By the time you hit fifty you should be a lover not a fighter. However, for some reason (Bruce Lee we’re looking at you), every man up to the age of about sixty still believes he has a decent roundhouse kick in him.Much like the overweight football fan who harbours the fantasy of playing for his favourite team, the aspiring fly-kicker is probably mistaken. Unlike the overweight football fan, however, the aspiring fly kicker can actually give this highly ambitious task a go.Thanks to Jason Statham’s latest Instagram post, in which he — with great finesse — kicks the lid off a precariously perched glass bottle, it would seem 80% of men online are now set to do the same…
As Statham was challenged by John Mayer to complete the task on Sunday, it appears The Mechanic has only taken 48 hours to get his pistons into motion, which puts the pressure on Guy Ritchie and James Moontasri (a retired MMA artist) — who Statham has now challenged — to complete the task in timely fashion as well. But the question for now remains: who has better technique — Statham or Myers?

Sorry to be the bearer of crinkly news but you could be consuming up to a teaspoon of microplastic a day. This equates to five grams a week per person – roughly the amount contained in a credit card. For the uninitiated, microplastics are tiny particles (a fifth of an inch or smaller) of – you guessed it -plastic, left behind as our shopping bags and coffee cups gradually disintegrate.Anyway, researchers from the University of Newcastle concluded in 2019 that people are consuming about 2,000 of these particles a week, and that’s their conservative estimate. The World Economic Forum have also found microplastic in the seabed, CNN have reported of microplastic leeching into bottled water and the UN has found it polluting the soil. However, even as public awareness increases, many are still confused as to which foods contain microplastic, and – even once they know which contain them – whether they should be completely avoided (after all, shellfish, which is in every other regard a health food, is one of the worst microplastic offenders) or whether eating ‘plastic ridden’ muscles is still better than KFC.Unfortunately, all that aside, the worst source of microplastics observed by the University of Newcastle researchers was the one we can’t avoid: water. The next biggest offenders were shellfish, beer and salt, all of which are predicted to get worse over time as microplastic builds up in in the environment and the creatures that inhabit it.While more research is required before we understand exactly how microplastics affect your health (they aren’t poisonous as such, but the multitude of microplastic studies out there suggest scientists have their suspicions) many in the field believe we ought to trust our intuitions and take it as a potential threat. For instance, the director general of The World Wide Fund For Nature, Marco Lambertini, was recently quoted by the ABC as saying: “We need urgent action at government, business and consumer levels, and a global treaty with global targets to address plastic pollution.”However, given the world’s major players’ tendency to see international conferences as a posturing studio, we thought we’d compile a list of the foods high in microplastic and some alternatives, just in case it takes them a while to get their act together.
Water
One of the worst offenders of microplastics is bottled water, with the World Health Organisation finding 90% of bottled water contained microplastic in 2018, and The Conversation reporting that single-use water bottles have been found to contain between two and 44 microplastics per litre.
“The microplastics came from the packaging, which means we could be exposing ourselves to more of them every time we fill up a plastic bottle in order to reduce waste.”
That in mind, you’d think you’d be safe with tap water out of a glass, right? Wrong. Tap water has been found to contain microplastic too, with one Orb Media finding 83% of the tap water samples they collected from around the globe contaminated with plastic fibres. Is this all down to the floating plastic islands you see on tv? Perhaps not: University of Newcastle researcher Thava Palanisami says “industrial activities” that release microplastic-containing gases and chemicals which — no matter where they are released — eventually sink into freshwater bodies and thus our drinking water, are also a significant part of the problem. The only good news? Tap water has roughly 50% less microplastic than bottled water.
The Alternative
Unfortunately, scientists are yet to discover a way humans can subsist without H₂O. So either move to Europe (where researchers found the tap water to be marginally better) or use an aluminium water bottle and avoid plastic-bottled water.
Shellfish
Of the consumables the University of Newcastle studied, Shellfish had one of the highest recorded plastic levels. This is consistent with previous studies (see here & here) that have found higher concentrations of microplastics in Shellfish than other foods. So — what can you do about it?
The Alternative
Wild caught salmon, mercury-free white fish, fresh calamari.
Beer
The University of Newcastle researchers’ analysis indicated, unfortunately, yes: beer tends to contain microplastics. Seeing as beer is made with water (one of the primary ‘holders’ of microplastic), this comes as no surprise.
The Alternative
Wine.
Salt
Like beer, the researchers also found traces of microplastics in salt, which — as we know the ocean is polluted with microplastic — is as about as much as a surprise addition to this list as beer. In terms of data, “Studies have shown that 1KG of sea salt can contain over 600 microplastics,” (Nest & Glow).
The Alternative
Purchase a high-quality brand of rock salt formed before the world was polluted (i.e. Himalayan pink).Further tips for the microplastic averse consumer include:
- Use loose tea leaves or teabags shut with a string and/or staple rather than teabags with plastic-crimped edges or seals.
- Avoid foods that come in tin cans lined with BPA.
- If you do use a plastic bottle, never leave it in direct sunlight.
- Avoid ready meals in plastic packaging.
- Buy a (glass) keep cup.

It’s been a while since we heard from David Beckham but with the European summer heating up, you can expect to see more from this super dad along with his endless array of wardrobe wins. His latest is something most men are familiar with: the casual suit.Beckham was spotted this week at the FIFA Women’s World Cup in France with his daughter during family duties and he made a point of it by not dropping his dad style game. The football star rocked a pared down navy blue suit with a simple black polo shirt buttoned all the way up and tucked in.
Extra contrast was provided with a brown woven belt and the whole look was polished off with what appears to be a Tudor Black Bay Dark worn over a chunky bund bracelet, similar to the one Beckham rocked to the airport recently.
Simple enough, right? What makes the whole look work is the tailoring of the suit and overall fitment of every garment. Get that right and you’ll often find that your most casual look can often take on a much more dapper edge.So the Beckham lesson of the day:
- Always embrace proper suit fitment – this will make or break your casual look
- Try replacing button-up shirts with polo shirts and remember to tuck
- Rock a cool watch that isn’t overly dressy
- Add texture with a woven belt (none of that flashy Gucci or LV buckle stuff)
- Collect your status as the coolest dad in town

This story was originally published on StockheadIf you’d ignored the haters and just bought some Bitcoin in December when it rock bottom, you’d be up 293 per cent right now.The cyrptocurrency is currently sitting at $US12,649 ($18,000), up from $US3216 late last year. While we hate to say we told you so, Stockhead did note in October the crypto hype cycle may be restarting.Of course, you’d have had to ignore the fact that a year earlier it had topped out at over $US17,000 with a valuation based on fluff and nothing. And conveniently forgotten all of the ASX flameouts that came with it, as every mining shell and biotech husk jumped into it.But this time, so swears Apollo Capital digital assets investor Henrik Andersson, it’s different.Andersson has been swearing it’s different for months, pointing to a gradual involvement by traditional institutions such as Fidelity and the NYSE in areas like clearinghouses and trading, and big investors like Yale and Harvard in actual investments.“In the past six months months we had a number of positive announcements including JP Morgan launching a cryptocurrency, Facebook released a whitepaper for a cryptocurrency called Libra coin, Fidelity started trading and custody for Bitcoin, and Cambridge Associates released its first report on crypto assets in February,” he said today. The NYSE may finally launch its Bakkt Bitcoin futures — delayed since the start of this year — in under a month. But importantly, Andersson considers Bitcoin a “hard asset” like gold, as it there is a fixed amount of it available due to the founding algorithm limiting the total supply.“In less than one year Bitcoin’s supply will be cut in half to 6.25 new bitcoins per 10 minutes; this will likely be bullish for the price,” Andersson said. The Bitcoin protocol says that the reward for adding a block to the blockchain record will halve every 210,000 blocks, which is about every four years. Eventually, the reward will decrease to zero, and a limit of 21 million bitcoins will be reached around 2140, with record keepers being rewarded solely by transaction fees.“And we believe a central banks globally are going from tightening to loosening, which will lead to a rally in hard assets. Bitcoin, like gold, is a ‘hard asset’ with its fixed supply of 21m.”Already gold is benefitting from those macroeconomic factors, cracking the $2000 an ounce record.Stockhead covers emerging ASX companies and investment opportunities. Constant stomach churning, bloating, constipation, diarrhoea and uncontrollable flatulence. It’s something no man, woman or child wants to be subjected to on a daily basis but these are the common symptoms of an unhealthy gut. Medically speaking, gut health covers the effective digestion and absorption of food, the absence of GI illness, normal and stable intestinal microbiota, effective immune status and a general state of well-being.
Whilst quantifying the exact levels of gut health can be difficult, there are proven ways to improve it through careful food supplementation. According to nutrition writer Max Lugarve, the secret to boosting your gut health lies in these nine simple foods which are both readily available and affordable. See the graphic provided below which lists the benefits of each food item.
View this post on Instagram
In the latest post, Lugarve claims that the impact of gut health extends beyond the midsection. “It’s important for nearly every aspect of your being including your weight, metabolism, inflammation, brain function, and more.”
The secret, according to the New York Times best-seller author, is natural fibre from whole foods which nourishes gut health. The broader benefits of eating more natural fibre has also been confirmed in a recent observational study, but as with many health food breakthroughs, quality always trumps quantity.
“When it comes to gut health, we want to aim for foods with prebiotic fibre. Prebiotic fibre is microbiota-accessable, meaning your gut bacteria will consume it and make them happy.”
There are a few warnings that come with consuming these gut-healing foods though. Lugarve says that the key is to go slow with these foods as a sudden increase in prebiotic fibre can cause pretty intense fermentation leading to bloating and worse, flatulence.
Once you’ve got that sorted, you can focus on boosting your metabolism and dropping weight with these everyday foods.

You could be forgiven for thinking SNKRS – Nike’s app for sneakerheads – was a relatively minor part of their predominately mass-market business. But these days the niche sector is no longer just hot air and hypebeasts. In fact, earlier this year The Financial Times ran a piece explaining how sneakers are “trading like stocks.”And things are heating up even further, with Quartz reporting on Saturday that SNKRS has become a crucial part of Nike’s digital outpost, becoming “Nike’s latest way to game supply and demand of hyped products.”
“SNKRS keeps shoppers hungry by sending out regular push notifications about drops every week.”
It also gives customers a better chance of getting the shoes they want at the set price, by notifying them immediately whenever a ‘drop’ is made. The problem? Many of the resellers are also huge sneakerheads — so the black market is still burgeoning. As The Financial Times reported in April — the lines between ‘hypebeast culture’ — where people revel in a shared interest — and a frustrating sh*t fight — where enthusiasts despair at Gumtree entrepreneurs’ monetisation of their hobby — are increasingly blurred.
“Most are small-time entrepreneurs hoping to earn some spending money on one or two pairs, maybe dreaming of snagging once-in-a-lifetime kicks that might bring five figures in the thriving secondary market for basketball-inspired shoes.”
But for some, it’s a “serious second-income business,” suggesting the only difference between an enthusiast and a hawker is how much money they make…Whatever the case, this growing ‘hype culture’ has seen SNKRS popularity skyrocket. In fact CEO Mark Parker told investors on Friday, SNKRS has “more than doubled its business, doubled its number of monthly active users, and now accounts for roughly 20% of our overall digital business.”Even though SNKRS is expected to bring in $750 million this year, a mere drop in the water compared to the $40 billion in annual Nike sales, it helps the brand maintain its ‘limited edition’ reputation even as it makes the bulk of it profits on mass produced goods – and even as the technology landscape gives consumers access to more brands and cheaper prices than ever before.Suffice to say: even if 99% of Nike customers don’t rabidly refresh SNKRS every week, the fact that the hypebeasts and trendsetters never tire of SNKRS’ exclusive drops lends the company a sheen that UnderArmour, for example, don’t quite have.Of course, Adidas, Nike’s largest competitor, has made similar Yeezy-backed forays into the niche market and has also tried to thwart the hawkers who buy and resell with their own release app – Adidas Confirmed. But one might argue it has not been as successful, with it having been incorporated into the main Adidas app in 2018.

How many times a week do you think your best mate has sex? It’s a weird thing to imagine but that is the sort of question Ipsos researchers have put to rather a lot of volunteers.
The results? Most people — men especially — overestimate how often everyone else has sex compared to themselves. Social researcher and Perils of Perception author Bobby Duffy undresses addresses this “remarkable error” in a piece for the BBC.
“As part of Ipsos’ long-running studies, we asked people in Britain and the US to guess how often people aged 18-29 in their country had sex in the past four weeks.
The average guess about young men in both countries is that they had sex 14 times in the last month. But the actual number is just five in Britain and four in the US, according to detailed surveys of sexual behaviour.”
“Our guess would mean that, on average, young men are having sex every other day – around 180 times a year – compared with the more mundane reality of around 50 times.”
But that’s not even our biggest mistake. As Duffy goes on to say, “Men are even more wildly wrong when they guess about young women’s sex lives, in both the US and Britain.”
Men think young women are having sex 22 times a month in Britain, and 23 times a month in the US. But in reality, it’s around five times.
Why is there such a mismatch? Duffy says it could be to do with its secrecy: “Unlike many other core human behaviours, where we can get a better idea of social norms from observation, sex mostly happens behind firmly closed doors,” (BBC).
“Because we don’t have access to very much real-life comparative information, we turn to other ‘authoritative’ sources: playground or locker room chat, dubious surveys, salacious media coverage and porn. These provide extreme examples and dodgy anecdotes that distort our views of reality.”
He also adds that there are cultural influences that encourage women to downplay the number of men they have slept with, and encourage men to bolster their own count, a phenomenon which The Atlantic and Salon have both explored in detail, myth-busting the idea that women have less of a sex drive than men.
“Women’s sexuality is not the rational, civilized and balancing force it’s so often made out to be…it is base, animalistic and ravenous, everything we’ve told ourselves about male sexuality,” (Salon).
However, despite this, studies show men are less choosy than women when it comes to sleeping around casually — suggesting that even though women may want sex just as much as men, they often don’t feel as confident engaging in it.
The solution? Researches and social psychologists agree that better understanding each others’ desires is important for women around the world to feel more confident in ‘getting some’ and for men to stop feeling pressure to be ‘getting heaps’.
