per cent of the shortfall amount” for making a false claim.

As for the most bizarre claims they have seen this year, $4,000 for a wedding comes up trumps (“we have also seen a previous example where a taxpayer tried to claim wedding expenses of approximately $58,000, claiming this was in relation to a work-related overseas conference,” Foat told the ABC) setting the tone for the rest.

The rest included dental expenses (because, and we quote, having a nice smile is “essential to finding a job”), Lego sets bought as gifts, $20,000 being claimed for having twins (“the cost of raising a newborn is expensive”) and — our personal favourite — a man who claimed giving his old car to his mum as a “charitable deduction.”

Needless to say, they were all rejected, along with gambling losses, the costs of a daughter’s first birthday, a phone bill for calling parents, childcare costs, child support payments, private school fees, health insurance and medical expenses, “all of which are not allowable,” (ABC).

The takeaway? Spend your dough on adult braces and destination weddings if you like, but don’t expect the ATO to be enamoured by your easy-going smile.

Grey Jeans Will Unlock Your Sharpest Urban Style; Here’s How To Wear Them
Grey Jeans Will Unlock Your Sharpest Urban Style; Here’s How To Wear Them

Once the reserve of lanky hipsters and early 00s pop-rock bands, grey jeans are now enjoying a resurgence of sorts. Unlike their stove pipe predecessors though, the modern-day grey jean is an altogether more elegant iteration on denim.

Easily paired with either a plain tee or dressed up with a blazer and shirt, these are jeans that are made for any occasion. However, as is always the case with a wardrobe staple, there is a degree of discernment required in pulling grey jeans off. Here, we explain exactly how to wear grey jeans so that you’ll look your best on any given day.

How To Wear Grey Jeans With A T-Shirt

Jeans with a t-shirt is the ultimate in laid back elegance. Perfect for a lazy Sunday brunch, a trip to the pub or even a casual dinner; it’s an ensemble that will hold you in good stead. So why stick to your standard blue wash denim? Why not experiment with grey?

Grey jeans are perfect for when you’re looking for a slightly more elevated take on this classic outfit. Pair a straight leg pair of faded 501s with a burnt out cotton tee and some crisp Common Projects sneakers for a look that is the definition of understated cool.

Don’t be afraid to experiment with patterned or different coloured t-shirts either. A Breton stripe long sleeve tee is a great way to change things up whilst still maintaining a classic aesthetic. Alternatively, look at playing with washed out neutral shades and even complimentary greys for a strong monochrome look.

How To Wear Grey Jeans With A Blazer

If you’re needing to dress up a bit more, grey jeans are a great base for a shirt and blazer combination. Opt for a slim fit and a more charcoal based wash for the jeans, looking at pairing them with a black or navy linen-silk blend blazer and a crisp white shirt.

If the situation calls, add in a fun pocket square or even a lapel pin to give your monochrome look a pop of colour. Accents like blue or red give a sense of personality to your look and will ensure you stand out from the crowd.

You are in jeans after all so look for casual tailoring. Soft shoulders, patch pockets and no lining will ensure that your blazer feels in keeping with the more casual pants option. If the situation allows, even think about pairing it all back with a pair of sneakers for a seriously urban take on the classic blazer.

What Shoes To Wear With Grey Jeans

The sky is the limit when it comes to the shoes you pair with grey jeans.

Obviously, the go-to option is a pair of sneakers. Look at the likes of Common Projects, Oliver Cabell or Vans for cool comfort, focusing on some of their alternative colourways like blush or even black. Wear these with matching coloured socks or exposed ankles, rolling back the cuffs of your jeans for a cool cuffed jeans look.

In the cooler months, look at Chelsea boots as a slightly warmer option. Black leather or suede versions have the ability to elevate most jeans and are great if you’re headed to a slightly more formal occasion. Make sure that the hem of the jeans sits over the top of the boots with the tags tucked in.

How To Layer With Grey Jeans

When the mercury drops, a tee-shirt or shirt alone won’t cut it. Instead of shivering it out though, there are a number of layers you can add to keep warm but still maintain your cool.

First amongst them is the humble denim jacket. Double denim? You bet. The beauty of grey jeans is that you can acceptably pair them with a blue wash jacket without even a second glance. Layer the jacket over a black, unmarked hoodie with a pair of black suede Chelsea boots for an effortlessly urban outfit.

If double denim isn’t your thing, look at changing your look up with a bomber jacket. Worn over a tee-shirt or a white button-down, this jacket can be worn to slightly more formal venues. Just ensure that it’s a slim-line iteration of the style – not a bulky 80s fly jacket. For ultimate cool, opt for a satin bomber with embroidered detailing on the back, sneakers and a plain fitted tee.

What To Look For When Buying Grey Jeans

When buying grey jeans you’ve got two things to focus on; fit and wash. The fit should be based around how you want to wear them. Are they for lazy weekends? Go for a looser straight leg cut or even a bootcut. If they’re for something a little dressier, opt for slim cut styles that hug your legs and cut a more streamlined silhouette. Slim cuts are also easier to match with a jacket or button-down shirt.

In terms of colour, be mindful that it will usually fade after the first wash. This is worth keeping in mind if you’re going for a super light wash. There’s a fine line between a light-grey and a grubby looking white — take heed.

Lewis Hamilton Sparks Masculinity Debate With Controversial Fitness Advice
Lewis Hamilton Sparks Masculinity Debate With Controversial Fitness Advice

When you have the world salivating for your health and fitness insights, it’s hard to say something that doesn’t generate controversy. However, when you teeter over a fault line like veganism — a political, personal and generational flashpoint — the tightrope tightens.Case in point: Lewis Hamilton’s recent Instagram post: a video promoting a “revolutionary new documentary” on plant-based athletes, which has sparked fierce debate among his 12.2 million followers.

“Performance is everything,” Hamilton captioned the trailer; “if we want to feel good, have more energy and perform to our best, we need to have the right fuel in our bodies.”

“I’m proud to be Exec Producer on @gamechangersmovie, alongside the legends @jamescameronofficial, @schwarzenegger, @jackiechan, @djokernole and @cp3.”

“It’s a revolutionary new documentary and I can’t wait for you guys to see it this September. Tickets available now,” Hamilton wrapped. So far so promotional. However, as the documentary challenges the stereotype that you need to eat meat to get massive, a clashing of plant-based zealots and carnivorous cynics soon commenced. From positive comments like “just do it!” and “get healthier; become a game changer” to more tentative reactions like “I’m on seafood only right now, hopefully I can take the next step to plant base only by year end” and firmly negative responses like “well done because of all your boring preaching on this I’m having some lovely venison steaks tonight” there was a wide range of opinion. There were also comments that turned into discussion threads of their own like, “I’m a big guy, 6’1 235lbs, idk how my body would feel if I stop eating meat.”RELATED: Here’s The Secret To Eating Your Way To Muscle Gain Or Weight Loss, According To A Nutrition ExpertSome responded succinctly (“healthier!”) to this question, while others provided helpful personal insights: “First you would loose [sic] lots of weight without any effort. Then you would feel proud of yourself for doing it and your soul would feel lighter. Happier. That is what happened to me.”

“Don’t need it. More protein from plant foods. You’ll probably get bigger and feel infinitely healthier.”

And the support kept rolling in, from “almost all the guys in this video are BIG guys — that should get you started,” to “[I’m] 6’7 and 275,5 lbs. Nearly 3 years vegan now and never felt better and stronger brother.”

“All the strongest animals in the world are plant based. Join them.”

However, the positivity did not last, with comments like the following (“an incredible film that will show how incredible the vegan lifestyle is”) from Dom Z Thompson, a renowned Vegan bodybuilder prompting others to question the documentary’s objectivity.

“This video is marketing too.”

Others sympathised with the vegan cause, but criticised their militancy: “The trouble is Lewis, as much as I believe in… looking after not only yourself but the environment as well, the biggest difficulty for me, not only as a chef but as a lover of food as well, is that meat and seafood just taste so good, they are what dishes, meals, cultures are based around. I aplaude you for pushing this, it is what the world needs, but there is always room for some animal protein!”“It is not unnecessarily killing an animal, it is farming, we have been doing it for thousands of years as a species,” another burger-lover added. To which one vegan responded with, “there is no room for unnecessarily killing animals. A life is more valuable than a human’s taste buds.”And just as it seemed no nuance would be added to the debate, one savvy commenter dropped this gold nugget.

“Looking after the environment is important, I understand how much energy goes into making 1kg of beef. I’m not saying that veganism should be shut down, I understand the concept and the health benefits, however we are omnivores and fish and meat should be part of our diet. I do agree that as a species, we eat too much and we are draining the world as a result and that is something that needs to be tackled. But we shouldn’t stop eating it all together. Obviously each person has their own viewpoint and I respect each one. All the best to you, I wish you well.”

“I don’t buy animals that have been mistreated,” another added, “I am very much in support of high levels of farming and animal welfare.”But, as one vegan suggested, even happily-raised animals have an extra environmental cost: “here in Brazil, 91% of the Amazonia is being devastated to grow grains for slaughter animals, do you agree with that? In addition, animal agriculture produces more greenhouse gases than all modes of transport combined! (UN 2017). I understand that there is a cultural factor, but 130 years ago slavery was common, today we all know that there is no room for this practice.”To which some of Lewis Hamilton’s followers suggested the discussion was getting a little off topic: “the post isn’t even about eating meat… it’s about using a plant-based diet to become strong… I just really don’t get it or really why ur trying so hard to kindly ‘shame’ someone.”RELATED: The Vegan Diet: A Nutritionist Explains Exactly How It Will Impact Your HealthSo, can you really get strong by going vegan?
