If You’re Going To Follow One Style Icon In 2019, Make It This 73 Year Old Streetwear Kingpin

We all like to think we’re fashionable. Ahead of the curve. Stylish. But when it comes to bringing some spice to your morning commute you’d have to get up damn early to beat Alojz Abram — otherwise known as ‘streetwear gramps’.

The German senior citizen, whose taste for streetwear appears to have grown insatiably, has been papped over the last 3 years by his grandson Jannick, a 22-year-old Mainz photographer, who wished to document his grandpa’s evolving style.

The first post Alojz appears in is in January 2017, rocking a Thrasher hoodie and Jared Leto-esque man-bag.

“I recently found out about my grandfather’s inner hypebeast. So I took him out for a quick shoot and was pretty happy about the outcome.”

Things snowballed from there, with Jannick telling Complex Magazine, “The first ones were kind of awkward to do because he’s never really stood in front of a camera and modelled. But now he does it like it’s his job.”

Since then the duo have mastered the art of finding clothes (and backgrounds) that pop — from Brooklyn-esque bridges…

Qantas’ New Route Set To Bring Michigan’s Great Lakes 4 Hours ‘Closer’ To Australia
Qantas’ New Route Set To Bring Michigan’s Great Lakes 4 Hours ‘Closer’ To Australia

Qantas is set to launch direct flights from Brisbane to Chicago. Not only will this provide Queensland with a major tourism boost, but it also gives savvy Australian travellers unprecedented access to USA ‘cowboy country’, with destinations like Michigan and Wyoming sitting just only a short domestic flight from Chicago’s O’Hare hub — one of the busiest airports in the world.

Seats are reportedly set to go on sale in the next few weeks, and flights are to begin in early 2020, flown by Qantas’ Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft. As reported by The Mail Online, this means that Queensland will likely receive more than 360,000 US visitors a year by 2027.

But one of the implications for adventurous Australian travellers has so far been overlooked. Not only will passengers on the Brisbane-Chicago route be able to avoid the most dreaded US airport — LAX — but it will drop passengers at the gateway to some of the most stunning destinations in the region, especially the vast expanse of the American Midwest.

From Ohio to The Great Lakes, many off-beat destinations are just a short hop from Chicago (Michigan, which gives you one point of access to The Great Lakes, for example, is just a 3 hour 20-minute flight).

Qantas says the Brisbane to Chicago flight will take approximately 16 hours 20 minutes, which means that you could find yourself at The Great Lakes and its stunning views just 20-24 hours after leaving Australia.

Previously you would have had to fly Brisbane to LAX (anything between 15-17 hours), then LAX to Chicago (3-5 hours, depending on who you fly with) and then Chicago to The Great Lakes (3 hours 20 minutes) — which, depending on your layover time, could add up to be a 30 plus hour trip.

And the Great Lakes is just one example — the Brisbane-Chicago route will connect Australians to about 143 destinations, thanks to the 500 flights a day that American Airlines operates out of Chicago.

While the deal is “tentatively” confirmed, Qantas CEO Alan Joyce is waiting on the full approval from the US Department of Transportation.

That aside, unlike Project Sunrise, which still requires the negotiation of a new pilot pay deal, aviation safety regulator approval and an updated aircraft manufacturer deal, Qantas told us this Brisbane to Chicago (and Brisbane to San Francisco) routes are ready to go.

“The new routes we announced today from Brisbane to Chicago and San Francisco are not part of Project Sunrise and can be achieved with our current arrangements as both are shorter than our current Perth-London service.”

The Truth About Why Surfers Try So Hard To Look Cool
The Truth About Why Surfers Try So Hard To Look Cool

A Pulitzer prize winner once called surfers “sunburnt pagans”. Any atheist who has ever prayed to ‘Huey’ (the ubiquitous wave god) knows why. But while surf journalists write about “f*ckoff vindication” and being “privy to mystery” the rest of us deal a little more quietly with our nose drips, sitting on the bus and wondering what other sport lets you cheat death before work.‘Only a kook shows the feeling.’Whether its Craig Anderson’s illustrious nails, Mikey February’s buttery lines, Mikki Dora’s scowl, Alex Knost’s soul arches or John John’s “no claim claims” — trying to look cool is a big part of surfing. We recently bounced around Margaret River in a Jeep Wrangler with current world #5 Jordy Smith, and took the chance to ask him why surfers are so obsessed with nonchalance. However, despite being part of the world’s most elite group of surfers, Jordy possessed none of the lazily-veiled superiority that someone as “privy to mystery” (and more crooks of coastline than you can throw a compass at) might be expected to display.Though Jordy admitted surfers — himself included — are a “pretty unique breed” when it comes to protecting their secret spots —  in terms of attitude he is not one to take himself too seriously or hide his emotions. However, that doesn’t mean Jordy completely dismisses surfing’s lust for ‘style’. To the contrary — trying to be cooler than you really are, he told us, can be a crucial tool for improvement.“I remember getting a board off Andy Irons and Joel Parkinson when I was around 16 or 17 years old; you kind of you paddle out and decide to surf how they surf. You try to start mimicking their style — or barrel ride like them — and that’s a driving force and an inspiration.”

“When you’re trying to surf like other people… style plays such a big part… For me it was Joel Parkinson — I thought he had the most amazing style when I was growing up.”

“I had something in common,” Jordy adds, “Because he had won Jefferey’s Bay at 18 or 19 and I entered it at 17 or 18 and thought, ‘This is crazy — I might do the same thing.'”

“I ended up losing to Taj in the semis but it was at that moment that I thought, ‘Hey I can really cut it with the best in the world here.'”

While few individuals will ever reach that point, if you are looking for a way to break through your ‘surf dysmorphia’ and surf a bit more like your idols, Jordy told us the best advice is to just “keep grinding away at it.”

“I’m still grinding away at it today and thats never changed from the very first day.”

“A lot of people just look at the big picture… but they don’t realise I’m still in the same shoes that I was when I first started. To get better every single day — that’s your goal and that never changes until the day you stop.”“People think you get to a certain level and all of a sudden it becomes easy — but it doesn’t. You’re still in that same position as when you first started. Surfing never ends; the waves are never the same and you’re always trying to get better.”

“It’s a blessing and a curse because you can never master it.”

So if you have a frustrating session next weekend — just remember that your ‘performance dysmorphia’ is part of surfing’s original sin charm. And next time your non-surfing partner questions your ‘dishevelled chic’ look — just tell them it’s all part of your masterplan to turn pro.

Cool Men’s Jewellery Brands That Will Stop You From Looking Like A Blinged Up Pirate
Cool Men’s Jewellery Brands That Will Stop You From Looking Like A Blinged Up Pirate

For centuries, men’s jewellery brands have been confined to two items: a watch and a wedding ring. However, those days are long gone. In recent years, men have started to explore wearing other jewellery including rings, necklaces, bracelets and earrings.

There are myriad different men’s jewellery brands out there and the most important aspect to consider when jewellery shopping, is what you’re buying and what it’ll tell others about you. As with all men’s accessories, jewellery is a reflection of who you are as a person, your lifestyle, tastes, and even income. So, it’s worthwhile looking at various brands, styles, and materials to ensure the jewellery you end up purchasing reflects you in the right way.

Another important aspect to cover is that of quality. Since men’s jewellery is often quite delicate, this is especially important. Not only will better quality items last longer, but they are also better for you as poor quality metals can cause nasty skin conditions if not properly cared for.

Men’s Jewellery Brands FAQs

What jewellery can a man wear?

Men can wear bracelets, cuffs, rings and necklaces or pendants. Be sure to not mix different colours, such as silver and rose gold, but instead, stick to one metal colour throughout.

What colour jewellery is best for a man?

There's no right or wrong answer to this, as it comes down entirely to personal preference. The two most common metal options available to men are sterling silver and gold, and both can look good in either casual or formal environments. Some men's jewellery can be found in rose gold, but this can be a harder colour to pull off. If you get rose gold jewellery, start off with a piece that incorporates it with silver too, before making the jump to a full rose gold piece.

Retired Stockbroker Reveals The Secret To Minimising Your Tax…Legally

This story was originally published on StockheadAs we head towards June 30, a bit of housekeeping skills can be used to clean up the old portfolio and get it positioned nicely as we approach the new financial year and all the riches it can (or is meant to) bring. You have to detach yourself a bit from your mindset and look at this time of year as just a business. Leave any emotional attachment to any shares at the door whilst you go through this process.A good start to get you fired up is to watch what Kerry Packer said in 1991 about paying tax:So, when you are ready for action, grit the teeth and take the hit appropriately, no matter how brutal, before June 30.You can:

  • Sell any share outright to crystallise a loss
  • Sell any share outright to crystallise a loss but then buy them back the next day (known as Bed and Breakfast)
  • Then take enough profits to match any crystallised losses
  • Calculate your potential liability and plan to have the cash to cover it off. Even hold off profit taking on overweight positions until after June 30, if need be

Many a time I have seen clients stubbornly hang on to a position too long, just so they can claim their 12-month CGT discount bonus but end up with The Prince that turns back into a Frog, just as the tax bill arrives. Think Big Un!Also note that, tax year end selling can produce many oversold positions in already underperforming shares and that by about mid-July, they tend to have recovered from the year end bashing.Suspended stocks can be transferred off market, to crystallise a loss. Real dog stocks can be shuffled on via services like deListed offer, even if the ATO has not officially declared a company yet dead. These are all some of the basic observations I have noted over the years, though I would consult with your accountant first, just to make sure that everything you do is legitimate and above board.Oh, and before I forget, I mentioned last week on how the hedge funds got around the GFC rules that banned the shorting of bank shares in 2008.They sold 1000s of futures contracts and then promptly brought back every share that made up the contracts except for – and you guessed it – any banking shares, thus leaving them legitimately short!A politician will never outsmart a trader.Happy housekeeping,TSB.Stockhead covers emerging ASX companies and investment opportunities. Truth About Bad Fats & What They Do To Your Body, According To A Nutrition Coach
Truth About Bad Fats & What They Do To Your Body, According To A Nutrition Coach

We’ve all heard the saying that you need some fat in your diet whilst simultaneously being told that fat causes health issues that can lead to an early grave. It’s enough contradiction to conjure nightmares of the chicken vs. the egg for some, but there’s a simple answer.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Max Lugavere (@maxlugavere) on

“Nature doesn’t make unhealthy fats, humans do,” says nutrition coach Max Lugavere. In his latest Instagram analysis, the NYT best-seller author of Genius Foods explains that the definition of a good fat involves:

  • Chemical stability
  • Minimal processing
  • The presence of beneficial compounds other than fat

Examples of these good fat foods are often found int he supermarket. Think extra-virgin olive oil, avocado oil, avocados, the fat in fatty fish (wild salmon, sardines, mackerel), grass-fed beef, omega-3 or pasture raised eggs, coconut oil and MCT oil (supplement often added to smoothies, bulletproof coffee and salad dressings).

On the other side of the coin we have the bad fats. The common properties of bad fats are:

  • Chemical instability
  • Trans fats
  • Skewed omega-6 to omega-3 ratios
  • Heat and chemical extraction
  • Refining
  • Bleaching
  • Deodorisation

Foods that contain bad fats are also commonplace and they’re usually used to prepare the foods we indulge in most. Bad fats come in the form of canola oil, grapeseed oil, corn oil, soy oil, vegetable oil, sunflower oil, safflower oil, rapeseed oil and commercial salad dressings.

Lugavere says that these fats are all highly processed and all contain significant levels of trans fats (up to 5%). He references a Havard study on canola oil by Dr. Guy Crosby which explains that “canola oil does contain very low levels of trans-fat, as do all oils that have been deodorised. Deodorization is the final step in refining ALL vegetable oils.”

The most important point to take away from this is that the dosage of bad fats makes all the difference. In micro quantities which is measured, bad fat fat consumption is safe. “But unfortunately when it comes to cooking and packaged foods, the quantities in question are macro, not micro,” says Lugavere.

The effects of trans fat consumption has been linked to early death and more interestingly, memory loss. In an American health study from 2015, it was found that  on average, men aged 45 and younger recalled 86 words. For each additional gram of trans fats consumed daily, performance dropped by 0.76 words.

Most Affordable Men’s Sunglasses That Will Protect Your Eyes In Style For Under $150
Most Affordable Men’s Sunglasses That Will Protect Your Eyes In Style For Under $150

There was a time when sunglasses were purely a functional affair designed to protect your eyes from the sun’s glare. Well, that time has passed and these days it’s about merging function with personal style. That’s easier said than done considering there are quite a few factors to consider when buying a pair of the best cheap sunglasses for men.

Choosing The Right Cheap Sunglasses For Your Face

There’s nothing worse than dropping your hard-earned cash on a pair of sunglasses online only to realise that they don’t fit. But fear not, there are ways around this problem. Measuring the dimensions of your face will help you get an idea of its size and shape for the right sunglass fitment. Note down the following numbers:

  • Cheekbone to cheekbone. Place the end of a tape measure just below your eye. This is the top of your cheekbone. Measure to the same point on the other side of your face.
  • Jaw line. Locate the ends of your jawbone below your ears. Measure from one side to the other, around the bottom of your face.
  • Face length. Measure a straight line from the centre of your hairline, down over the front of your nose, to the bottom of your chin.
  • Forehead width. Place the tape measure halfway between your eyebrows and hair. Measure the width of your forehead from one side of your hairline to the other.

Compare your measurements and use them to calculate your face shape.

Determining Your Face Shape

Knowing your face shape will bring you one step closer to picking the right sunglasses.

  • Round. Round faces are characterised by a narrow forehead and curved jaw line. Defined angles are in short supply.
  • Square. Square faces are similar in length and width across the face, with a broad forehead and a strong jaw line.
  • Oval. Oval faces have gently rounded, largely even features, making them well-suited to almost any kind of adornment.
  • Oblong. Oblong faces, also called rectangular, are long and narrow with minimal angles.
  • Diamond. Diamond faces feature a narrow jawline and defined chin. The dominant cheekbones are the widest part of the face.
  • Heart. Heart-shaped faces, sometimes called triangle, narrow strongly at the chin and are widest at the temples.

Pairing Your Face Shape With The Right Cheap Sunglasses

  • Round. A round face lacks natural definition, so look for sunglasses that add it. Angular styles will help elongate your temples and lengthen your face. Steer clear of round frames that mimic your face shape.
  • Square. Strong natural features call for larger frames and minimal detailing that won’t compete for attention. Aviators are a good choice.
  • Oval. The oval is considered the holy grail of face shapes. Almost anything will suit, just keep proportion in mind. Any frames will look off if they’re too large or too small for your face.
  • Oblong. Choose round or square frames to offset the long, narrow line from forehead to chin. Stick to frames that don’t extend past the widest part of your face.
  • Diamond. Accentuate your prominent cheekbones by choosing deep frames that are more vertical than horizontal. A hint of cat-eye will be flattering to your face’s natural angles.
  • Heart. Avoid sunglasses that sit high on the face and accentuate your broad brow line. Retro, rectangular styles balance your pointed chin.

Cheap Sunglasses FAQ

What shade color is best for sunglasses?

Some colors like grey, amber and green block more sun, making them useful for athletes who play baseball and golf. But if you want something that can cut off the glare coming off reflective surfaces like pavement or water, get a polarized lens.

Are bigger sunglasses better?

If your glasses have more coverage, the less sun damage that will be inflicted on your eyes. For this reason, oversized or wraparound-style glasses are better.

How to choose the right sunglasses?

Find a pair that complements the shape of your face. The general rule is that the shape of your sunglasses should be the opposite of your face shape. Also, invest in a pair with a classic shape so you can wear them for many years.

Chris Hemsworth Shows You How To Rock The Perfect Suit Without A Dress Shirt

You can trust an Australian to turn any formal look into a cool and casual affair. Chris Hemsworth managed to do just that overnight when he strolled around New York in nothing but a finely tailored deep red suit with black detailing paired to a white tee with slick mahogany dress shoes. The Thor actor has never been a huge fan of suiting up so this pared back look has been a bit of a signature style of Hemsworth. What we’re noticing though is a bit more experimentation of the fabric patterning to bring a bit more polish to the otherwise understated combo.Just a day prior the actor was spotted in the same suit and white t-shirt combo but this time in blue check by Etro with black dress shoes. It’s a reliable pairing without much effort or rules required other than the fit of the suit and the fit of the t-shirt (keep it slim, no baggy tees). Another pointer to tale from this is combination is that by simply tucking in the t-shirt, the look takes on a far more formal and sharper look. It doesn’t look like Hemsworth is a tucker himself but you can still nail it with our guide on how to tuck your t-shirt. So there you have it. No dress shirt, no tie, no pocket square. Just a good old fashioned smart casual affair. And you have L.A based stylist Samantha McMillen to thank for that.

You can check out more of the looks she’s been responsible for on Hemsworth on her Instagram above.
