Step Inside Gerard Butler's Epic Bohemian Old-World Loft
Step Inside Gerard Butler's Epic Bohemian Old-World Loft

We’ve seen Gerard Butler as a Spartan king, an Egyptian god, a fleet-footed gangster, and a disfigured musical genius, but after seeing the New York City loft he just put on the market, we suspect he’d also make a perfect vampire.

Located in the trendy Chelsea neighbourhood, the 3,150 square foot duplex looks straight out of a goth teen’s dreams. Minimalism be damned – Butler cares not for your cosy Scandinavian interiors or starkly modern spaces. He’s all about drama with a capital D, or as he once described it to Architectural Digest, “bohemian old-world rustic…with a taste of baroque.”

The two bedroom, two bathroom loft makes its home in a converted manufacturing warehouse given new life by famed architect Alexander Gorlin. Production designer Elvis Restaino stepped in to craft the loft’s aesthetic, devoting years to honing a highly-customised “modern vintage” motif that combines old architectural features with modern movie-type construction.

The apartment’s numerous unique features include 13-foot mahogany doors, columns sporting limestone lions, crystal chandeliers, plaster walls “chipped and mottled with age,” and a ceiling fresco depicting the rape of Ganymede. Butler calls the style “something elegant and gorgeous and at the same time rather masculine and raw.”

The loft’s (slightly) more normal features include an office, a laundry room, and a “templelike” home cinema outfitted with a pair of Indian columns, a wooden piece from a cathedral in the Bronx, and a stone lion’s head from an old library. Other highlights include a sweeping outdoor terrace and an immense wood-and-iron dining table that looks straight from a medieval castle.

Could anyone but a movie star pull off a space so OTT? Butler will soon find out. The apartment is listed for $5.995 million and looking for a buyer with a serious flair for the dramatic.

McLaren Senna Polarises The World With Controversial Hypercar Design
McLaren Senna Polarises The World With Controversial Hypercar Design

McLaren’s latest hypercar broke cover today and it has already put the motoring world in a spin with its highly controversial design which trades up the alluring lines of traditional performance cars for pure aerodynamic efficiency.

That’s a given since the McLaren Senna was conceived as the British marque’s most track-focused road car to date with one simple goal: Insanely fast lap times.

The naming convention for this special vehicle ditches McLaren’s numeric code for a more a more heritage-inspired moniker in the late McLaren F1 driver, Ayrton Senna.

On the technical front everything has been honed and refined to serve the driver. There’s appointments like RaceActive Chassis Control II hydraulic suspension, an ultra-rigid carbon MonoCage III monocoque and full carbon fibre chassis including the gaping body panels.

Bringing all of the engineering together culminates in McLaren’s tried and tested 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 from the 720S which has been dialled up to deliver 588kW of power and 800Nm of torque.

The car itself tips in the scales at 1,198kg – just 60kg more than the legendary McLaren F1 supercar from the 90s which was considered the benchmark back in the day.

Whilst the new car is undoubtedly functional for its cause, it’s not exactly winning over public perception in the looks department with some people labelling it a disgrace to Senna’s name and others comparing it to the bubble car designed by Homer Simpson.

Nonetheless, McLaren shouldn’t need to worry since all 500 limited run units have already been spoken for with a cool price tag of £750,000 each – about AU$1.3 million a pop.

Let us know your opinion of the new McLaren Senna in the poll below or see how it stacks up against the Nurburgring-slaying Porsche GT2RS or Mercedes-AMG Project One.

Pantone’s 2018 Colour Of The Year Is Out Of This World
Pantone’s 2018 Colour Of The Year Is Out Of This World

The colour experts at Pantone have followed last year’s Greenery with a hue as majestic as it is refreshing, both complex and celestial, reminiscent of a swirling galaxy or a Prince concert. Meet your 2018 Colour of the Year: Ultra Violet.

“We are living in a time that requires inventiveness and imagination,” said Leatrice Eisman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute. “It is this kind of creative inspiration that is indigenous to Pantone 18-3838 Ultra Violet, a blue-based purple that takes our awareness and potential to a higher level.”

Every December, the Pantone Color Institute selects a Colour of the Year based on trend forecasting research. The chosen shade provides strategic direction for designers and brands, but more than that, it has become a symbol of deeper meaning for the year behind and the year ahead.

Pantone has no small hopes for Ultra Violet in 2018.

The company describes the colour as a “dramatically provocative and thoughtful purple shade” that “communicates originality, ingenuity, and visionary thinking that points us toward the future.”

From there, it only gets more insane. Some of OTT things Pantone says about Ultra Violet include:

  • “Ultra Violet symbolizes experimentation and non-conformity, spurring individuals to imagine their unique mark on the world, and push boundaries through creative outlets.”
  • “Ultra Violet suggests the mysteries of the cosmos, the intrigue of what lies ahead, and the discoveries beyond where we are now.”
  • “The selection of Ultra Violet speaks to our shared desire for deeper understanding in an increasingly complex landscape, and our eagerness to experiment to reach that level.”
  • “Ultra Violet lights the way to what is yet to come.”

So… no pressure or anything, Ultra Violet. It’s just the fate of the entire world resting on your imaginary shoulders.

What’s interesting about this choice, The New York Times notes, is that it seems to deviate from previous years by looking forward rather than reflecting.

“It’s also the most complex of all colors,” said Eisman, “because it takes two shades that are seemingly diametrically opposed — blue and red — and brings them together to create something new.”

Laurie Pressman, vice president of the Pantone Color Institute, added that the 2018 Colour of the Year is “truly a reflection of what’s needed in our world today,”

In other words, Ultra Violet is optimistic. It’s a hope for the future, not just an observation. Pantone is getting proactive.

A little ambitious, perhaps, but who are we to scoff at some positivity after the chaos of 2017? If you’d like to inject those hopeful Ultra Violet vibes into your life, check out the products in the gallery above.

Hackers Just Stole $77M Worth Of Bitcoin In A Professional Heist
Hackers Just Stole $77M Worth Of Bitcoin In A Professional Heist

It was bound to happen and it did so in the most spectacular fashion with a “highly professional” heist taking US$77 million worth of bitcoin from a single company overnight.

$15B worth of bitcoins have been stolen to date

The latest theft once again places a serious spotlight over the cryptocurrency’s security measures as Slovenian website NiceHash reels from this incident led by professional hackers, according to Reuters.

The company specialises in mining bitcoins for its customers and according to the Chicago Tribune,  roughly 4,700 bitcoins were stolen from a wallet address used by NiceHash users. With the internet thieves still at large and close to zero leads, the company has announced that it will shut down operations for 24 hours as it investigates exactly how many bitcoins have gone missing.

Back in September, security firm FireEye noted that there were signs North Korean hackers were targeting South Korean cryptocurrency exchanges. This move isn’t exclusive just within Korea though with the rising value of the currency attracting highly skilled digital criminals from all over the world.

“The incident has been reported to the relevant authorities and law enforcement and we are cooperating with them as a matter of urgency,” NiceHash said in an official statement. The company also advised its users to change their passwords in light of this development.

To understand the lucrative nature of bitcoin, one simply needs to look at its value which has grown exponentially in 2017. As of the 8th of December, one bitcoin is valued at $23,350. For reference, one bitcoin was worth roughly $1,000 at the beginning of the year.

This skyrocketing valuation that shows no signs of slowing down has already birthed the first bitcoin billionaire with the Winklevoss twins earning that title earlier this week.

Could Live Bacteria Ink Be The Future Of Tattoos?
Could Live Bacteria Ink Be The Future Of Tattoos?

If you consider your tattoo your pride and joy then the future of ink will literally be your friend (or freak the hell out of you). Engineers from MIT have just devised the world’s first ‘living tattoo’ using a 3D printing technique.

I’ll take one bacteria sleeve thanks

The brains from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology accomplished this task by utilising a new form of ink which is made entirely of genetically programmed living bacteria cells.

These cells have been programmed to light up in response to a variety of stimuli and when they’re mixed with hydrogel and other nutrients, they form an ink structure which can be printed layer by layer, much like the conventional 3D printers of today – except this one’s alive.

The first example of this living tattoo can be seen in the image above where the team printed a live bacteria tattoo in the shape of a tree onto a transparent patch bonded to human skin. Each of these branches consist of a specific cell which is sensitive to different chemical or molecular compounds.

In other words, when the patch is adhered to the skin that has been exposed to the specific compound, that section of the tree will light up in response, creating a motif that changes depending on what it’s exposed to. Animated tattoos, anyone?

“We found this new ink formula works very well and can print at a high resolution of about 30 micrometres per feature”

The ground-breaking research was headed by Xuanhe Zhao, the Noyce Career Development Professor in MIT’s Department of Mechanical Engineering, and Timothy Lu, associate professor of biological engineering and of electrical engineering and computer science. Whilst the research isn’t specifically targeted at body ink, the pair say that the invention can also be used to fabricate “active” materials for wearable sensors and interactive displays.

“We found this new ink formula works very well and can print at a high resolution of about 30 micrometres per feature,” Zhao says. “That means each line we print contains only a few cells. We can also print relatively large-scale structures, measuring several centimetres.”

On a more pragmatic front, the ink can be bonded with common materials and used to detect environmental chemicals and pollutants as well as changes in pH or temperature.

Hyunwoo Yuk who is a co-author of the study added that the technology could bring forth the printing of living computers – “structures with multiple types of cells that communicate with each other, passing signals back and forth, much like transistors on a microchip,” the study explained.

“This is very future work, but we expect to be able to print living computational platforms that could be wearable,” Yuk adds.

To understand exactly how this complex technology works, watch the video below.
