Joe Rogan Shares Simple Formula For Workout Success
Joe Rogan Shares Simple Formula For Workout Success

Joe Rogan has taken to Instagram to share a simple workout motivation hack – visualising how good your workout is going to make you feel.

The 54-year-old UFC commentator and podcast host has come a long way from the early days where he used to shoot the shit on Youtube with fellow comedians like Duncan Trussell (resonating with men who’d never heard ‘tough guys’ be vulnerable before, talking about picking up mugs that were rattling in the footwell of pick up trucks, and showing his vulnerability in the face of the universe – and banging on about psychedelics). Now he shoots the shit on Spotify talking about all sorts of topics with all sorts of people (for a much larger paycheque).

Come to think about it – maybe he hasn’t changed as much as we thought…

Anyway, Rogan has made a name for himself with a “just asking questions” attitude, which his fans adore and his detractors despise, due to it resulting in him giving airtime to people whose views can be interesting (remember when he used to be obsessed with Bigfoot?), but sometimes dangerous to public health, and in some cases espousing irresponsible views himself, such as when he – while, as they say, thinking in real time – pondered on air that perhaps young healthy people don’t need to get vaccinated against COVID-19 (even if he later said: “I’m not anti vax” and: “I’m not a doctor, I’m a f**cking moron. I’m not a respected source of information, even for me”).

We’ll leave judgement on that front to the likes of The Rolling Stone, however. We also, it should go without saying, recommend you get your medical information from experts, not Joe Rogan. Governments and health authorities are encouraging everyone to do the right thing by themselves (there have been cases of healthy, anti vax, fitness fanatics dying of COVID) and their communities and to get vaccinated, even if you are young and healthy.

All that aside though… What you can’t fault Rogan on though is his inspiring attitude to maintaining his fitness, and his ability to resonate with his audience. On that note, he recently took to Instagram to share a very simple workout motivation hack which – ironically, similarly to the aforementioned pick up truck mug story – sounds like the sort of simple, honest, personal advice he has been sharing with his listeners and followers since day dot.

Rogan wrote: “Got up early. Got after it. Feel better now.”

“It’s a simple formula but I have to remind myself every time that it works, and that it’s worth it. Go get you some.”

Super simple yet it rings true. As one follower, fitness trainer Senada Greca, wrote: “Yes! Remembering how afterwards feels, drives me every time! No need for motivation!”

American author, podcaster, and retired United States Navy officer Jocko Willink wrote: “Yep. That’s The Formula.”

The formula appears to have struck home. At the time of writing it has received 340k likes and 3,212 comments.

Rogan is also not the only person to talk about this idea of motivation, encouraging people to rely on other things than sheer willpower to get things done.

“Motivation is not reliable,” former professional surfer Layne Beachley wrote earlier this year on LinkedIn.

“Motivation operates on the assumption that we need to feel a certain way if we want to accomplish great things.”

“A lot of people believe that, if you don’t feel motivated, you simply can not complete a task to the best of your ability – so we don’t even try.”

“We may attempt to motivate ourselves by drinking coffee, looking at vision boards but motivation may not come.”

“Unlike motivation, discipline is entirely within our control. It’s not always the most ‘sexy’ thing, but it is insanely rewarding. More importantly, it puts into motion a productivity cycle.”

“If we wait for motivation, it may never come. By choosing discipline, we give ourselves the power to create results of our own.”

“Discipline thrives on honesty and authenticity. With discipline, you can allow yourself to dislike a task, and commit to doing it anyway.”

What are you waiting for? The gym awaits.

‘HOW IS THIS LEGAL?’: Shady New York City Story Proves Why Airbnbs Are Always A Gamble
‘HOW IS THIS LEGAL?’: Shady New York City Story Proves Why Airbnbs Are Always A Gamble

Airbnbs are always a gamble. You might be served all the prettiest pictures in the world, but until you get there, you don’t know how noisily the nearby train line is going to rattle, how late into the night the neighbours are going to argue or how rancid the sardine factory downstairs is going to smell…

All exaggeration aside, usually it’s not that bad. Usually, the worst that happens is after seeing the perfectly angled photos, you arrive with expectations of a slightly more spacious room than you really get, or you have to walk a bit further than you thought.

But sometimes Airbnbs are spectacularly different to what was advertised. Case in point: the following video. Posted by American TikTok user @desireerosebaker, it shows how an Airbnb can end up looking very different to its photos.

Video: NYC Visitor’s Creepy Find In Her Hotel Room

Desiree’s video begins “these are the pictures from online, two beds, nice view, whatever, good location.”

Then she shows a close up of the window and “the view we thought we had.”

The only problem? There’s no view out onto the street, but rather straight into a restaurant, with a couple sitting having dinner mere metres away.

“I roll up the shades; there are no buildings. We’re in a restaurant. Let me show you.”

“I’m turning on the lights. This is the shade but I need to shut it off because I’m scared they’ll see us.”

“That’s a restaurant – that’s two people eating dinner.”

You then see a couple eating dinner in a restaurant just on the other side of the glass.

Commenters on TikTok made various suggestions like: “I would email Airbnb for a full refund. That was 100% falsely advertised” and “my toxic trait is I’d stand by the window and watch their entire dinner.”

For her part, Desiree captioned the clip: “HOW IS THIS LEGAL. You literally can not make this up. I can open the window and touch their table.”

She then shared, in another video, that the restaurant is in Times Square, and called Tempura, and that the hotel is called Cassa, situated “between West 39th and 38th on 9th avenue.”

Desiree then took to TikTok to give an update on whether she got a refund.

She explained that she reached out to the host when she found the restaurant and said the room’s advertising is completely inaccurate.

She says she didn’t hear back for 24 hours before receiving the following response.

“Hi Desiree, sorry for taking some time to [sic] replay you. Actually we were going to cancel your reservation as we had some room issues, however, we were able to manage to host you. I believe everything went and is going well during your stay and glad to know we were able to host you during this time of year. Best wishes.”

So no, she didn’t get a refund.

A person at the Cassa’s front desk told The New York Post, which first picked up the story, they “didn’t see how the story was newsworthy.”

When asked about the [TikTok] video, Cassa’s concierge allegedly responded in typical nonplussed New York fashion: “Did something bad happen?” they told The New York Post. “Was there a crime?”

Airbnb was more sympathetic, with The New York Post reporting that Airbnb employees promptly emailed Desiree to “apologize for the situation and offer her a voucher for free accommodation in the future.”

And just like that, it looks like it’s time for another gamble…

Want To Skip The COVID Testing Line In Australia? Here’s How
Want To Skip The COVID Testing Line In Australia? Here’s How

As Christmas approaches with all the subtlety of a steam train, Australians are rushing to do two things: buy presents and get a COVID-19 test.

Consequently, the lines at both the shops and many COVID-19 test centres are heaving. So much so that some Australians are being forced to wait hours for their swab.

But an Instagram Story by travel savant Shaun Birley, who was recently trying to get tested in Sydney before going to Queensland, shows there might be a quicker way than just rocking up.

Unfortunately for Shaun, the revelation came too late. But if you are, for whatever reason, needing to be tested in the peak hour leading up to Christmas, then it’s not too late for you.

Video: Aussie influencer Shaun Birley lines up for COVID-19 test, realises there could have been a quicker way

In the video, Shaun zooms in on a window in the background behind the queue, where there is a sign saying: “the line is much shorter in the arvo.” He captions his own video: “Dammit!! Wish I saw that 4 hours ago.”

Shaun isn’t alone in getting stuck in a long line. Various Reddit users in the r/CoronavirusDownunder community have taken to the platform to share their irritation with the long waits they have been experiencing.

One, attaching a rather intimidating video of what looks to be in excess of 70 cars backed up, wrote: “Covid testing line this morning at 6:20am, as we left having just been tested. We had lined up from 5:10am.”

Another wrote: “Got to darebin first thing this morning for testing. 4 hour wait then told to leave. Nearly every other place is horrifically long to wait and drive through testings are all full. People will just stop.”

“Update – last two places included walk ins – 3 and 2 hour waits….I am all for abiding by the rules but this really makes me less judgemental to those who may not check in anymore to avoid contact traces (i will still check in). Why is it like this? UK have home kits and results back next day – Testing wait times are not an issue.”

Various comments in the thread supported the same message Shaun saw in Sydney – encouraging those needing to get tested to go later in the day.

One wrote: “Lots of people going first thing in the morning. Yesterday it seemed that testing was better later in the day.”

Another added: “This. I drive past our local testing site every day, and first thing in the morning the cars are around the block. After lunch time it was only 10~20 cars.”

Though it’s understandable if you want to go in the morning to ensure you get it done (as one commenter pointed out: “Around me the clinics shut early because they ran out of testing equipment. It’s screwed people trying to get tested after work”), it’s a useful insight to keep in mind.

McDonald’s Shocking New Fitness Feature Sparks Debate In America
McDonald’s Shocking New Fitness Feature Sparks Debate In America

An intimidating new fitness feature in a Chinese McDonald’s has gone viral, and now Americans are wondering if this Black Mirror style seat could make its way across the pond.

The source of the controversy? Instilling pedals into McDonald’s seats, so that you can pedal, stationary bike style, while you eat. A popular TikTok video by TikTok user @cris13yu brought this to the world’s attention, with commenters from all around the globe chiming in with comments like: “McFitness” and “This is like using your phone while charging.”

Further witticisms and suggestions included: “only order water and workout for an hour” and “bad for your digestive system… eating needs a relaxed state so it can be digested well.”

A couple more choice comments were: “Still more calories consumed than burned” and “I wish they have this in sg.”

Some even said: “we need this,” tagging their friends and saying: “this concept is amazing.”

“Black Mirror vibes” one TikTok commented added. Another asked: “Do you make free electricity for McDonald’s there?”

The video was also shared by American biohacker Dave Asprey, who had ~thoughts~ about it.

He posted the video to Instagram with the following caption: “Continuing the myth that you can out-exercise a bad diet.”

“No, you don’t earn a potato chip just by using the treadmill. 90% of how you look is what you eat. Muscle and hydration are the other 10%.”

“That being said, going for a walk or even doing a few air squats after a meal will keep your blood sugar from rising as high, because your body will put the blood sugar to work in the muscles that you are moving.”

His followers had strong opinions on this McFitness invention, too. Some McLoved it and some McHated it.

Some of the haters’ comments included: “Not that there are nutrients in that meal, but being active while eating activates the sympathetic nervous system… She won’t digest that food very well,” as well as “This is completely backward and wholly detrimental to our bodies ability to properly digest food that’s been eaten. Wow!”

“This is the dumbest, unhealthiest sad combination of events. I’m shocked this is real.”

Some kept an open mind though. One user simply hashtagged “gains.” Another wrote: “I mean….technically you can out exercise a ‘bad-diet’. If weight management is merely a balance of calories in versus calories out and you expend enough calories throughout the day then you could certainly out exercise that double quarter pounder meal with bacon.”

Along a similar vein, others made remarks like: “I’d still rather be doing this than nothing” and “I have to say, one of my favorite ‘hacks’ of all time is a post prandial walk and air squats if I overdo it, which can happen even with healthy foods that are more starchy than my body can handle. I notice a huge difference – no more crashes!”

There you have it. Some controversy so start your Wednesday morning.

Bondi Residents Resort To Parisian-Style Parking To Survive Summer
Bondi Residents Resort To Parisian-Style Parking To Survive Summer

Bondi Beach is easily one of the most famous beaches in the world. Perennially popular among locals and tourists alike, the Sydney surf spot is always a hive of activity – and might just be one of the hardest places in the Southern Hemisphere to find a park, and that’s saying something, considering how much of a nightmare parking is in Sydney more broadly.

You really have three choices: park on the beach and feed half your life savings through the meter (that’s if you can even find a park there), park halfway back to the city, or try your luck in the rabbit warren of back streets for something close to the water. But you’re not even safe if you find a park, as one visitor recently discovered.

A now-viral TikTok shows how a tourist from Victoria and her Volkswagen Caddy van found herself parked in so aggressively by another car, a Mazda 2, that she could only just open the boot without scraping the Mazda’s bonnet. We’re talking millimetres here.

And we thought the French were shameless about parking people in… [Watch above]

While it’s not clear whether or not this is a disgruntled local just trying to park in front of their own house (fair enough, we reckon) or another day-tripper who’s taken an unnecessary chance (perhaps a more likely situation), whatever the case, it seems we’ll soon have to go ‘full Paris’ when parking in Bondi…

RELATED: BMW Owner’s Extreme Solution To Paris’ ‘Aggressive’ Parking Culture

Commenters were firmly on our heroine’s side, leaving choice remarks like “slam it” and “what jokers”. Even the TV-famous Bondi Lifeguards chimed in, simply commenting “yikes”. This one really sums up the prevailing sentiment:

“That bonnet has ‘key me’ written all over it. What sort of flop parks that close?”

It seems Bondi has become a bit of a mecca for shithouse drivers in recent years. It’s hard to forget the spectacularly bad parking job one Range Rover driver pulled off at South Bondi last summer, where the two-tonne SUV went through a guard rail and flipped down onto a pedestrian walkway. Parallel parking isn’t that hard, people.

Indeed, many of the worst offenders when it comes to parking around Australia’s most popular beaches seem to be Range Rover drivers. The high-end British cars have garnered a notorious reputation around Byron Bay over the last two years in particular – a visible sign of the cultural shift the seaside town has endured.

Just don’t do what I did while parking at Bondi once: on a Saturday, I parked in a school carpark near the beach, thinking I’d come across a good thing. When I came back from my swim, I found the school gates had been closed and came to the uncomfortable realisation that I wouldn’t be able to get my car until Monday. How embarrassing…

Keanu Reeves Gets Sent To Detention For His ‘Schoolboy’ Style Error
Keanu Reeves Gets Sent To Detention For His ‘Schoolboy’ Style Error

Keanu Reeves is many things – a great actor, a committed philanthropist, one of the nicest guys in Hollywood – but a fashion obsessive he is not.

The lowkey 57-year-old action movie star rarely dresses badly, but style isn’t one of his top priorities. He’s a simple soul who likes motorbikes and watches, that’s all. But his latest outfit might just be a bit too much of a misstep.

On the red carpet for the US premiere of The Matrix Resurrections in San Francisco earlier this week, Reeves was conspicuously more casual than the rest of his co-stars, opting for a simple black suit with a loosely-tied striped tie.

There’s nothing wrong with the suit, but the tie’s pattern – as well as the fact it’s not sinched up all the way and combined with Reeves’ casual demeanour and – makes him look rather like a schoolboy. No extra credit for you, Keanu.

Image: Getty

Diagonally striped ties – also known as regimental or rep ties – are a common element of school uniforms across the Commonwealth, especially here in Australia, where they’re closely associated with private or selective schools.

“Its origins stem from the UK’s regimental stripe ties of the turn of the twentieth century. The stripes were angled from left to right, or from ‘heart to sword’, in a nod to their fighting roots. As social clubs and boarding schools adopted the trend, the look was increasingly fashionable among civilians,” Brooks Brothers explains.

When choosing a rep tie, choose one that doesn’t look so obviously school uniform-y: avoid ties made with very shiny silk fabric or those with thick stripes. School ties also tend to have fairly restrained colour palettes (and usually use primary colours) so perhaps try something with subtler shades and more textural touches. Pair with a well-tailored suit to avoid looking like a teenager.

The Matrix Resurrections, the fourth Matrix film and the first since 2003’s The Matrix Revolutions, has Keanu reprise his career-defining role as Neo for another action-packed sci-fi romp. It’s set to hit movie screens across the globe on December 22nd, and will also be available on the ad-free tier of HBO Max in the United States for a month beginning on the 22nd, too.

Making This One Mistake Is A ‘Dead Giveaway’ You’re A Tourist In Paris
Making This One Mistake Is A ‘Dead Giveaway’ You’re A Tourist In Paris

There are a lot of heinous travel crimes one can commit in France. From eating your baguette the wrong way to ordering an extra hot cappuccino, it’s a minefield. Not to mention: there are also the faux pas of going to the shops on a Sunday (and expecting them to be open) and expecting assistance from a shop assistant.

But there’s one crime that’s worse than any of these awkward moments or interactions. That crime? Exhibiting any small sign that you might be enjoying yourself. On social media or otherwise.

We were alerted to this by a comedic skit by the popular Instagram account Parisian Snobiety.

The skit, which can be seen below, makes fun of tourists for, basically, enjoying themselves, and doing cliche Paris things.

The captions of the skit read:

“No one:

People who visit Paris:

Bonjour from Paris. My Dream. Chanel and Louis Vuitton… are my favourite. Let’s get croissant. Give me a French garcon (boy). In the city of love. Do you remember the Notre Dame fire? So Sad! I’m Emily In Paris. Gracias.”

Though taken to absurd levels, the video skewers how many of us act while in the city of espresso and motorbikes.

Of course, you’d have to be a bit of a grinch to really be bothered by tourists enjoying themselves and trying (sometimes too hard) to blend in. Likewise, you’d have to be quite self-conscious to avoid enjoying many of these tourist rites of passage just because some Instagram account made fun of them.

The right balance is probably somewhere in the middle.

In fact, it might help you feel less self-conscious to know that there is actually a good reason for Parisians’ inclination to be suspicious of (or mocking towards) tourists’ showing their happiness.

As journalist Emily Monaco once wrote for the BBC, foreigners – especially Americans – often misread Parisians’ emotional detachment for resentment, when it is actually a cultural resting state: “If you’re too happy in French, we’re kind of wondering what’s wrong with you.”

Julie Barlow, a journalist and author, is quoted by the BBC as saying: “French people prefer to come across as kind of negative, by reflex.”

Another theory, by humorist David Sedaris, is that Paris’ perceived hostility isn’t complicated or even unique – it’s just down to a “big city mentality” found in all corners of the world – from New York to Sydney. That said, even he acknowledges that you would do well to be fearful of Parisian cashiers regardless.

“In Paris the cashiers sit rather than stand. They run your goods over a scanner, tally up the price, and then ask you for exact change,” (David Sedaris).

Bonne chance, people, bonne chance…

Emirates Takes Delivery Of The World’s Last New Airbus A380
Emirates Takes Delivery Of The World’s Last New Airbus A380

Emirates has taken delivery of the world’s last new Airbus A380, which was flown to Dubai from Hamburg last week. This signalled the end of 16 years of production of the much-loved jet (252 were built in total).

To mark the occasion, the aircraft was flown in a heart-shaped circle around Germany. This was noticed by Flight Radar 24, and posted to their Twitter account. Their followers quickly chimed in with how this moment made them feel.

“NO YOU’RE CRYING,” one wrote. “Love [love heart emoji],” wrote another.

Airbus took to Twitter with the following: “As we get ready to hand over MSN272 to @emirates, here’s our Flight Test team sending some Red heart to all #A380 fans out there.” One Twitter user said this was “very sad” and that it was “one of the most comfortable planes ever.”

Further comments included “so sad it’s the final build” and “they made 15 hour flights slightly tolerable.”

They won’t be making 15 hour flights slightly more tolerable forever though, with this latest delivery to Emirates being the very last one. That said: at least customers will be able to enjoy an A380 – a jet that can fit up to 853 passengers – for a few years to come (or until the airlines currently using A380s retire them all).

Airbus’ CEO Guillaume Faury also took to Twitter to share his thoughts.

He wrote: “It’s been a very remarkable week. To wrap it up I couldn’t resist sharing a priviledged moment in Hamburg: the delivery of @Emirates ‘ final #A380, plus a special guest – ‘MSN001’ the original A380. Thanks to all Airbus pioneers & partners who contributed to this iconic aircraft.”

The A380 was called the future of aviation when it first was introduced.

In recent years, however, due to COVID (and the jet failing to fulfil the commercial vision of its designers) airlines have been favouring smaller aircraft.

Airbus announced plans to stop making the jet in 2019 due to a lack of demand.

Indeed, Reuters reports that “production of the world’s largest airliner – capable of seating 500 people on two decks together with perks such as showers in first class – has ended with just over 250 delivered to airlines compared with the 1,000 or more once predicted.”

The age of the superjumbo isn’t over yet though. Emirates has now received 123 A380s and they will continue operating them for the foreseeable future (British Airways and Singapore Airlines use A380s for some routes too, and Qantas is also reportedly backing it as well).

So, even though it’s true that the pandemic saw many of the world’s A380s fall permanently out of favour (as CNN Travel reports, “Lufthansa’s decision to park its A380 turned into the German carrier permanently retiring the superjumbos, while AirFrance also retired its last A380”), other airlines are still banking on the A380’s popularity with passengers, and gradually putting it back onto some flight paths.

After the last ever A380 was delivered to London (before it was flown to Dubai), Tim Clark, Emirates’ president, said the A380 will “remain Emirates’ flagship product for the coming years” calling it “a vital pillar of our network plans.”
