‘Travelling Under The Social Influence’: Campaign Calls Out Habit You Need To Quit

If you visit a luxury hotel and don’t broadcast every inch of it to Instagram, did it really happen? If you drink a coffee and don’t take a photo of it, was it really that good? If you visit a top tier restaurant and don’t rate it on Tripadvisor was the whole night a waste of time?Travel in 2021 is full of questions, and that’s before we even talk about COVID-19. Fortunately, despite this being a year of much doom and gloom, New Zealand is on hand to lighten the mood.Highlighting a tourism sin we’re all probably guilty of these days, the country’s new tourism campaign makes fun of those of us who travel under the “social influence.”The campaign comprises of a two-minute skit starring comedian Tom Sainsbury as a member of the “Social Observation Squad (SOS).”Sainsbury, dressed as a national park ranger, follows tourists to some of New Zealand’s most famous landscapes and tells them to stop travelling “under the social influence.”

“I’ve been alerted to a situation that’s been happening a lot lately,” he says at the start of the video. “People have been seeing those photos on social media, and they’re going to great lengths to copy them.”“You know [the sort]…Hot tub back shot. Man sits quietly on the rock contemplating. Hot dog legs.”The campaign’s message? Stop mimicking photos you see online and “share something new” instead, CNN Travel reports.

Daniel Ricciardo Hits The Big Time With $1.2m Richard Mille Watch
Daniel Ricciardo Hits The Big Time With $1.2m Richard Mille Watch

One of the biggest pieces of Formula One news in 2020 was the announcement that Australia’s very own F1 phenom Daniel Ricciardo would be leaving Renault for McLaren in 2021, joining young gun Lando Norris at the British team. Ricciardo really struggled to find his footing at Renault (which has now rebranded to ‘Alpine’), so the move to McLaren has been exceptionally exciting for Australian F1 fans.So far, the move seems to have paid off. Ricciardo seems re-energised and ready for the 2021 season – being at a more successful, more flush with cash team will do that, we suppose. Another big perk of the move for ‘The Honey Badger’ has been a much nicer “company car”, with Ricciardo quite pleased that he now gets to tool around in a new McLaren 765LT in his down-time.The perks of the job don’t stop there, however. Joining McLaren not only means Ricciardo gets a nicer whip but a nicer watch, too. Ultra-exclusive Swiss watch brand Richard Mille is one of the McLaren F1 team’s biggest sponsors – so Ricciardo is now the proud owner of a RM 50-03 Tourbillon Split-Seconds Chronograph worth over 1.2 million USD, which he’s been proudly wearing in the flurry of promotional images McLaren’s released of the driver in the last few weeks.Produced in collaboration with McLaren, the eye-wateringly expensive watch is constructed from a revolutionary composite Richard Mille have dubbed ‘Graph TPT’. Based on graphene, a revolutionary nano-material which is six times lighter than steel yet 200 times stronger, the watch only weighs 38 grams, strap included. It’s one of the most technically impressive watches RM has ever made, and that’s saying something: the brand is well-known for its use of exotic materials and avant-garde mechanisms.Perhaps it’s this lightness that explains why even performance-obsessed F1 drivers are willing to wear their Richard Milles in the cockpit or even while working on their cars, as Ricciardo’s new teammate Norris was spotted doing last year.RELATED: McLaren F1 Driver Spotted Dismantling His Car Whilst Casually Wearing $300,000 WatchThe 2021 Formula One World Championship will kick off with the Bahrain Grand Prix on the 26th to the 28th of March, with the Australian Grand Prix (which normally opens up the season) being pushed back tentatively to November due to the ongoing COVID-19 crisis. Travel restrictions have also seen the Chinese Grand Prix indefinitely postponed, with Imola returning to the F1 calendar in its slot, formula1.com reports.

Sergio Ramos’ ‘Stronger’ Workout A Majestic Lesson In Core Strength
Sergio Ramos’ ‘Stronger’ Workout A Majestic Lesson In Core Strength

Think leg day is all about legs? Think again. Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos has just shown why a healthy interplay between your core and crus is crucial, in the latest workout he has posted to Instagram. The 34-year-old central defender, whose contract is up for renegotiation this summer, yesterday took to social media to showcase an innovative leg and core workout. Though he doesn’t throw plates around like a powerlifter, the exercises are instrumental in showing how to build functional strength in your pins and protect yourself from injury.“Every day is a new day,” Ramos captioned the video.

A post shared by Sergio Ramos (@sergioramos)

In the clip Ramos works out to Kanye West’s 2007 hit Stronger – an apt song choice considering he is recovering from a knee injury.Ramos can at first be seen doing leg lifts whilst lying supine on a bench, lifting one leg straight and the other cocked, before firing the cocked leg into the air at the summit of the pose.He then shows off some one-legged squats, from a start point of sitting on the bench, and an endpoint of giving his trainer a double high five (which also serves to push him back into a sitting position).RELATED: Australian Commando Shows You How To Build Insane Core Strength With Just Your BodyweightNext, Ramos shows off a glute, hamstring, quad, calf and hip flexor blasting exercise. This one involves lying supine with both legs bent at the knees above your head, rolling forwards off the bench, landing on one foot and standing up, projecting the other leg forward in a stair-climbing-esque pose, with a resistance band wrapped around his waist. To finish, Ramos shows us a shoulder-stand type exercise, which – if the other exercises don’t – would appear to provide the finishing blow to your abdomen (in the best way possible).Building ‘intelligent’ brawn is crucial for protecting against injury. This is particularly important for Ramos, who sustained a knee injury in January, which saw him leave a game against Athletic Bilbao limping. The 34-year-old legend must avoid a crucial (or cruciate) injury to his knee at all costs if he wants to continue in the upper echelons of the sport for as long as possible, following in the footsteps of the likes of 36-year-old Juventus captain Giorgio Chiellini, who continues to defend against some of the best players in the world. His long term fitness projection is also crucial for his upcoming contract negotiations. With his contract soon to expire, Ramos is rumoured to want to leave Real Madrid and join Manchester United at the end of this season, with Give Me Sport reporting, “The legendary centre-back’s contract expires in the summer and it doesn’t look as if the two parties will agree a new deal.”

“Ramos joined Los Blancos from Sevilla in 2005 and has since established himself as one of the greatest defenders of all time… The 34-year-old has won 22 major trophies at the club, including five La Liga titles and four Champions Leagues.”

“He’s still one of the best in the business and should he depart the Spanish capital in due course, Real Madrid are really going to miss him.”Others doubt he will leave Madrid. So long as he continues providing us with workout inspiration, we wish him luck wherever he goes. The big question now is: which club has the financial muscle to pick up his alleged €24 million gross salary demand?

The Right Way To Dress When You Suffer From 'Sloppy Rig' Syndrome
The Right Way To Dress When You Suffer From 'Sloppy Rig' Syndrome

Well it’s that time of year again where legions of men will be force feeding themselves in the name of that beast called ‘Festive Season’.

Gaining a bit of weight is a given but if you’re already out of shape to begin with, you’re going to need to work twice as hard. Besides taking the fitness resolution a bit more seriously come the new year, a more pressing issue is how to dress well.

There are smart little hacks to hide away the extra pounds or kilos until a more pragmatic solution is taken on. So put the delicious chocolate chip cookie down and listen up, we’re going to make sure your style is on point. Once you’re done with that, you can also hit up our favourite clothing brands for big guys.

Never Go Too Slim

seth

It’s common knowledge that a sloppy rig will often lead to a wardrobe full of baggy clothes. At the other end of the spectrum, men who are trying to mask their sloppy body shape can also make the dire mistake of going too tight with their threads.

Pants, jeans, shirts and dress shirts, if they’re too tight they’ll do you no favours in looking good. The key is to keep things slim but not to a point where it begins to contour to your love handles and manly curves. What you want is a balance between airy and slim threads and the best way to achieve this is to try the clothes on before buying them. The world isn’t your own personal wet T-shirt competition so contain those rolls.

Accentuate The Shoulders

zach

Shoulders are the go-to tools for men in need of enhancing their overall appearance. Go for bombers or blazers with a more solid construction on the shoulders in order to add definition and masculinity to your look. Casual blazers normally lack the shoulder structure and tend to sit flat over the body so go for something that is canvassed in order to mask the roundedness.

Layer It Right

jamescorden

Light layering allows a sloppy rig – whether it be skinny fat or actual fat – to add depth to an outfit. It’s best done during the colder seasons and is a proven way to hide a man’s curvier bits. Think a tailored outfit that includes a shirt, waistcoat, shawl cardigan and suit jacket. Be careful not to go overboard though. The goal is to add depth and not more weight to your frame. Layering with thin pieces is an easy way to achieve this.

SHOP FOR LAYERS

Avoid Light Colours & Stripes

jg

Light coloured tops will always reveal the lines of a man’s body more than darker coloured tops. If you haven’t got the most flattering body at the moment, avoid going for white or lighter coloured tops. We’re not endorsing the full Goth look but go for colours such as burgundy, olive, navy or grey. Striped shirts are also a big no-no and will do all in its power to reveal unflattering curve lines on the body. Steer clear of this for now until you hit the gym.

Shop Suits

Steer Clear Of Puffy Threads

gilet

Down jackets maybe functional and gilet vests may look damn good with a suit but when you’re rocking a sloppy rig it’s best to avoid this garment which tends to add weight to your frame. It’s not the good type of definition either with the jacket essentially adding another rounded layer to the outfit. Unless your goal is to look fat when you’re already kind of fat, save the puffy jackets for the snows.

Avoid Shirt Tucking

shirt

Little would realise this but tucking in your shirt actually enhances the presence of love handles. Unless you’ve got less than 20% body fat, tucking will always show off the tightness around the abdomen. Instead, we recommend opting for the half tuck which we’ve explained how to do here.

SHOP LOOSE FITTING T’S

Distract With Slick Hair & Beard

jonah

If you can grow it, wear it. One of the best ways to distract from a sloppy rig is by nailing your grooming chops in the upper region. That means leaving a clean beard and rocking a cool haircut. Don’t let things get out of hand though. There’s nothing worse than being out of shape whilst keeping an unkempt beard and dreadlocks.

Shop Grooming Gear

Dressing For Sloppy Rigs FAQ

Can big guys wear slim fit clothing?

Definitely. Big guys can wear slim fit pants, jeans, shirts and dress shirts, as long as they are not too tight to a point that they highlight your love handles and curves.

How to wear a blazer if you are a big guy?

For blazers, choose those with a more solid construction on the shoulders. Canvassed jackets will mask the roundness of your body and add definition to your look.

What colour shirt should big guys wear?

Tops with darker colours are your friends. Choose burgundy, olive and grey instead of the usual black. Avoid light colours and stripes since they reveal your body’s unflattering curve lines.

Do you go for a handshake or a hug? What’s your stance in regards to pineapple on pizza? Was that dress black and blue or white and gold? Life is full of tricky yet low-stakes judgement calls, some more pedestrian than others.

What isn’t such a common dilemma is one recently proposed by luxury yacht manager Candaş Balcı. The Turkish bon vivant recently shared a photo he took at the 2018 Monaco Yacht Show of a powerboat and a Lamborghini Aventador on display – both machines painted in an outrageously vibrant ‘Miami Blue’ – and asked his followers “which one would you choose?”

The ultimate #FirstWorldProblem? Maybe.

Normally, we feel we’d take the powerboat. Yes, a Lamborghini offers exhilarating thrills and is virtually guaranteed to turn heads when you’re cruising the streets. But being able to push forward a powerboat’s throttle lever and be launched back as you succumb to the acceleration is a feeling that all men wish to experience at some point in their life. It’s just a whole other level of luxury.

However, in the case of this specific photo, we’d go with the Lamborghini. Why? That Miami Blue colouring. In our opinion, it doesn’t work in favour of the boat. Newsflash: the ocean’s blue. If you’re going to drop millions on a high-end powerboat, you want it to stand out. A classic white would suit the boat better, in our humble opinion.

Conversely, the blue looks great on the Lamborghini, and will stand out against any road surface, whether that’s on the track or cruising the streets of Monaco. Most Aventadors get optioned in white, yellow or green, too – so the Miami Blue is even more stand-out. Plus there’s the practicality factor: you spend more of your life driving than motorboating (unless you’re Dan Bilzerian).

Yet opinion is pretty divided between Balcı’s followers, although the powerboat edges out the Lambo 4 votes to 2, while a couple of others wishing to have “both”. Seeing as they’re a matching pair, it would be a shame to break them up, anyhow.

Choosing between these two high-end vehicles is a fun little intellectual exercise for us hoi polloi but it’s a decision that’s perhaps not so absurd in Monaco. The city-state is the richest country in the world with the world’s highest number of millionaires and billionaires per capita, so these sorts of discussions must be a daily occurrence.

Pass the caviar, would you?

Incredible Photos Australians Really Shouldn’t Look At If They Miss Travelling
Incredible Photos Australians Really Shouldn’t Look At If They Miss Travelling

The world is spinning right now. Europe and America are seeing swathes of society succumb to The Bat Kiss, yet citizens are still, in many places, able to travel. In Australia, despite recent flare-ups, our rates of confirmed COVID-19 cases are relatively low, yet we aren’t permitted to fly overseas at all.As we figure out how to avoid becoming a hermit kingdom, whilst also navigating what could, if carelessly treated, become a public health crisis, there is a lot of room for navel-gazing.Since COVID-19 hit, Australia has had lively public discussion around everything from headstands at The Pass to Sydney’s housing prices and the ethics of minimum spends at cafes. That’s not to mention the perils of chasing that Instagram-perfect shot at NSW’s most picturesque waterfall. Some of those are more than valid discussions. Others may make you want to pull your hair out. If you’re in the latter camp, you may want to cast your mind – if virtually – overseas again.Sound familiar? Boy, do we have a picturesque distraction for you. Here are some of the amazing overseas places you can’t travel to right now.Top of the list? The following photo. Posted last week by Cavo Tagoo Mykonos (a luxury resort where prices start at $1,063 a night), the image depicts Instagram user @vacationwold enjoying sunset drinks in Mykonos with a stunning view.

This is not the first time Cavo Tagoo Mykonos has prompted major FOMO. It’s a regular occurrence, with another recent image, taken by user @chrissbergan, and reposted by @cavotagoomykonos, showing yet more antics Australians are not able to indulge in right now.

Another image, posted on Friday, showcases yet another on-trend destination for February 2021. The Canary Islands. These bad boys sit off the coast of North-Western Africa, picking up Atlantic swell, and providing a warm, wild embrace to travellers sick of London’s cold February drizzle or Barcelona’s bleary beats. Heaven for surfers and holiday-makers alike.

It’s not all about Europe, either, Argentina’s Mendoza is another destination which is best visited in February and which is host to Parque Provincial Aconcagua, one of the best destinations for hiking in the world. Parque Provincial Aconcagua is a protected area in the Argentinean Andes, on the Chilean border. It’s home to snow-capped Mount Aconcagua, South America’s tallest peak.

Speaking of hiking, Positano will give you a leg workout for days, though you will most likely eat your way to a perfectly even weight balance (that’s the idea anyway).

Another epic destination to visit is Senja, Norway. Though it’s best to visit in summer for walking, coming in autumn or late winter (read: February) is a good time if you want to see the Northern Lights.

Finally, the Phi Phi Islands are hard to go past for one of the world’s best ‘mind travelling’ destinations, all year round. Just watch out for the digital nomads.

Before any Australians reading this get despondent, just remember that – even though the spas look better on the other side…

… it’s more than possible to replicate almost any overseas experience here in our own backyard.

New Car ‘Unboxing’ A Voyeuristic Pleasure More Australians Should Try
New Car ‘Unboxing’ A Voyeuristic Pleasure More Australians Should Try

‘Unboxing’ has taken the Internet by storm in recent years. For those not in the know, it’s just as straightforward as it sounds: reviewers, normally on sites like YouTube, will unbox or unwrap consumer goods like mobile phones, computers or headphones or on camera, showing off how things are packaged and normally offering a short review of the product. But really, it’s the unboxing rather than the review that people watch these videos for. There’s something oddly compelling and satisfying about them – it’s in the same sort of realm as ASMR videos or watching people slowly work on project cars (if you’re a gearhead like me).But something that’s just as satisfying as unboxing videos – even more satisfying if you’re also a car nerd – is seeing people spec out cars online. Buying a new car used to mean going to a dealership, checking out different cars and physically ticking boxes on an options list; a tedious but necessary process. These days, many car brands let you completely option, customise and order your car all from the comfort of your own home. It’s fun to do yourself, and it’s surprisingly fun to watch others do it too.Don’t believe us? Check out this video by YouTuber Lewis Hilsenteger, whose channel Unbox Therapy boasts almost 18 million subscribers, where he specs out a new Tesla Model S Plaid. It’s hard not to enjoy it.While Tesla has certainly been an innovator in the online car sales space, they’re by no means the only car company in Australia that allows you to buy a new car this way.Other brands that allow you to order their entire range online include Audi, Kia, Hyundai, Škoda, Subaru, Toyota and Volkswagen. A few other brands are trialling online sales by making only a select few models or ranges available, such as BMW (only the 530e), MINI (only the new MINI Electric) and Mercedes-Benz (only the EQC). Notice a theme? Those trial models are all electrified. Wonder what inspired them to do that…As fun as it is to watch someone spec a car online, it’s more fun to do it yourself. It’s really the ultimate form of window-shopping – but as convenient as it is, it’s no replacement for going into a dealer and actually experiencing the car in person. But speccing out a car online is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to how the new car buying experience is changing. Some brands are now starting to offer virtual and augmented reality experiences, and other brands are ditching the traditional dealership model completely. For example, Genesis will bring a car to you, hand you the keys and let you test drive at your pleasure, with their dealerships styled as ‘studios’ which supplement the traditional new car buying process.RELATED: Why Luxury Purists Will Be Impressed By The New Genesis SUVAnother big shift is likely to occur when we start moving to self-driving cars… More of a test ride than a test drive, then? They say the past is a different country, but the future’s feeling pretty alien, too. Space-age stuff indeed.Have a go at speccing out a Tesla yourself using their online configurator here.

Drone Captures Great White Shark At Popular New South Wales Holiday Spot
Drone Captures Great White Shark At Popular New South Wales Holiday Spot

Australia is known as the land of free-spirited influencers, expensive houses, wide-open plains, flat whites and deadly wildlife.Though most residents will quickly assure tourists “it’s not that bad” when they hit you with every spider, snake and shark stereotype they have knocking about in their heads, get out of your Sydney sharehouse and all of the above can still be found. As the BBC reported last year, there were an unusually high number of shark attacks in 2020. Though more research is required to prove it, the increase could have been due to an increased number of whales migrating.RELATED: Drone Spots Great White Shark In Waters Off Famous Sydney BeachThe increase in wildlife has led to an abundance of content for the likes of @dronesharkapp to snap. Speaking of which: videographer behind the app, Jason Iggleden, took to Instagram on Friday afternoon to warn beachgoers about a Great White in Sussex Inlet – an estuary near Jervis Bay on NSW’s south coast, popular with campers, surfers, stand up paddle boarders and fishermen/fisherwomen.

“Great whites again,” Iggleden captioned the post. “I highly recommend not to surf or swim at this beach.”

“I [have] visited this beach five times now in the last couple of months and have seen lots of #greatwhiteshark and #bullsharks around the inlet at #sussexinlet. Video explains everything. Please share around.”

“I think they got the picture as I flew really sporadically around them and they got out,” Iggleden said in the video, referring to the swimmers who appear at the beginning.Around the 2:04 minute mark, you can see what appears to be a great white shark. The Australian Government Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment states the following regarding sharks in the region: “Visitors are warned that sharks are common off beaches in and around Booderee National Park, and a number of shark species which occur here are potentially dangerous. There have been no recorded shark attacks in the region, but there is a small risk. Shark numbers are highest from December to March.”

“No beaches in the Park are patrolled or netted. The McDonalds Aerial Patrol currently overflies beaches from Stanwell Park to Batemans Bay which includes Jervis Bay on weekends and public holidays in Summer. The light aircraft will alert swimmers of sharks by sounding a siren. Park Rangers and Police will alert swimmers if dangerous sharks have been reported near swimming beaches.”There are things that you can do to reduce the likelihood of a shark attack:

  • Don’t go swimming or wading in the sea between dusk and dawn. Many shark and ray species are more likely to be active and feeding at that time.
  • Don’t swim alone. Swim with other people.
  • Don’t swim in murky waters or in estuaries such as Sussex Inlet. Dangerous bull sharks favour those types of waters.
  • Don’t swim around seal colonies, and avoid large schools of bait fish, often noticeable by activity on the surface and sea birds diving into the water. Sharks feed on fish, seals, and seabirds.
  • Don’t swim near wharves and boat ramps where people clean fish and discard carcasses. Sharks are attracted to blood.
