When you think historic car museums of the world, South Africa isn’t exactly the first place that comes to mind. That’s the beauty of the Franschhoek Motor Museum in Cape Town. It’s truly a hidden gem amongst the world’s flashier car exhibitions and it stands the test of time on its own.The Franschhoek Motor Museum does this by drawing upon its exclusive private collection of cars which pay homage to over 100 years of rich motoring history. And that’s only the half of it. The rare cars get rotated regularly in order to keep things fresh and exciting for unassuming patrons.Inside the de-humidified 2,700m² space, guests are greeted with an assortment of exciting vehicles, motorcycles, bicycles and memorabilia in the magnificent setting of L’Ormarins. The collection focuses on specific categories including Antique (built before 31 December 1904), Veteran (built between 1 January 1905 and 31 December 1918), Vintage (built between 1 January 1919 and 31 December 1930), Post-Vintage (built between 1 January 1931 and 31 December 1945), Post-45 (built between 1 January 1946 and 31 December 1960) and Post-60 (built after 1 January 1961).As you can probably tell, Franschhoek Motor Museum is all about tracing the evolution of the automobile. Its impressive portfolio is a collection which exceeds 220 vehicles and includes definitive makes such as Nelson Mandella’s 3.5 tonne Armour-plated BMW 7 Series, a 1936 540K Mercedes Benz which was given to the Egyptian King Farouk by Hitler, a Ford Model T and a few Ferraris like the 250 SWB Berlinetta, F40, F50 and Enzo.Given that Franschhoek is renowned as Cape Town’s premiere wine county, we’d gladly add fine cars to that repertoire as well.To find out more, head to Franschhoek Motor Museum.Luc Wiesman was a guest of Rolls-Royce on a recent trip to Cape Town, South Africa

Ever wondered what the headquarters of Sydney’s hospitality giant Merivale looks like? Well, here’s your sneak peek. The corporate heart of Merivale is actually located within the multi-layered Pacha paradise and businessmen haunt that is the Ivy. Merivale’s Sydney HQ is a collaborative effort between architects Woods Bagot and interior designers Hecker Guthrie, resulting in a mid-century aesthetic peppered with a combination of lacquer timbers, luxurious textures, lush greenery and plenty of natural light. In fact, Merivale’s office are available for hire and teeters on the fine line of work and play, encouraging the company’s ethos of an extended working family, where having a good time is not always secondary to providing one. With a champagne bar ending a polite row of open plan office spaces, the Merivale Group clearly believes in having a good time at work.As the brains behind major Sydney hotspots like Establishment, The Beresford, El Loco, Ms. G’s and Coogee Pavilion it’s no wonder Justin Hemmes and the team at Merivale have spared no expense on their headquarters.

As Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Tokyo got underway last month, street-style photographers flocked to the Japanese capital to document the latest fashion trends worn by the city’s most stylish men. Just like the Milanese embody Italian tailoring, the Japanese have truly mastered the art of street wear.Deciphering the craziness can be difficult in Tokyo. Looks ranged from crisp, tailored and minimalist to bold and experimental, with outsize proportions and deconstructed elements. But among the eclectic and the electric, we’ve picked out the key themes and items worth considering this season, to embody local Tokyo style and to bolster your street style credentials.First up, click through the gallery for 50 ways to dress like a Tokyo local. Then, read our breakdown of key aesthetics and fashion items, for getting that Tokyo drift.
Key Fashion Trends From Tokyo:
#1 Light, Bright Outerwear
Let’s talk coats. Despite the coolish temperatures, men sport casual outerwear hybrids – macs, trench coats, and shirt jackets in lightweight cottons and/or weather-resistant nylon fabrics. Off-beat colours – vermillion, tangerine and acid green, add to the jacket craze, mixed with Friesian cow patterns and trompe-l’œil prints – the art of making an image look 3-D.
#2 Oversized Blazers
An oversized black suit jacket is sartorial sacrilege. But the Japanese make it work, come streetwear. Slim chinos team with a boxy suit jacket feels easy; the casual rendition of the office attire accentuated by crisp white shirting, tie and clip too, worn untucked over business shoes and socks.Longline notch lapel jackets, with a tee and skinny black jeans, get the rock treatment, sleeves pushed up the arms for a rebellious feel over Cuban-heel Chelsea boots. And the dinner jacket, again longline, turns top coat over a longline plaid shirt, full-piece leather boats and waxed-black skinnys.
#3 Relaxed Military
The military cap or bonnet (or even a dishevelled beret in some cases), crowns the street looks of many Tokyo men. The off-kilter cap nods to neo-militant accents with relaxed top coats of gregarious lengths. This, teamed with oversized, woollen trousers and military boots caps-off the vintage army officer. Or distressed skinny jeans for a punkish dialect.Tailoring isn’t exempt from the military conscription, incorporating suits and a more street-chic aesthetic via cable-knit roll necks. The final accessory trend? Round-lensed metal wire frames for a très français element that adds an artistic element.
#3 Health Goth
Yes, Health Goth’s a thing. Basically, it’s an ‘aesthetic’: hi-tech sportswear with a monochrome or sparse palette. It’s also mildly dystopian (end of the world hopelessness) and promotes biotechnology, fetish culture and extreme cleanliness – made up of active materials (neoprene, nylons and polyester), and exotic leathers and expensive cottons. What Health Goth’s not? Gym-clothes for sadists. In Tokyo, sloppy, slouchy tops are the trend, featuring oversized sweaters; some layered with a parka and longline tees. Bottoms consist of drop-crotch jogger pants (tapered at the ankle) or tights underpinning baggy-butt shorts. And space-boot sneakers are the winning Health Goth choice. It’s a unique style, so make sure you have the attitude (and fitness) to pull it off.
#4 Nineties Chic
What a decade the Nineties were. And the Tokyo tribes rep the style with a sophisticated twist. Skater boys wheel along formal Chesterfield coats and ripped, light wash jeans – cut and worn like trousers with a tucked graphic tee and hi-top Chucks.Sneakers – namely Stan Smiths – underpin monochrome layered looks: a satiny parka, elasticated trousers and woollen sweater, neatly thrown together under a keep-it-chilled beanie. Fans of MJ should note the working of white socks and black lace-ups, something that requires fashion-y touches to pull off: cropped trousers, relaxed shirting layers and a loose-fit bomber. And a whole lot of confidence. Not sure? Leave this look to the Japanese, too.
#5 Better In Leather
While there are many casual jacket-tailored trouser combinations in Tokyo, the leather jacket is the most prolific. Kept dark and oily, the moto jacket of choice is crafted with suede inlays and decorative, metallic hardware for an authentic version of the racer leather. The texture lifts a typically monochrome outfit; elevating the smart with some help from cropped cotton trousers (some with chalk stripe) or pleated trousers, as well as dress shoes – tassel loafers, open sandals or derby boots, depending on the weather.#6 Sartorially Black
Black really is the chic-est colour. But when tailored pieces – jackets, trousers, top coats, dress shoes – are worn in monochrome unity, the locals know that all that ‘shade’ needs some ‘light’ (to avoid like a gaping black hole). Softness comes via round tailoring; relax-shouldered blazers and overcoats over wide-leg trousers with slouch front pleats and cropped hems.Stiff-collared, slim fit shirts are replaced by plush-fabricated knitwear (roll necks to boat necks) and lighter materials (linen, wool, silk) creating a billow of the pants and undershirts, adding depth and movement to the all-black. The final ‘light’ trick? Add a white sneaker, patterned scarf, or block-coloured sweater, messing with the total darkness.

The Petersen Automotive Museum located in the heart of Los Angeles is a sprawling multi-level campus for iconic cars and their mission is to change this dated perspective. On our recent trip to the City of Angels, we dropped by the revamped space and chatted to A.J. Gordon who looks after marketing at the museum to find out what’s so special about this particular exhibition space for cars.
Beyond The Bonnet
It’s odd to even call Petersen Automotive Museum a museum as what we found was something so far removed from that age-old term that it’s not even funny. Sure there are over 300 cars on display but it’s the way in which they’re all displayed that makes them special.
Gone are the giant dioramas which used to litter the museum back in 1994 and in its place now is striking design and immersive technology built around the cars to showcase the significance and meaning behind every set of wheels.
The museum is set up in a way to educate guests over three floors: History, Industry and Artistry.
“Instead of dividing the cars up by era, we divided it by the five sections of why people like cars: style, innovation, freedom, utility or distinction,” explains A.J.
“It’s about breaking museum rules and it’s taken three and a half years as a process from concept to now.”
The benefits of setting up a car museum this way allows for a greater scope of updates which in turn keeps the exhibition space fresh and exciting for visitors. Given that the space sees on average 1,000 visitors per day, this is a must.
Curation is another intriguing area of the Petersen Automotive Museum. Some of these cars are priceless pieces that date back to the early 1900s with no other example in the world. Gordon says that in order for them to solve this logistical challenge, the museum is set up as a non-profit entity which includes a board of directors and a combination of privately funded, loaned and donated machines.
“We first come up with an idea for our galleries. Be it dream cars of history or of the future, our curatorial department will make a list of how many cars we need and what are the greatest examples in the world of those vehicles,” explains Gordon.
“After this they find those cars, bring it in on a loan, or if it’s a car from our permanent collection, we use those.”
One-third of Petersen’s cars are acquired from their own permanent collections whilst two-thirds are on loan from private museums or manufacturers factories. Besides the cars, guests are treated to over 150 screens and projectors and an endless array of immersive technology to help them learn about these cars.
Think augmented reality iPads where users can grab one, walk around the museum and be taught about how the car is built and raced whilst the real thing sits pretty in front of you.
There’s even a Made In Italy section which shows of the essence of Italian car making from body to powertrain to interior, all of the different steps it takes to build a car.
Stars Of The Pertersen Automotive Museum
By now you’re probably a bit more educated on the concept behind this wild excuse of a museum. Well now it’s time to salivate as the kind of vehicles you’ll find at Petersen Automotive Museum are nothing short of spectacular.
They have a hypercar section which is dedicated to road-legal race cars such as the Enzo Ferrari, 2017 Ford GT, 1967 GT40 MKIII, McLarens and more.
For the green thumbs, you’ll be surprised to know that there’s an alternate fuel category which showcases cars such as the first petrol-electric hybrid to ever be built in 1914 out of Canada.
If you’re after something more modern, there’s also hydrogen fuel cell cars on display as well as 1039 Fiat which ran on compressed natural gas. It was basically a rolling bomb.
Other cool finds you’ll run into at the Petersen museum is Hollywood heavy hitters like Steve McQueen’s iconic Jaguar XKSS and Bond’s Aston Martin DB5 from Goldfinger complete with hidden missile headlights and all the bells and whistles.
Welcome to the vintage car museum of the future, L.A style.

It’s no secret that the dive watch is one of those classic pieces every magnificent bastard should own. Its versatility and ruggedness make it the go-to watch in anyone’s wardrobe, and it is these very virtues that make it an enduring symbol of timelessness.
The development of modern diving is inseparable from the development of modern dive watches, and diving presents a unique challenge for watchmakers. Divers need to be able to record how long they’ve been underwater – and they need a watch that’s strong enough to withstand the high pressures the depths inflict on a timepiece.
Dive watches typically feature high water resistance ratings – typically over 200m – as well as dive-specific features such as timing bezels, helium release valves and a generous amount of luminescence (‘lume’).
Of course, dive watches have long since transcended their aquatic origins and are simply one of the most popular categories of watches. Most dive watch owners never dive with their watches – but it’s good to know that you could if you wanted to, right?
When you say “dive watch”, you might find that the first timepieces that come to mind might be the Rolex Submariner or the OMEGA Seamaster, but today, we are going to show you some fine-ass diving watches that may have slipped through your radar, and are definitely worth a second glance.
In this best dive watches article…
Longines Legend Diver

A faithful interpretation of a dive watch originally produced by Longines in the 1960s, the Longines Legend Diver is a re-edition that is accurate even to the size of the case. With a 42mm case diameter, the watch pays tribute to both past and present with a vintage-style dial and forward-thinking sizing.
The most distinctive feature of the watch is its double crown – one to operate the time and another to operate the internal rotating ‘compressor’ bezel to time dives. This internal bezel has the advantage of preventing accidental changes to the dive time, as the bezel is located underneath the crystal.
The Legend Diver is available in a wide variety of colours and strap options but we’re particularly big fans of this beige example. The subtle fumé dial and hardy textile strap make this seem like an old-school adventurer’s timepiece.
Retail Price: AU$3,625
Jaeger-LeCoultre Polaris Mariner Memovox

Jaeger-LeCoultre is perhaps best known for its stylish dress watches, such as the classic Reverso or the Master Control, but the storied Swiss manufacture also makes a cracking diver’s watch: the handsome Polaris, which is one of the most underrated diver’s watches on the market.
The Polaris is available in a wide range of case materials and complications, but for our money, the most unique is the Jaeger-LeCoultre Polaris Mariner Memovox with its mechanical alarm.
The 2022 Polaris Mariner Memovox features a new peripheral gong designed to allow for a transparent sapphire case-back while retaining the signature ‘school bell’ sound that lends such charm to Jaeger-LeCoultre’s alarm watches – the chiming still audible even deep underwater. The deep blue dial of the watch is especially tasteful, and befitting of the brand’s stylish character.
Retail Price: AU$27,900
Rado Captain Cook Bronze

The Rado Captain Cook was one of the first modern dive watches and in 2022, it’s having somewhat of a resurgence thanks to its cool retro design.
This take on the Captain Cook is novel for two reasons. Firstly, it’s crafted from bronze. Bronze is an interesting choice of material for a dive watch as bronze quickly develops a patina, especially when exposed to saltwater. The idea goes that every bronze watch will patinate differently, meaning your bronze watch is entirely unique. Bronze is also a material that is commonly associated with ocean-going, which makes it particularly appropriate for a dive watch.
Secondly, this Rado Captain Cook Bronze features a burgundy dial and bezel. Red isn’t a very common colour for watches but when combined with bronze we think it looks particularly cool. One thing’s for sure – this is a dive watch that’ll stand out from the pack.
Retail Price: AU$4,150
Seiko Prospex ‘Arnie’ PADI

Seiko makes a wide variety of capable dive watches at many different price points, but we reckon it’s pretty hard to go past the iconic Seiko Prospex ‘Arnie’ – as worn prominently by Arnold Schwarzenegger’s character Dutch in the famous 1987 action film Predator, hence the nickname.
The ‘Arnie’ is a hybrid quartz watch with analog and digital time displays (which you can use for a dual-time readout), a chronograph function, an alarm, and a calendar. Unlike the watch Schwarzenegger wore, this modern version contains a solar-powered movement. How good’s not changing batteries?
It’s also endorsed by PADI, the world’s leading scuba diving training organization, so you know it’s legit. With the Arnie, you’re getting a hell of a lot of watch for the money (we’re not joking – it’s almost 48mm in diameter…)
Retail Price: AU$580
Tudor Pelagos

The Rolex Submariner might be the world’s most famous dive watch but Rolex’s sister brand Tudor also makes some exceptional pieces. At the top of their range sits the Tudor Pelagos: a handsome yet technical dive watch that’s very different from any Rolex ever made.
The Pelago’s main feature is that it’s made out of titanium. Rolex has famously never released a titanium watch, so that’s an immediate point of differentiation. It’s also water-resistant to 500m (more than most dive watches and 200m more than a Submariner) and boasts a bracelet extension system, which allows the Pelagos to be easily slipped over a wetsuit, for example.
Other dive-focused features include a helium release valve at 9 o’clock, a hefty 70-hour power reserve and a date window sans cyclops lens for added sleekness.
Retail Price: AU$6,450
Panerai Submersible QuarantaQuattro Bianco

Panerai is a brand synonymous with dive watches – indeed, it’s basically all they make. The Submersible is their most utilitarian and functional dive watch thanks to its uni-directional rotating bezel with metallic appliques filled with white Super-LumiNova – an indispensable feature for a diving instrument.
It also features Panerai’s locking crown mechanism – a signature of the brand – where a lever-actuated lock integrated into the large semi-circular crown guard keeps the crown from rotating (and therefore compromising the watch’s water-resistance or changing the time).
As the name implies, the Submersible QuarantaQuattro Bianco has a case diameter of 44mm: a real ‘Goldilocks’ size that’s characteristically Panerai (i.e. chunky) without being obnoxiously large. As the name also implies, this one has a white dial. We reckon it’s the pick of the litter.
Retail Price: AU$13,800
TAG Heuer Aquaracer Professional 1000 Superdiver

To round off our list, we thought we’d share a proper deep-sea watch. The TAG Heuer Aquaracer Professional 1000 Superdiver is a no-compromise beast that goes above and beyond most dive watches.
The Superdiver is easily differentiated from other Aquaracers thanks to its 1,000m water resistance, its clever dynamic crown guard, contrasting chapter ring and its chunkier, arrow-tipped hour hand, just to name a few features. It’s ISO 6425:2018 certified, too, which means it’s suitable for saturation diving. You know. If you ever wanted to.
Despite all this – and its 45mm case size – it’s actually a deceptively wearable watch. Many hardcore dive watches are unwieldy things, but you could actually get away with wearing the Superdiver casually.
Retail Price: AU$9,650

A gentleman’s bedroom, boudoir, or man cave, is a place of great sanctuary, a little slice of you, your spot to escape reality whether it be for rest, pleasure or work. However, the behaviours and decorative elements that may come naturally to you in your personal pad, may come across slightly differently to the ladies and lovers that are invited inside. Here’s the good, the bad, and the ugly of what women really think of your bedroom.
#1 Photos
You’ve succeeded in getting a lucky lady into your bedroom and without realising, she’s doing some light snooping around. Where does she look first? The photo frames. If you’ve been clever, all she will she see are happy snaps of you with your friends and family, consequently warming her heart and also indicating to her that you are, in fact, a normal human being. If you’ve been a little lazy, though, she might come across the heart-shaped frame of you and your ex. Don’t let this happen. Review your photographic evidence every once in awhile, just to make sure it’s the best reflection of yourself.
#2 Grooming Products
Ladies love a man who takes pride in his looks. If on first inspection of your bedroom, said lady spots a comb, hair product and deodorant, gold star for you. This means you do care about what you look like when you leave the house and removes possible ‘grub factor’ from her mind. However, there are some products that are best left in closed drawers. For instance, a large bottle of hand lotion next to a box of tissues probably won’t go down very well. Be selective with grooming products, and placement within your bedroom.
#3 Nightstand
The mystery of a man’s nightstand has long captured the curiosity of women around the world, usually with the poignant question: what do they keep in that thing? Now, a locked nightstand, while appropriate for privacy measures, can give off the idea that you have something to hide. Unlocked, however, and open to the world, suddenly your private life has become public. To avoid any and all of the above, it’s simple. Don’t put anything in, or on your nightstand that could come across questionably. Book, lamp, old headphones and sunglasses from yesteryear, all acceptable.
#4 Laundry
It may come as no surprise that an overflowing laundry basket, a pile of dirty clothes and the odd pair of boxers who have lost their way to the undie drawer, aren’t exactly aphrodisiacs for the women in your life. Firstly, it’s an eyesore to what could be a more inviting room, plus catching a glimpse of your sweat-stained gym gear in the harsh morning light just makes that walk of shame harder. Secondly, it makes you seem lazy. Invest in the quick trip to the laundry and get it sorted. Clean clothes, clear conscience.
#5 Wardrobe
Your wardrobe can say a lot about you as a prospective partner. Lack thereof, in the form of a dodgy clothes rack, or worse an unpacked suitcase and you’ll appear uncommitted. Too much emphasis on the wardrobe, and you’ll seem maybe a little self-indulged. One wardrobe, or better, an in-built with drawers means your sneaker collection, suiting and other miscellaneous crap is tucked away in a respectable and admirable manner.
#6 Technology
Again, there is a fine line with technology in a man’s room. Appearing digitally savvy is a turn-on and means you’ll be the first point of call come a computer virus, but too much tech and you’re crossing over into cyber-nerd territory. A laptop, speaker system and iPad is a nice compromise, but multiple monitors, a gaming headset and massive blast-your-eardrums speakers is probably a bit much. Adopt the ‘keep it simple, stupid mantra’ when selecting tech for your bedroom instead.
#7 Mirrors
Don’t get us wrong, mirrors are important in a bedroom. In fact, they might be the only thing stopping you from heading out in any more than your pyjamas and a scruffy beard. However, there’s yet another goldilocks balance with reflective surfaces in any given man cave. Too many mirrors and you’ll seem narcissistic. Not enough, and it will seem like you don’t care about your personal appearance. Also worth mentioning: mirrors above the bed or on the ceiling are a big no-no.
#8 Bed Linen
Your choice in bed linen is extremely important to a) inviting a woman into your man space and b) inviting her into bed. If you’ve let your mum either pick or hand you down bed linen, or you’re still rocking the same bedspread from your teens, it’s time for a change. Plain colours and patterns are preferable, but most importantly, keep it clean and despite what you may have heard, silk and satin sheets aren’t sexy.Moral of the story? Whether you’re in a long-term relationship, or just having a one-off slumber party, keep your bedroom simple and balanced with a little bit of you, and enough room to welcome someone else.

For most, Herschel conjures up images of simple, functional duffel bags and backpacks often donning the backs of hipsters, high school kids and perhaps yourself mid-layover or commute. But these days, Herschel is all about innovation and backpacks that you can repair with just the heat in your fingertip.Hershel designer brothers Lyndon and Jamie Cormack have introduced a fabric called Sealtech, a lightweight ripstop nylon that isn’t just water-resistant, but can reseal small holes. By applying a little body heat via rubbing your fingers over a puncture, the Sealtech will tighten its surrounding material and voila, hole be gone.“We’re constantly looking for innovative fabrics and manufacturing processes to keep us moving forward,” explains Jamie. “We were looking at new materials with unique treatments and different properties when Sealtech fabric was first brought in almost two years ago. This nylon ripstop has the perfect coating combination that not only gives it a soft hand-feel, but it’s also water-resistant and can reseal itself after minor punctures.”If you’ve been particularly heavy-handed with your Herschel, Sealtech won’t be able to work its magic very well, but for only $99-$149 you’ll be thanking yourself when your duffel comes off the airport carousel looking like swiss cheese.

Harry’s was born out of the desire to offer a great shave at a fair price. It started with razors (which we’ll get to a little later), then expanded to other products necessary for the perfect shaving experience. On that list is the Foaming Shave Gel, which is packed with natural ingredients that soothe irritation and hydrate your face.
Shave Tonic by Baxter of California
Take home the unique shaving experience of the LA-based barbershop/retail space Baxter Finley with the revitalising Shave Tonic. Shave Tonic contains natural essential oils – including menthol, rosemary, eucalyptus, camphor and spearmint – alongside aloe extract and vitamins E, D and A to provide skin with moisture and essential nutrients.
Tobacco Vanille Conditioning Beard Oil by Tom Ford
The key to the perfect beard is a serious maintenance routine. Daily grooming and conditioning keeps your scruff looking anything but scruffy. Try Tom Ford’s Tobacco Vanille Conditioning Beard Oil, which softens and nourishes with a blend of almond, jojoba and grapeseed oils. Also available in two other scents: Oud Wood and Neroli Portofino.
Tools Of The Trade
The Truman Razor by Harry’s
Back to Harry’s, as promised. It was razors that started it all for the brand, like the simple and modern Truman. The ergonomic handle is curved for comfort, weighted for substance and angled for precise control, so you end up with something that feels less like a tool and more like an extension of your hand.
Stainless Steel Li+ by Wahl
If you prefer a high-tech shave, we recommend the Stainless Steel Li+ by Wahl. The heavy duty, stainless steel body feels solid in your hand and the four interchangeable heads mean you have plenty of opportunities to nail the perfect trim. Worldwide voltage makes this an especially useful tool if you’re a frequent traveller.
Sonicare Diamond Clean Black Edition by Philips
Yes, it’s a pricey toothbrush, but you won’t regret splurging on something as important as your smile. The Sonicare Diamond Clean Black Edition from Philips promises to remove up to 7x more plaque and whiten teeth more than 2x better than a manual toothbrush, while improving gum health in only 2 weeks. There’s even a 2-minute timer to track the recommended brushing time.
Leather-Bound Manicure Set by Czech & Speake
And last but not least, don’t neglect your claws. Well-kept nails are a must, and Czech & Speake is here to make sure it happens. The Leather-Bound Manicure Set is a one stop shop for handsome hands. Eight tools are included in the kit: slanted tweezers, safety scissors, nail scissors, nail clippers, a nail file, toe nail clippers, a cuticle nipper and a double-ended cuticle tool.
