Bitcoin may be a risky financial investment but that doesn’t mean the underpinning technology isn’t useful. And if you like travel, cars or money, you’re going to want to wrap your brain around this: a new blockchain initiative for the automotive industry has just been announced in Dubai.
At first glance it doesn’t sound exciting; but when you consider how it could make the industry of global transportation less expensive, safer and more widely accessible to citizens around the world, it becomes more relevant.
As reported by Bitcoin Magazine, “Companies ranging from IBM and Context Labs to Ford and BMW announced their collaboration at this year’s Futures Blockchain Summit in Dubai and have gathered together to form the Mobility Open Blockchain Initiative (MOBI).”
This initiative purports to study how blockchain technology might put power back in the hands of consumers by:
“Giving them strict sovereignty over their vehicular transaction data, identities and driving data, making their personal information less vulnerable to fraud and cyber-thieves.”
Chris Ballinger, the ex CFO of the Toyota Research Institute, will serve as the organisation’s chairman and CEO, and has assured Bitcoin Magazine the project is expected to be mutually beneficial, saying: “Blockchain and related trust enhancing technologies are poised to redefine the automotive industry and how consumers purchase, insure and use vehicles.”
“By bringing together automakers, suppliers, startups and government agencies, we can accelerate adoption for the benefit of businesses, consumers and communities alike.”
According to a Reuters report, MOBI is actively working with companies, “Accounting for over 70 percent of global vehicle production,” including, BMW, Bosch, Ford, General Motors, Renault, ZF and Aioi Nissay Dowa Insurance Services USA.
Happy to share that we have joined @MOBI_Connect, a new consortium that is exploring how blockchain will reinvent mobility! More: https://t.co/WhfFpP12ym pic.twitter.com/WGh4E9kBTh
— Hyperledger (@Hyperledger) May 2, 2018
Using an open-source business design, MOBI aims to increase blockchain usage among businesses that develop and deliver autonomous vehicles. As seen in Blockchain Magazine, invitations have been sent to, “Various automakers, public transportation operators, toll road providers, blockchain firms, technology firms, academic institutions, startup entrepreneurs and even global regulatory bodies.”
Although hopping on the crypto-bandwagon is great for publicity, as Engadget points out, “There’s no firm timeline for when any blockchain technology might show up in cars.” However when it does, “As there would be fewer (if any) gatekeepers, this could reduce the cost of the services you use without compromising on security—a trip in a self-driving taxi might be slightly more affordable.”
Happy to be a part of @helbizofficial, a #blockchain project coming soon shaping the future of peer-to-peer car sharing and cryptocurrencies, rent out your car without manual involvement. Brace yourselves, gym junkies. You’ve put in the supersets, the countless burpees, the deadlifts and now it’s Friday and you want to let your hair down. Beer? Too many calories. Whisky? You’re not wearing that snazzy suit you stole from the Monopoly man down the street. Vodka it is.
Not just any vodka…diet vodka. Fans of the spirit who also happen to be weary of their gains can now bask in the glory that is Ketel One’s Botanical collection, a trio of drinks which boast just 73 calories per shot. That makes it 25 percent less calories than Ketel’s standard vodka and 40 percent less calories than your standard white wine.
The new ‘diet vodka’ collection is clearly targeted towards the health-conscious generation and comes in three flavours to make it sound…healthier. Think the summery appeal of cucumber and mint, peach and orange blossom and grapefruit and rose.
Cameron Northway who is the Managing Director of specialist drinks agency Sweet & Chilli believes that it’s simply progression in the industry.
“There’s definitely a spot in the market for it as we’re seeing it across the board with all F&B products, especially with drinks,” he says.
“Take Seedlip for as an example, it is a non-alcoholic distilled spirit which sounds out there, but it’s a great alternative for those that want to have a social drink but limit their alcohol intake.”
Whilst it’s all in good nature to poke fun at a ‘diet vodka’, it’s worthy to note that Ketel One Botanical won’t be marketed exactly as that. The label on the bottles stipulate that they are “made with vodka”. The reasoning? Distilled spirits in the United States and Europe require a 40 percent alcohol content to be classified as vodka. The percentage drops to 37.5 percent for the flavoured versions.
Where Ketel One Botanical sits then is in a very unique space on its own.
“There actually doesn’t exist a classification for this product,” says Jim Ruane, director of Ketel One Vodka.
“It’s not a flavoured vodka because of our two-tier production process, with the second distillation and the flavour infusion at the end.”
At least online pundits seem to have embraced the idea.

Some people will criticise anything. However there’s a fine line between a cute-couple post and a #weekiversary status that makes even your Grandma cringe. Relationships are tough enough to navigate at the best of times, let alone in a climate of celebrity power-couples and the minefield that is Instagram. But all budding couple’s should know this: A new ‘bae’ is like a newborn—people like to know you’ve got one, but then their care factor dies a newsfeed-clogged death. In 2010 these loved-up duo’s could be forgiven for being Zuckerburgian lab-rats, but these days it’s common knowledge that bi-weekly #love posts and dubious #couplegoals cultivate more eye-rolls than ‘fans’.So why do people keep doing it? We talked to Jennifer Douglas, a couple’s counsellor from Relationships Australia, to find out.
“Over sharing of a relationship may suggest an insecurity and a need for an audience, attention or acceptance but on the flip side may suggest that they are very secure and have complete indifference to the views of others, are not influenced by the judgment or knowing of others.”
In other words: you’re either compensating for something or are so self-confident that you simply DGAF what other people think. Sounds fair enough, actually. But then, as has been pointed out on Twitter, if you really don’t care what other people think, why conduct your fun n’ games in a public forum? And if you do, surely you have a moral obligation to your audience to explain everything if you break up?
Here’s the thing about social media PDA. If you’re going to shove your relationship down our throats for months and then just break up and delete every pic with no explanation, that’s kinda shitty, WE DESERVE ANSWERS
— Broseph (@CapeCodJoe) April 19, 2018
On the flip side, Jennifer said that under-sharing:
“Can be problematic if there is a big disparity or disagreement between a couple as to what is shared; when it is shared; and to whom. There may be strong differences in opinion and values as to what is considered private and to be kept within the domains of the couple relationship. How the couple communicate, negotiate and be respectful of this difference can give rise to escalations in conflict.”
The cynics will take that to mean you’re screwed either way. Dr Phil would say something trite about ‘balance’.We’re just going to leave it with you.RELATED: Relationship Experts Say It’s Healthy To Follow Models On Instagram

How do you Europe? Layover mainstays tend to be Singapore and Dubai, but this latest development could tempt you to go via Los Angeles or Hong Kong.
Even if you don’t have time to check out Long Beach or Lantau Island on your stopover, a new Virgin partnership means that guests from the UK and Australia can now “travel effortlessly” between the two countries on Virgin airlines, via LA or HK.
This codeshare offering will include Virgin Australia’s Sydney-Hong Kong services that will commence operations on 2 July, in addition to the Melbourne-Hong Kong services already on offer. Virgin have said of the changes that:
“This is exciting news for customers, as the codeshare will provide them with more flexibility when booking long-haul services between the two countries.”
Key benefits include, “providing guests travelling from the UK with options for convenient connections to eight cities on Virgin Australia’s domestic network (Adelaide, Brisbane, Cairns, Canberra, Gold Coast, Hobart, Melbourne and Sydney), expanding the customer offering to include new connections on Virgin Australia’s domestic network, being Adelaide-Sydney, Adelaide-Melbourne and Canberra-Melbourne; and allowing guests to organise all flights, including the connecting flights, under the one booking, with a single check-in and baggage drop.”
Virgin have also said that the new arrangement will allow Virgin Atlantic Flying Club members to earn miles, and Virgin Australia’s Velocity Frequent Flyer members to earn Points and Status Credits, “when flying with either airline under the codeshare.”
Virgin Atlantic offers up to three daily services between London Heathrow and Los Angeles, with a daily service to Hong Kong. Both routes are operated on its Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, the newest aircraft in its fleet.
As for LA, Virgin Australia operates up to 18 flights per week (from Australia) on its Boeing 777-300ER fleet. It also offers daily services between Melbourne and Hong Kong, and will be launching daily flights between Sydney and Hong Kong on the 2nd of July 2018—using its A330-200 aircraft—which features the award-winning Business Class product, ‘The Business’.

Whether you think Bitcoin is fools gold or a revolutionary internet ledger, when the ‘Oracle of Omaha’ gives you his 2 cents worth (of his $84.1 billion), you take a pew and listen.
And for the ‘hodlers’ (people who ‘hold on for dear life’ to their bitcoin) and wannabe crypto-capitalists, there’s bad news: bitcoin is a gamble, not an investment. Although it’s old news that Warren Buffet—the Berkshire Hathaway CEO (and the world’s third-wealthiest person, according to Forbes)—is skeptical of crypto currencies, this weekend he elaborated on the subject, telling Yahoo Finance, “If you buy something like bitcoin or some cryptocurrency, you don’t really have anything that has produced anything. You’re just hoping the next guy pays more.”
He went on to say:
“There’s nothing wrong with it. If you wanna gamble somebody else will come along and pay more money tomorrow, that’s one kind of game. That is not investing.”
So whilst he’s not saying you can’t make money out of crypto, he is saying your crypto-dork mates shouldn’t call themselves investors. As Buffett’s financial success came from buying sturdy firms with business models that are easy to understand and hard to disrupt, it’s hardly a surprise he’s skeptical of the opaque technology sector (and of bitcoin), which he called a “mirage” in March 2014.
He says that this is because, “its value is too dependent on trading” (Coin Desk), giving the following comparison.
“Now if you ban trading in farms, you can still buy farms and have a perfectly decent investment… but if trading in bitcoin was banned, people would have no reason to invest.”
However, Australians are crazier about crypto than ever. Crypto Briefing reckons this is because Australian culture has always celebrated the underdog, saying that, “These Australian attributes very much mirror the cryptocurrency movement. Cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology are underdogs in the larger financial trillion dollar industry run by big powerful incumbents and rule makers.”
One thing is for certain though: Whether or not the “powerful incumbents” like Mr Buffett are just insecure, or if they are dead-right about the crypto movement, your self-proclaimed crypto-investor mate who still lives in his parents’ basement is probably still a kook.

Forget your collared shirt and charm; alcohol is all you need to get consistent upgrades.
Think about it: any sucker can dip their toe in business—what’s impressive is staying there because (let’s face it), no one wants to go back to the land of scratchy blankets and screaming kids.
Jay Whitmore, Qantas’ “official-unofficial” favourite frequent-flyer, made the switch about five years ago and hasn’t looked back since. A self-described “points hacker”, part of the reason he is able to regularly fly Business is his passion for wine.
“Whether it be through credit card scheme rewards or buying wine off Qantas epiQure that’s how I build up my points balance.”
He went on to say, “I used to buy from retailers like Dan Murphy, but once I started to realise the wines I was trying when I was flying business class I could also buy online, I started to buy every time I flew.”
RELATED: The Best Australian Shiraz, According To People Who Drink It For A Living
A case of $200 wine gets you 200 frequent flyer points, but as Jay tells us: premium members get 3 points for every dollar they spend (and there are bonus offers where you can earn between 2,000 and 10,000 points per case). So if you’re strategic about it (or if you’re planning a wedding) you can get an upgrade without becoming a raging alcoholic.
He says, “For me it only costs 10, 000 points (16 cases of $200 wine) to upgrade to Business for a Melbourne to Brisbane flight. Also work flies me Business class to LA twice a year and I often use my points to upgrade to First, which for me is the best value use of points.”
Yes, you heard that right: as long as you’re a wine-enthusiast, upgrading to First Class isn’t extravagant—it’s “good value for money”, because if you buy your Business class seat on sale, you can still upgrade to First for the same amount of points as if you had paid full price for your Business seat.
“A return Business ticket on sale from Melbourne to LA is six to eight thousand, while a First Class return would be thirteen or fourteen grand, so to upgrade both ways (which costs 200, 000 points) gives you six or seven grand’s worth of value because you’ve bought your Business class seat on sale, but the ratio of points doesn’t change.”
Jay recently had to reduce the size of his pantry to fit a new 660 bottle wine-fridge in the kitchen, and has no regrets whatsoever. The only warning he has about the velvety-smooth highlife is, “If you’re coming back from a wine tour don’t put it in the overhead bins.”
“I was flying back from South Australia with my mother, and she put four bottles of wine in the overhead lockers, the seals broke and the lady in front started complaining there was water dripping on her. No-one could work out what was wrong. Only at the end of the flight did we realise that it was our Shiraz…”

There are some ridiculous reviews drifting around the internet—full of the mind-numbing stupidity, hysteria and entitlement that gives tourists a bad name. Some of our TripAdvisor favourites include, Lost In Spain: “The street signs weren’t in English. I don’t understand how anyone can get around”, Time Machine In The Caribbean: “It took nine hours for our flight to get from the UK to Antigua but the Americans at our resort said it took them just three,” and Sight Seething In Kenya: “The elephants we saw on our honeymoon were visibly aroused which made my wife upset and made me feel inadequate.”However if you’re looking for brutal honesty—both from hotel receptionists and their customers—New York is the only place to go. Of course: many of these reviews were curated in a sleep-deprived mist of indignance (if you’ve ever felt duped you’ll know it), but if even half of it is true; these places are worth visiting. So go on: indulge yourself—admit you have as perverse a curiosity of The Grimy Apple’s underbelly as we do—and have a read…
Bowery Grand Hotel
Located in Manhattan, the Bowery Grand Hotel describes itself as “perfect for a one night stay”, offering guests air-conditioned rooms with a shared bathroom, and free wifi. Sounds innocent enough. However, when you have self-proclaimed cheapskates like Booking.com user ‘Cheap0Traveller’ saying, “I am not sure if the money I saved is worth it,” you’ve got to wonder what really goes on there.Kareem didn’t fare much better, calling for a documentary to be made about the place, possibly not to highlight what a great time he had.
On the plus side, he was alive the next day. Our next reviewer however, said without a trace of irony, that you need Bear Grylls skills to survive.
“The only reason I stayed there was because I am a rugged man who can adapt to any situation.”
Others recommended that you “bring a sleeping bag” if you can, or “cover the pillow with a jumper” to avoid stains, hair etc.
World Hotel
The World Hotel, much like the Bowery Grand, is on the very limit of what can be defined as a hotel rather than hostel. A single room here goes for roughly $77 AUD per night, which gets you cable TV, individual climate control (on request) and a daily newspaper—all well and good, right? Wrong. In fact our first guest M, probably would’ve preferred they cut back on the TV and news budget, and hired a few more cleaners (to be fair he takes the cockroach infestation in very good humour).Marcus on the other hand, had more serious issue on his… uh, fists?
And Michael likened the place to some of the more classy Breaking Bad mis-en-scènes.
The Vanderbilt YMCA
Our final budget accomodation bears the name of one of the upper east side’s most powerful old money families: the Vanderbilts. Unfortunately for ‘Carissa L’, a room in The Vanderbilt YMCA has more in common with a shoe box than a scene out of Gossip Girl.
“If I could rate this place lower than 1 star I would.”
So if you want the authentic city-that-never-sleeps experience: it’s not enough to buy a couple of dodgy hotdogs and pretend you’re Harvey Spectre from Suits. In fact, if you don’t spend at least one night at one of these hotels, even if you can afford not to, some might say you haven’t really even been to New York.

It’s time someone stood up and said it. Ageing gracefully doesn’t need to mean you can’t do anything about it.Somewhere along the line it became the norm to accept what fate and Mother Nature threw our way whether it be balding, dark spots or wrinkles. But since when did ageing gracefully have to mean inaction? Not today. It’s time to change things up to get your tired old self looking like new again. These simple changes to your personal care routine will ensure you’ll get carded at bars again before you know it.
Prevention Always Beats A Cure
Unfortunately there’s no procedure for transplanting your skin if you screw it up (FYI Face/Off was just a film). The only solution here is to care for it from the beginning meaning right now. Maintain a regular regimen of cleaning, moisturising and protecting your outer layer as it sees most of the daily elements. One of the biggest culprits is of course the sun. Always apply sunscreen even when you don’t think you need it and it looks overcast. The tan might be tempting, but melanoma is a good look on no one. If you do need to bronze up, go the fake tan route. Your future self will thank you for it later.
Maintain A Healthy Weight
Weight can have a significant affect on the age you look. This doesn’t necessarily correlate to being just overweight but also underweight. No one has ever said “Look how youthful that gaunt man looks!”The solution is to hit the gym regularly and stabilise your diet to incorporate less processed foods that are high in saturated fats and sugars. Replace these bad boys with natural foods, drink lots of water (your body needs it to function as the body’s water content needs to be at around 65%) and workout.
Keep Your Hair Short
The long locks you used to rock looked cute on you as a teenager, but the charm wears off as you get older. Shorten up your style and give your do a new lease on life with a cleaner and more refined look.Go for a hairstyle that’s on trend without going over the top like you came straight off a runway. The right style will look both modern and timeless whilst contributing towards a younger looking you.
Keep Facial Hair Trimmed
They’re called beard trimmers and shavers and we suggest you use them. Whilst it’s fun to exercise your masculine right to grow an unruly beard, it isn’t always the best option if a youthful look is your end-game. Also don’t forget to keep a check on unruly eyebrows and anywhere else hair may protrude around your pretty mug.The heavily rugged look may suit your friendly neighbourhood hipster, but it will also make you look older.
Grey Care Coverage
Silver foxes are cool, but we’re sure it can wait another decade or so whilst you work on perfecting your prime. Grey hair can instantly add years to your look so consider covering it up with hair colouring products designed specifically for men.A lot of them come in simple DIY kits these days so getting the job done is a quick and easy affair. Jane in accounts will be so impressed she’ll be asking YOU out in no time.
Clean Your Teeth
And don’t forget your teeth. Smiling is a big part of looking more vibrant and younger so make sure you keep those pearly whites sorted with regular visits to the dentist to remove damaging plaque.Brushing twice daily and using mouth wash will help keep your teeth and gums in good nick – a must if you’re a prolific tea or coffee drinker.

“I’m not a celiac but…”
Some call the Keto diet a celebrity-fad palatable only to cross-fit warriors and Bondi hipsters. Others reckon it’s an energy-boosting weight-loss program that cures diabetes, epilepsy and arthritis. We talked to The Paleo Chef (and MKR judge) Pete Evans, Transform Health dietician Jordan Ponder, and nutritionist Zoe Bingley to get the inside scoop.
What did we find? Let’s just say that before you follow in Lebron’s Ketogenic footsteps you’re going to want to read this guide.
What Is The ‘Keto’ Diet?
Ketosis is an evolutionary mechanism the body initiates to survive when food intake is low. The Keto diet is basically a way to trigger it (without starving). This involves replacing foods high in carbs (pasta, bread etc.) with one’s higher in protein or fat (meat, leafy greens etc.).
The reason this triggers Ketosis is because your body typically burns carbohydrates before its reserves of fat, so if you deprive yourself of carb-rich food, even if you are consuming a healthy number of calories, you trick your body into thinking it’s starving.
Jordan Ponder, a dietician at Transform Health, says that this causes the body to break-down fat into substances called ketones (a process which takes place in the liver), using them for energy instead of glucose—the broken down version of carbohydrates the body normally uses for fuel.
What Happens When You Enter Ketosis?
Many people experience a “low-carb flu.” This typically occurs during the first few weeks, making you feel mentally and physically weak. You may be hungry even after eating, lethargic, dizzy, and low on energy. In fact, if you’ve ever skipped a couple of meals, you’ve probably entered Ketosis.
According to Pete Evans, when this happens, “Your body is clearing the junk out of it and readjusting to how it is best designed to run.” In order to overcome the negative effects, he recommends you change your diet gradually.
“I always advise to work with a functional medical doctor who is up to date with nutritional science to get testing done prior, then during your transition and also 6-12 months after the complete change as blood tests don’t lie (just be careful in the first 3 months as the markers can go off course as the body is adjusting itself too) which is why I recommend working with a professional and looking at it at 6 months, then 12 and so on.”
What Are The Benefits?
On a Ketogenic diet your insulin (the fat storing hormone) levels drop significantly, which turns your body into a fat-burning beast. Studies have shown the Ketogenic diet provides better weight-loss results than low-fat and high-carb diets; even in the long term.
Done correctly, a Ketogenic diet also naturally lowers blood-sugar levels due to the type of foods you eat, which makes it great for people with type-two diabetes. This can improve your focus and concentration (once you’ve got through the first few weeks and your body is used to it).
Finally, the Ketogenic diet can be used to treat various medical conditions, having been used since the early 1900’s to treat epilepsy, it can also help reduce cholesterol and blood pressure, insulin resistance and ACNE.
What Are The Risks?
As Jordan Ponder points out: it’s very easy to mistake, “Good fats from farmers that know their meats, and poor-quality fats.” According to him this is crucial because, “Most of the (Keto) theory is grounded in the quality of the food, and unfortunately with contemporary lifestyles being so busy; we just don’t have time to prepare the right foods the right way.”
“Fat is where we store a lot of vitamins, minerals and nutrients, so the quality of the fat that we are eating is really really important.”
Unless you’re a professional athlete like Lebron—surrounded by nutritionists, physicians and trainers who can tailor the diet to meet your specific needs—it’s not easy to get the Keto diet right. Also, Jordan says you shouldn’t trust all of the Keto acolytes, who (in his view) advocate, “Bro science designed off the back of caveman-style body reaction to eating fat and protein, when the lifestyle they had was similar to that of an animal—totally different to what we have now—working for 12-16 hours, sleeping in one long stint and socialising and drinking too much.”
Zoe Bingley backed him up, warning that switching to the Keto diet could cause bad breath, constipation and bloating (due to reduced carbohydrate and fibre intake) and in womenAmenorrhea—the loss of menstrual cycle, “especially if kilojoules/energy intake is drastically cut also.”
What To Eat On A Keto Diet?
Depending on how quickly you want to reach a full on ‘Ketogenic’ state, you will have to adjust the early stages of your diet plan (yes, you need a plan—or you’ll be smashing oreos and pizza two-cravings in).
Essentially: (most) vegetables, nuts, meat and (some) dairy. Don’t eat any refined carbohydrates like bread, pasta and cereals, or starchy foods like potatoes, beans, legumes and fruit. The small exceptions, according to some advocates are avocado, star-fruit, and berries which can be consumed in moderation.
More specifically, here’s what you should eat: meats, leafy greens, above ground (non starchy) vegetables (think: broccoli, cauliflower, etc.), high fat dairy, nuts and seeds, avocado and berries (they get a hall pass because they are low GI) and other fats like coconut oil, standard olive oil salad dressings, etc.
Should You Try It?
From Jordan Ponder it’s a no. Most people, he reckons, would be better advised to make more incremental changes to their diet, aiming to eat the recommended 5 servings of fruit and veg a day and cutting back on junk-food, rather than focussing specifically on reducing their carb intake.
Pete Evans, on the other hand, is a strong advocate. He points out that it’s not necessary to cut out all carbohydrates, and that the main goal of the Keto diet is to remove the most common inflammatory foods to humans, which he says are, “Grains, dairy and legumes”, citing the work of Dr David Perlmutter, Professor Eugene Fine and Dr Jason Fung. However, as with most controversial topics, there are studies to back up both sides of the argument. Whole-grains and legumes have been shown to posses numerous health benefits, and Zoe Bingley argues that any restricted diet detracts from having a healthy relationship with food, may be a detriment to health and places unnecessary limitations on one’s life.
“Carbohydrates are a necessary part of a balanced diet and whilst they aren’t limited entirely when on a Ketogenic diet, the level required to achieve ketosis and to stay in ketosis is well below what the average individual requires for optimal health. This diet can also make socialising and eating out difficult (see video below).”
