How To Keep Your Workout Clothes From Smelling Bad, According To A Germ Expert
How To Keep Your Workout Clothes From Smelling Bad, According To A Germ Expert

We’ve all rocked up to the gym, opened our bag, pulled out a freshly laundered pair of shorts and… wondered where that gross smell is coming from. You dig through the headphones, jumper and shoes to get to the bottom of your kit and…  nothing.

No rotten banana. No fetid socks. Not even a sweaty towel. You raise your thigh huggers to your nose and inhale.

Yeesh.

Your gym shorts have reached the dreaded point where, even after a wash, they smell like a bucket of prawns left out in the sun…

Technically known as ‘rebloom,’ you may not know the word—but you surely recognise the stench. And—ironically—this ‘inflexion point’ is more liable to occur within your expensive activewear than your regular clothes.

This is because in wicking your sweat to the surface (to keep you cool and dry), performance fabrics have “extra nooks and crannies that cling to dirt and odours”, laundry expert Mary Marlowe Leverette recently revealed in Women’s Health.

Mary, a consultant to detergent manufacturers, consumer textile distributors, and appliance developers, also explained that washing powders struggle to penetrate those grooves, and can even trap the bad stuff in.

Oops.

Also, considering how fast your gym shorts dry, they’re actually one of the most common items you forget to wash—despite being the most important-to-wash and germ ridden thing in your closet.

So—to prevent an unholy aroma from ruining your attempt to flirt with your attractive new yoga teacher or PT, here’s how to keep your gym clothes from stinking.

Air Them Out

As long as this doesn’t make you forget to wash them, it’s better to air out your gym gear before it goes in the laundry, rather than letting it sit in a sodden heap.

Chuck ‘Em In The Freezer

If you don’t mind your T-bone steaks going a bit funky, putting your gym gear in the freezer will stop germ and bacteria growth in its tracks. It won’t however, stand in for a proper wash. But if you can’t get to a machine until the weekend, it’s the next best thing.

Don’t Overdo The Detergent

Counterintuitive: sure. But as laundry expert Mary Leverette told Women’s Health, adding extra suds to your wash can cause extra soap scum on your clothes, which can cause a buildup of mould and mildew—food sources for bacteria.

Forget The Fabric Softener

“Fabric softeners can clog the fibres of performance fabrics, keeping water and detergent from getting into those grooves for a deep clean, and messing with moisture-wicking and odour-fighting properties,” (Women’s Health).

Wash ‘Em Inside Out

Not only will this protect your clothes’ colour, but the inside part of your gym gear tends to be the whiffiest.

Pour Some Lemon Juice In With The Load

Did you know citric acid can break down oils from your body stuck in your clothes, which can help demolish persistent odours? Now you do.

Get Over Your Dryer Dependency

Despite your best intentions, when you put a load of clothes in the dryer and sit down for “just one” episode of Netflix, that quick 45 minutes can turn into two hours. And even in the best case scenario, where you remove your clothes from the dryer straight away, they will likely go on to sit in a hot, humid washing basket for a couple of hours (or weeks).

Go Nuclear

Three options here.

  • Add baking soda to a load of washing.
  • Soak the offending items overnight in vinegar.
  • Soak the offending items (particularly if they are mildewy) overnight in buttermilk.

Hedonists Now Have A Lavish New Reason To Visit San Fransisco
Hedonists Now Have A Lavish New Reason To Visit San Fransisco

The Golden Gate Bridge. Cable cars. Alcatraz. Facebook. San Francisco may be known for its bearded hipsters and frugal tech workers but there is now a luxurious addition to that list: MIRA.

Unlike any residential block of flats you’ve ever seen, MIRA is a cross between an unfinished game of Jenga and the abstract dream of a cashed-up Picasso, currently under development by Studio Gang architects.

Expected to host 400 lavish condominiums, MIRA has sweeping views of the bay and more amenities than you can throw a water-bed at.

The building recently celebrated its approval to “top out” at 400ft, which Studio Gang says is, “Especially meaningful… we fought hard for this building to be full height so that we could include more below-market rate units.”

The aspiring Norcal hotspot was designed by Jeanne Gang—the only architect in TIME‘s 100 Most Influential People list for 2019—and as the drool-worthy Instagram teasers attest—he was a smart choice.

In terms of amenities, Hypebeast reports, “The 480,000-square-foot residence will feature various amenities, including a rooftop deck, private lounge, fitness centre, dog washing station, and conference room.”

If you’re interested in buying or renting: “There will be one, two and three bedroom apartments offered, each designed with large bay windows for a panoramic experience,” Hypebeast continues.

“Valet parking will be available for up to 340 cars, in addition to electric vehicle charging stations. In line with the area’s affinity for bikes, there will also be spaces for up to 150 bicycles.”

The first residents are set to move in later this year, so you hedonists and abstract design lovers better get ready to beg for a lease… For more information check out MIRA’s website.

Brave Travellers Can Now Hike The World’s Most Heavily-Armed Border
Brave Travellers Can Now Hike The World’s Most Heavily-Armed Border

Korea’s demilitarized zone (DMZ) is known for barbed wire fences, guard posts and minefields; not tourism. However, in the 66 years since it was erected, this buffer between rival countries (North and South Korea) has unintentionally become a photogenic, 240km long safe haven for animals.

Only problem is, two heavily armed militaries sit 4.5km in either direction, and it’s off-limits to visitors. That is, it was, until last week.

As Vice Asia yesterday reported, “For the first time since it was established in 1953, that DMZ is being opened up to the public for a series of picturesque hiking trails along the volatile frontline.”

Their information comes from the Korea Herald, which reported last Tuesday on the United Nations Command (UNC)’s decision to approve the opening of the DMZ for ‘peace trails’ in Goseong (a town on the east coast border), Cheorwon (a county in the Gangwon Province) and Pajut (a city in the Gyeonggi Province).

Gen. Robert Abrams, who leads the UNC, said in a press release that the Korean military has worked hard “to ensure the success (of this project)… while assuring visitors their safety remains paramount.”

The hike also has symbolic significance, with the April 27th opening coinciding with the first anniversary of the Panmunjom Treaty signed by President Moon Jae-in and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in 2018.

As reported by UPI, the first hikers—a group of 20 South Korean civilians—set off over the weekend to experience the “long-forbidden” zone, reportedly experiencing “mixed emotions” while walking along the barbed-wire fences and “marvelling at the wonderful scenery.”

While only Koreans have been so far, the Seoul government hopes to give visitors of all nationalities the chance to learn from Korea’s “pain of division” as well as enjoy the world’s most unlikely wildlife sanctuary, which now stands heads and shoulders above anything in North or South Korea.

As The Guardian reports, the DMZ is replete with “red-crowned cranes… white-naped cranes…100 species of fish, perhaps 45 types of amphibians and reptiles and over 1,000 different insect species,” as well as “over 1,600 types of vascular plants and  more than 300 species of mushrooms, fungi and lichen.”

And that’s not to mention the rare mammals like Asiatic black bear, musk deer, spotted seals and even tigers (believed extinct on the peninsula since before Japanese occupation), which are rumoured to have made a resurgence as well.

If this strikes your fancy, “The tour will take place twice a day, six days a week, with the maximum number of people allowed for the walking route being set at 20 at one time and the vehicle tour at 80,” The Korea Herald reports.

Facebook’s Version Of Tinder Wants You To Hook Up With Friends…Or Get You Permanently Unfriended
Facebook’s Version Of Tinder Wants You To Hook Up With Friends…Or Get You Permanently Unfriended

Have you ever scrolled through your Facebook friends list during an annual cull and stopped to think: “Oh damn, my friend’s a hottie.” No? Well Facebook now wants you to reconsider your untainted platonic morals.

Say hello to Facebook’s Tinder rival, Secret Crush, an add-on feature like Messenger which encourages users to hook up with people from their existing friends list. The motive behind Zuckerberg’s latest dating feature comes from apparent calls from users who believe that they have ample opportunity for potential romance within their circle of friends. Secret Crush was created to accommodate this yearning for escaping the fatal friend zone.

So how does it work? Facebook users can select up to nine Facebook friends they’re keen on and if they’re also on the dating service, they’ll receive a notification that one of their friends has a crush on them. Love is still a mutual game though and that interest also has to have you on their own Secret Crush list. If you are then you have a match and the rest, they would say, is a fruitful friends with benefits rendezvous fairytale.

Such is the lucrative pull of online dating these days that Facebook Dating, the department responsible for Secret Crush, was announced to be rolling out in 19 countries. Australia or the U.S isn’t on that list yet but if you’re in Colombia, Thailand, Canada, Argentina and Mexico, Malaysia, Brazil, Vietnam, Singapore or the Philippines, then you could soon be getting frisky with a friend.

Whilst there’s already been some online backlash ranging from widespread embarrassment to accidentally matching with your grandmother, Facebook says that its latest dating feature won’t garner users any unwanted attention. They explained at the conference that if your crush isn’t on Facebook Dating, a platform where users can find potential matches in Facebook communities through friends of friends, or events or groups, they will not be aware of your romantic pursuits.

Seriously though, at this rate we’re anticipating a ‘sex with friends’ app soon.

Why You Should Trade Your Next Protein Shake For A Hunk Of Cheese
Why You Should Trade Your Next Protein Shake For A Hunk Of Cheese

Protein is a dish best served shook. With gratinated ice. And sweeteners. Right?

Wrong.

Even if you are a big fan of protein shakes, your post-workout routine could be due for a changeup, if the latest science is anything to go by.

A study came out yesterday, in which Sydney University researchers investigated the side effects long-term high protein intake has on one’s health, and whether consuming protein from different sources could counteract them.

Published in Nature Metabolism, the research demonstrated that—despite the endless quantities of protein powders and snack bars available—a true variety of protein is better for your health.

That’s not to say you should quit the shakes altogether—protein is undoubtedly great for increasing muscle mass—but if you want the best for your health you ought to mix it up a bit.

Concerned that protein’s popularity among everyone from bodybuilders to Keto dieters could be causing us to overlook its potential negative effects, Sydney University scientists Professor Stephen Simpson and Dr Samantha Solon-Biet decided to do some research.

Unfortunately, they found that while protein helps you get jacked, heavy consumption of the branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) that it contains may reduce one’s lifespan, negatively impact mood and lead to weight gain.

There was some good news, especially for cheese-addicts, but we’ll get to that later on. First, let’s understand how the study worked.

“While diets high in protein and low in carbohydrates were shown to be beneficial for reproductive function, they had detrimental effects for health in mid-late life, and also led to a shortened lifespan,” Dr Samantha Solon-Biet explained.

“What this new research has shown is that… it’s best to vary sources of protein to ensure you’re getting the best amino acid balance.”

Before you get too worried about your favourite supplements; the conclusions are not 100% solid, because—so far—the experiments have only been based on mice, in which, the serotonin decrease caused by excess protein intake led to massive overeating, causing the rodents to become hugely obese and die sooner than their regular-diet-eating compatriots.

As Science Daily explains, “Mice were fed double the normal amount of BCAAs (200%), the standard amount (100%), half (50%) or one fifth (20%) for life. Mice who were fed 200% BCAAs increased their food intake, resulting in obesity and a shortened lifespan.”

To counteract this (for the benefit of any human undertaking a similar experiment on the behest of a carb-averse PT), dietitian and public health nutritionist from the University of Sydney’s School of Life and Environmental Sciences Dr Rosilene Ribeiro recommends you eat a wide range of proteins.

“It’s important to vary protein sources in order to get a variety of essential amino acids, through a healthy and balanced diet rich in fibre, vitamins and minerals,” (Science Daily).

The best sources of which are red meat and dairy (so we’re calling it time to whip out the cheese platter), followed by chicken, fish and eggs. Or, if you’re vegetarian, try beans, lentils, nuts and soy proteins.

Oh and—for the adventurous—crocodile was also recommended. But for now, we’ll be breaking our routine up with a French extravaganza…

Pharrell Williams Shows You How To Wear A $1,000,000 Watch With Leopard Print
Pharrell Williams Shows You How To Wear A $1,000,000 Watch With Leopard Print

The man. The myth. The maestro. Pharrell Williams may be 46 years young but his music career and healthy penchant for exclusive watches certainly aren’t slowing down.

At the Something In The Water festival in Virginia this week the renowned artist and designer stepped out on stage with a look only Pharrell Williams could pull off.

The artist paired a white denim shirt in leopard print with denim and cat eye sunglasses – you know, the type your grandmother rocked in the 60s. On his wrist though was something even more prominent. It was Richard Mille’s US$983,000 RM 25-01 Tourbillon Adventure Watch which is limited to just 20 pieces worldwide. And Pharrell is one of those twenty souls who owns one – along with Sylvester Stallone.

“It’s not a tumor!”

The watch was created as a tribute to Stallone’s enduring career as Hollywood’s go-to tough guy. Whilst it may look outlandish the RM 25-01 is purely tactical in its delivery. It employs a lightweight tourbillon movement with titanium components for precise timekeeping without sacrificing wearability. A unique bezel option for the watch sees a Grade 5 titanium lid with a mirrored internal face for easy compass legibility.

But the real kicker? The watch features five water purification capsules concealed in a Carbon TPT compartment for emergencies. Each capsule will create a litre of safe drinking water within a time frame of 30 minutes to 2 hours depending on the fluid’s natural pollutants. A natural rubber strap in obligatory camouflage is included with the piece.

The maestro at work.

Not a bad explorer’s watch that took four years to create. And Pharrell rocked it with granny sunnies and leopard print. What a madman.
