‘World’s Smallest Hummer’ For Sale In Sydney Is The Perfect Truck For Summer

There are two types of men in this world: those who think Hummers are cool, and liars. The hefty American 4×4, a barely modified civilian version of the M998 HMMWV military vehicle (better known as the ‘Humvee’) is like no other car on the road. Huge, brutish, incredibly fuel-thirsty yet tough as nails and capable of conquering terrain like no other off-roader on the market, the original Hummer H1 was and still is an awesome car.The later Hummer H2 and H3s, which are basically just fancied-up SUVs, aren’t cool. They’re not real Hummers, really. But that’s another story. The problem with Hummers, though, is that they’re totally impractical for day-to-day or even occasional driving. People buy them for their looks, but those looks come at a cost. Thankfully, one enterprising New South Welshman has come up with a solution. If you’re going to drive a ‘fake’ Hummer, you may as well go all the way… Meet the ‘world’s smallest Hummer’: a way to enjoy all the outrageous Californian, Arnold Schwarzenegger-esque fun of a Hummer whilst still being able to park in normal car spots and without spending a Hollywood-sized figure on fuel.

Neat and tidy. The steering wheel is similar to those found in 70s Porsches. Image: Carsales
As you might have guessed, this isn’t really a Hummer. It’s actually a 1969 Volkswagen Super Beetle with a one-of-a-kind custom bodyshell to fit over the classic car’s frame. As the Sydney-based seller relates, “this is not your ordinary beach buggy”:

“Pretty much everything is custom to suit, including the wheels, engine cover and roll cage. The engine is a newly built 1600cc VW engine. Obviously, the body is fibreglass and the frame was fully rust proofed and painted. The paint is brand new in Holden ‘Sting Red’ and front seats are Recaro.”

“[It] has a new, hidden sound system Including a boxed 6×9 and Sony head unit and amp. Most importantly, the car is fully engineered and has full NSW rego and can be registered anywhere in Australia.”RELATED: Most Unlikely SUV Ever Spotted Cruising Streets Of North Korea“Goes without saying, this car literally stops traffic everywhere it goes, would be a great weekender [or] even a business promo vehicle.”

The Hummer buggy, and a real Hummer H1 for comparison. Images: Carsales / Hot Rod Hotline
The quality of the customisation is truly impressive, and if you didn’t know any better, you could easily fool people into thinking it was a real Hummer. They’ve even added fake mounting points on the bonnet that resemble the Hummer’s cargo tie-downs.And, because it’s just a Beetle underneath, it will sip fuel, drive nicely, and parts/maintenance will be a doddle. Far easier than trying to work on a real Hummer with its portal gear lifts, inboard brakes and mammoth weight. You’re unlikely to daily drive a Hummer anyway – and if you’re looking for a cute summer runabout, this is a far more practical, and dare we say, far more fun alternative. Arnie would approve. You can find this Hummer buggy on Carsales. They’re asking $33,888, which is far less than even the cheapest real H1. We reckon it’s a killer deal.

New Indonesia Travel Rule Precludes 92% Of Australians From Entering Bali
New Indonesia Travel Rule Precludes 92% Of Australians From Entering Bali

The ‘Bondi, Byron, Bali’ triangle has the same attraction to ‘spiritual urbanites’ as the Bermuda triangle has to light aircraft. This community was dealt a Chakra-stinging blow earlier this week, however, when news broke that Indonesia would be adopting a ‘no vax, no fly’ policy.Coconuts Bali reports this is sending foreign nationals in Bali “into a frenzy.”“From anti-vaxxers condemning the move, to travellers who prefer to get the COVID jab in their home countries, to those frustrated with not being able to get vaccinated even if they wanted to,” the move has allegedly ruffled a lot of feathers, Coconuts Bali claims.

Here in Australia, our Beige linen wearing brethren now face a dilemma (beyond that of doing the right thing by the rest of the country) – abandon the anti-vax rhetoric (which, unfortunately, quite a few in these communities seem to subscribe to) or have their wings clipped. With international travel tipped to resume in 2022, those looking to resume their annual pilgrimage to Mrs Sippy Seminyak will have to either get vaccinated or potentially be denied entry to Indonesia. At the time of writing, only 8.2% of Australians have been fully vaccinated, according to The Guardian. This rules out 91.8% of Australians from entering Indonesia (and by extension, Bali) right now.Australians can’t leave Australia right now anyway due to our own government’s travel ban. The big question Indonesia’s new policy raises is how many of us will be fully vaccinated next year (or whenever international travel resumes) and whether this ‘no vax no fly’ policy for foreign nationals is going to remain in place permanently.

“The COVID-19 Task Force issued the new requirements yesterday,” Coconuts Bali reported on Monday, “which mandates that foreign nationals entering Indonesia must test negative for the coronavirus and to show a card or certificate that indicates they have received their full dose of a COVID-19 vaccine.”RELATED: Overseas Travel ‘#1 Reason’ To Get Vaccinated For 80% Of Australians, Study Finds“Foreigners who are already in Indonesia and are wishing to travel within the country are subject to domestic travel rules for Indonesian nationals, with one notable rule being that they are allowed to travel after having received at least one dose of the COVID-19 jab as well as a negative test result,” Coconuts Bali added.

“The vaccine certificate requirement does not apply to foreign nationals with diplomatic visas, visiting on an official state capacity, or entering Indonesia under the Travel Corridor Arrangement scheme. Indonesians traveling from abroad can get their vaccines once they arrive in the country.”

News.com.au reports that, “While some anti-vaxxers have slammed the rule, other travellers currently living in Indonesia say they would prefer to get the covid jab in their own home countries.”Other travellers living in Indonesia, news.com.au also reports, “Say that like in Australia – getting access to the jab is proving near impossible.”According to Coconuts Bali, the new rule has impacted people’s travel decisions.

“One Facebook user said they recently arrived in Jakarta from the Netherlands and intended to travel to Bali, but are now unable to do so because they ‘do not want to be vaccinated,'” Coconuts Bali reported.“Another user, who says he’s seeking to leave Indonesia as soon as possible, wrote last night: ‘I’m not interested in taking the vaccines that are available here in Indonesia for personal reasons and just trying to get my family back home.'”RELATED: Outrage Over New Zealand Travel Rule Shows Some Australians Still Living In COVID ‘La La Land’Other social media posts DMARGE has seen on Twitter show people speculating that Australia too, might introduce a no vax, no-fly policy when we eventually allow international travel again. This is pure speculation at this point, however.

Spike Lee’s Masterclass On How To Dress When You’re 60 & Give Zero F*cks

Spike Lee is one of the most underrated style icons of the last half-century.The acclaimed film director has always had an eclectic and off-beat personal aesthetic: from his chunky glasses to love of colour and wild baseball caps, Lee’s always been one of a kind. Indeed, he arguably kickstarted modern sneaker culture with his 90s ads for Nike, featuring his iconic tagline, “it’s gotta be da shoes.”His latest look is one of his best yet, and one that proves that entering your seventh decade doesn’t mean you have to tone down your dress sense. Hell, it’s probably a good excuse to go wild.In France for the 74th Cannes Film Festival, Lee shared his red carpet outfit to Instagram: a vibrant pink Louis Vuitton double-breasted suit designed by Virgil Abloh, complemented with pink LV sunglasses and a dapper black fedora. The most exciting part of his fit (at least for sneakerheads) is actually what’s on his feet: a very special pair of Air Jordan 1s. Created specifically for Lee for this event, these rare kicks feature a red, white and blue colour scheme (a reference to the French flag) and feature Lee’s likeness on the tongues.RELATED: Expert Reveals Which Sneaker Investments Are Outperforming Blue Chip Stocks In 2021

Both Lee and Abloh are trailblazing African-American creatives in their respective fields and both have made a big splash in France: Lee’s actually the Cannes jury president this year – the first black man ever – and Abloh is the first black man to ever head up one of Europe’s luxury houses. We just hope that when we turn 64, like Lee has, that we’ll be confident and stylish enough to pull off a suit like this…

Experts Destroy ‘Romantic’ Myth You Probably Believe About Wine
Experts Destroy ‘Romantic’ Myth You Probably Believe About Wine

History is full of wine romantics. From Cleopatra to Sinatra, vino has a storied history, made more alluring over the centuries by the damaged archangels that have sipped it.But neither England’s new romantics (see: Coleridge) nor Hollywood’s latest batch of celebrities, nor Tyrion from Game of Thrones, nor even Lebron and his King-like drinking habits can hold a candle to the mass delusion everyday people around the world (read: us) still believe about grape juice. That delusion? Wine is made to be aged. That’s right: you’ve probably been wasting space in your cellar and NakedWines Australia is here to explain why.Taking to Twitter, the online wine seller dropped the following bomb earlier this year.

“Did you know 99% of wine should be consumed the day you buy it or shortly after?”

“The reason we cellar wines is because many wines get more interesting with age, developing new flavours and textures.”

A convenient thing for a vino purveyor to point out? Absolutely. Wrong? The ratio of high-quality to low-quality wine in your local bottle shop can probably answer that for you. What is up for debate, however, is the word “shortly.”As Moravin (a website run by a former chef and current wine seller) explains, “There is a common misconception, that all wine will continue to improve with age. But, in fact, most experts agree that only 5-10% of all wine will improve with more than 1 year of aging and only 1% of all wine improves with more than 5 years of aging.”

“This means that 99% of all wine we buy is meant to be drunk right now. This doesn’t mean that the wine will expire. But, you shouldn’t purposefully age it, because you won’t be gaining any benefit from waiting.”

“When we say a wine is meant to be drunk now, we mean it is intended to be consumed within 1 to 5 years or so of buying it,” (Moravin).“After that time, the wine can actually start to deteriorate and lose many of the qualities that made it so delicious.”RELATED: Australian Wine Snob Learns Important Lesson After Committing ‘Ultimate Barossa Valley Sin’Well, there goes the romantic myth we all (I’m not alone, am I?) believe as we pull our $25 bottles of wine out from the pantry 6 months after buying them, then patting ourselves on the back for being low-key connoisseurs…Spoiler alert – it will probably taste exactly the same as when you bought it! Or, if it’s been exposed to heat, worse.RELATED: The Difference Between An $800 & An $80 Bottle Of Red WineDon’t lose hope though. This is just yet another excuse to get the corkscrew out (or buy more expensive wine). A win for everyone but your wallet. And in case you hadn’t heard, in 2021, money is free...If you are interested in knowing exactly which wines are best for aging, Vintec explains it well:“As a general rule, light wines like Pinot noir, Grenache and Mourvedre have a lifespan shorter (closer to the ten year mark) than the heavier shiraz, cabernet and merlot (can be kept for ten to twenty years, or even fifty or more for the best ones).”Moravin has a few more useful insights along the same lines.“Unlike [young wines], the red wine of aging, after the fermentation process, is left to rest in a wooden barrel for a year or so. After spends at least a year stored in the barrel, it is bottled and left to age a couple of years, approximately. Typically, it is a wine that will go on sale from the third year of life,” (Moravin).“In Spain for example, wines labeled with ‘Reserva’ must be aged for 3 years with a minimum of 6 months of that time in oak barrels.”Salud!

What Really Happens When You Don’t Pay Your Hotel Quarantine Bill
What Really Happens When You Don’t Pay Your Hotel Quarantine Bill

Australia’s borders were slammed shut tighter than a Bondi latte sipper’s activewear (or a gym bro’s shorts) a long time ago. Along with that came the proviso that you can leave only if granted an exemption.

Alongside that came a system of hotel quarantine for returning travellers. Despite leaking on various occasions, this – by and large – has helped Australia achieve a remarkably low rate of Covid-19 community transmission since the pandemic began.

Next to the pricy return flights to Australia, the cost of the hotel quarantine is another deterrent to Australians thinking of requesting an exemption to leave the country. Quarantine costs about $3,000.

It’s also something of a lucky dip, with travellers not knowing whether they will be placed in the likes of a Novotel or The Sheraton (despite everyone paying the same).

Being stuck in a room for two weeks without being able to open a window, though not the worst thing one might be subjected to, admittedly, sucks.

Some travellers might be tempted then, to simply not pay their hotel quarantine bill. What’s the worst that could happen, right?

Today we’re here to answer that question.

Basically, it doesn’t get forgotten about, and your state government will call in debt collectors to chase up your payment. Your hotel quarantine bill is not optional, and there are payment plans you can enter into and discuss (as well as extensions) with the government if you are facing financial hardship, NSW Finance Minister Damien Tudehope has said.

As Mr Tudehope has previously explained, the bill is not just for the room and food, but also security, testing, cleaning, police and health personnel.

If necessary, the internal debt collectors at Revenue NSW are equipped with the power to take money from bank accounts or wages or seize property, if warnings are flouted.

The Sydney Morning Herald reported in February that the NSW government “has called in debt collectors to chase $16.4 million owed by more than 7000 returning Australians for their stay in mandatory hotel quarantine in Sydney.”

“Revenue NSW figures as of Friday, February 19 show debt recovery orders have been issued for 5264 invoices covering 7214 travellers. These bills are more than two months overdue.”

The Sydney Morning Herald also reported that a freedom of information request made by The Sun-Herald “shows almost one in four of the 54,000 people billed for mandatory hotel quarantine in Sydney have failed to pay their bill on time.”

NSW is not alone in this. Queensland premiere Annastacia Palaszczuk recently called in the debt collectors too, Daily Mail reports.

The latest figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics show that in May 2021 there were an estimated 115,600 estimated arrivals in Australia – an increase of 60,800 compared with the previous month.

Acording to the ABS, “44,600 Australian citizens arrivals (39%), 9,900 permanent visa holders (9%), 52,300 New Zealand citizens (45%) and 10,100 temporary visa holders (9%),” arrived in May.

Assuming the Sun Herald’s one-in-four statistic has remained the same, that means 28,900 of those that arrived in May have not paid their bill on time. This would translate to the government being owed $86,700,000, for the month of May alone.

For those seeking more information about arriving in NSW, the NSW Government Revenue page is the place to visit.

Effective dates for the commencement of quarantine fees for the following travellers who enter into quarantine accommodation are as follows:

  • All International Travellers from 12:01am 18 July 2020 (AEST). Special arrangements apply to travellers from New Zealand after 16 October 2020.
  • International Travellers from New Zealand COVID-19 Hotspots directed into quarantine accommodation
  • Domestic travellers from Victoria between 12:01am Friday 7 August 2020 and 12:01am on 23 November 2020 (AEDT)
  • Returning NSW residents from Victoria betweem 12:01am 11 September 2020 and 12:01am on 23 November 2020 (AEDT)

There are some circumstances in which you can request a fee waiver. For information on whether this applies to you, click here.

Tom Brady Goes To War With Aaron Rodgers Wearing A Watch Made For Conflict

Golf is more than just a sport. It’s a form of mindfulness; a discipline that’s more about restraint than it is about power. It’s where business deals and political negotiations happen. It’s a way to catch up with mates… Or go to war with them.It seems as if it’s the latter that Tom Brady prepared for during his recent golfing face-off against friend and fellow NFL superstar Aaron Rodgers yesterday. The pair were at The Reserve at Moonlight Basin in Big Sky, Montana, competing in 2021’s edition of Capital One’s The Match, a charity 18-hole game. Rodgers teamed up with world #6 Bryson DeChambeau and Brady teamed up with world #36 Phil Mickleson for the event, but naturally, all eyes were on the two quarterbacks.Of course, our eyes turned to what was on Brady’s wrist: an IWC Schaffhausen Big Pilot’s Watch Top Gun Edition “Mojave Desert” (ref. IW506003). Brady might have looked outwardly at ease on the green and happy to trade light-hearted trash talk, but this choice of timepiece reveals how he was ready for war.A striking variant of IWC’s iconic tool watch, the Mojave Desert features a ceramic case; technical textile and rubber strap; desert brown colour scheme and a ‘TOPGUN’ logo engraved on the caseback.

The ‘Top Gun’ in the watches’ name doesn’t refer to the Tom Cruise movie: it instead pays homage to the US Navy’s Fighter Weapons School, also called TOPGUN. It’s this elite flight school that inspired the iconic 80s flick.IWC has had a long relationship with TOPGUN. Indeed, they offer an exclusive model – the Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Edition “Strike Fighter Tactics Instructor” – which is only available to TOPGUN graduates, much like how Bremont offers their MBI exclusively to customers who’ve ejected from a Martin-Baker ejection seat.RELATED: Best Military Watches That Will Enhance Your Rugged Good LooksAs for Rodgers, he sported a rather futuristic Zenith Defy Classic Carbon (ref. 10.9000.670/80.R795) on his wrist. As the name implies, the Defy Classic Carbon features a case made out of incredibly light yet durable carbon fibre, which protects the ultra-thin and high-frequency Zenith Elite movement within.Sadly for Brady, it was Rodgers and his Zenith that took home the gold on the green. After being tied at hole #9, Rodgers and DeChambeau edged ahead of Brady and Mickleson and secured victory by hole #16, SportingNews reports.Brady still has more Super Bowl rings, though…

Scientists Develop Impressive New Technology To Make Aircraft Engines 80% Quieter
Scientists Develop Impressive New Technology To Make Aircraft Engines 80% Quieter

Did you ever think you’d live to see the day planes would make as much noise as hairdryers?

You may be in luck.

Scientists at the University of Bath have just created the lightest sound insulation ever manufactured.

The outrageously light new material can reduce aircraft engine noise and improve passenger comfort.

The material – graphene oxide-polyvinyl alcohol aerogel – weighs just 2.1kg per cubic metre. It’s the lightest sound insulation ever made.

It could be used as insulation within aircraft engines to reduce noise by up to 16 decibels, Science Daily reports.

This would reduce the 105-decibel roar of a jet engine taking off to a sound closer to that of a hair-dryer, researchers claim.

“The aerogel’s meringue-like structure makes it extremely light, meaning it could act as an insulator within aircraft engine nacelles, with almost no increase in overall weight,” the scientists say.

“The material is currently being further optimised by the research team to offer improved heat dissipation, offering benefits to fuel efficiency and safety.”

Researchers from Bath’s Materials and Structures Centre (MAST) published the study (and their method for creating the material) in the journal Nature Scientific Reports.

Lead researcher Professor Michele Meo said there could be applications beyond just commercial flight: “This is clearly a very exciting material that could be applied in a number of ways – initially in aerospace but potentially in many other fields such as automotive and marine transport, as well as in building and construction.”

“We managed to produce such an extremely low density by using a liquid combination of graphene oxide and a polymer, which are formed with whipped air bubbles and freeze-casted.”

“On a very basic level, the technique can be compared with whipping egg whites to create meringues – it’s solid but contains a lot of air, so there is no weight or efficiency penalty to achieve big improvements in comfort and noise.”

The team’s initial focus, however, remains in testing the material as a sound insulator in aeroplane engines. They think it could also be used to create panels in helicopters, or car engines, and believe that the aerogel could be in use within 18 months.

Just in time for COVID-19 to buzz off and for global travel to get back to normal? Here’s hoping.

Kanye West Commits Style Terrorism At Paris Fashion Week

Talented yet unpredictable, Kanye West is one of the most enigmatic figures of our time. The 44-year-old rapper, fashion designer and would-be politician certainly marches to his own beat. A bass-heavy 808 beat, specifically. His latest move? Turning up to Balenciaga’s haute couture show during Paris Fashion Week wearing a full face mask that makes him look like a bank robber… Or a waterboarding victim.According to E Online, West happily posed for pictures with the accessory on and even kept it on whilst chatting with VIP guests like Anna Wintour, James Harden and Lewis Hamilton. It’s a bizarre look, but one he’s rocked before. During his 2014 tour for his sixth studio album, Yeezus, Kanye performed on stages across the globe wearing a series of bejewelled full face masks designed by Maison Margiela.Well, it’s one way to wear a mask during COVID…

He contrasted the confronting headgear with a rather subdued outfit, consisting of a jacket from his collaborative capsule with Gap (in an as-of-yet unseen black colourway) and a pair of Yeezy Foam RNNRs from his long-running collaboration with Adidas. Controversially, he paired the clogs with some Nike socks – surprising, considering his long-running animus towards the brand.RELATED: Justin Bieber Spotted Wearing The Only Shoes Worse Than CrocsFans are already lauding the mask as the must-have accessory of Paris Fashion Week, while others are simply revelling in its madness. As one commenter put it on Business of Fashion’s Instagram page, “he acting up again, and I’m here for it.”“It would be pretty funny if Kanye pulled an MF Doom and just had random people go places dressed up as him,” another fan joked, referencing the late British-American rapper famous for performing with a metal supervillain mask.Speaking of supervillains, check out Kanye acolyte and Louis Vuitton creative director Virgil Abloh’s similarly ridiculous and villainous fit he wore to LV’s show last week.

‘Could Save A Life’: The Simple Text All Australian Men Should Be Sending Their Mates
‘Could Save A Life’: The Simple Text All Australian Men Should Be Sending Their Mates

While we Australian men have never been more open and willing to talk about our mental health or mental health more generally, we’ve still got a long way to go.There’s still this pervasive idea in our society that somehow talking about mental health isn’t ‘manly’. Men are taught to bottle it up and ignore our problems, and at its very worst, make fun of other men who are having mental health issues or who dare bring it up for discussion. All of this makes things even worse.Of course, this stoic, macho Aussie bloke’s culture is a relic of the past. But it’s still a hurdle many men struggle to clear.Half the challenge for many men is just breaching the topic with other men. It’s hard to break through this ‘cult of silence’.Aware of this, one Australian mental health advocate has suggested a deceptively simple way to break the ice with a mate – and one that even the most cynical Aussie bloke could probably get over himself to do.And though we might have said, in the past, “some things just go without saying,” and though there is a certain beauty to unspoken camaraderie, what’s even more beautiful is letting a mate know you are there for them.To that end, Gus Worland, founder of Gotcha4Life, an not-for-profit that aims to “increase mental fitness and end suicide in Australia”, issued this challenge on Instagram earlier this week. And it’s a ripper.

“Send this text to a mate you haven’t spoken to in at least a month to let them know how much they mean to you,” Worland says.

“I love you. I miss you. Look forward to seeing you soon xoxo.”

It’s ridiculously wholesome, but also quite genius. While we can imagine some dudes thinking this skirts the line of being too cutesy (or maybe it’s on the border of taking the piss), that’s kind of the point. Either it gets taken at face value and it’s a lovely message to send to a mate, or it’s a way of using humour to catch someone off guard and spark an important discussion. As Worland puts it, “it’s a conversation starter that can help get deeper connections with your mates and even save a life!”RELATED: You Don’t Need A Psychology Degree To Ask A Mate If They’re OKHaving these sorts of tricky conversations has never been more important. On average, one in eight men will experience depression and one in five men will experience anxiety at some stage of their lives, according to BeyondBlue. Furthermore, men make up an average of seven out of every nine suicides every single day in Australia. It’s the leading cause of male deaths in this country, more than double the road toll.We might find it difficult to have these sorts of conversations as men, but they’re a damn sight easier than having to deal with the untimely death of a loved one.Trent Baldock, Bondi-based marriage celebrant, musician and carpenter by trade, has recently made waves with a raw and honest appeal on social media for people to start talking about mental health more openly, distraught after the loss of two of his mates to suicide over just two days last week. Watch it in full.

Baldock puts it very eloquently: “Enough is enough… Everybody is one phone call away. Don’t be afraid to show vulnerability, don’t be afraid to open up. I would rather sit here and f*cking dumb cry our heart out than bury another mate.”RELATED: Why You Need To Rethink Your Relationship With ResilienceWhen it comes to having a conversation with a mate about mental health, you don’t need to reinvent the wheel. Queensland Health has some good tips about how to broach the subject.Of course, it cuts both ways, too. Reaching out to a mate to check-in might also give you the opportunity to reflect and share your own struggles, which might help them come to terms with theirs. When we’re all open and thoughtful about mental health, we all win.If this article has brought anything up for you, you can chat online or call Beyond Blue on 1300 22 4636 or call Lifeline on 13 11 14.
