Rare 1960s Mercedes Benz Is Australia’s Most Expensive Second Hand Car Right Now
Rare 1960s Mercedes Benz Is Australia’s Most Expensive Second Hand Car Right Now

Sydney is beautiful all year round, but it’s in summer when it really shines. Sun in the sky, jacarandas blooming, real estate agents shouting…

There’s no better time and place to own a convertible than Sydney in the summer. But there’s a big difference between getting stuck in traffic on Military Road in a dumpy Volkswagen Eos and cruising down Bondi Beach in something like this – a 1960 Mercedes-Benz drop-top that’s currently the most expensive car listed on Carsales in Australia.

“This fabulous Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster was delivered new on the 27th December 1960 to Erich W. Spitzner of Berlin,” luxury car dealership Classic Throttle Shop explains.

“The car was used sparingly by Erich over the next twenty five years with trips through Europe… in 1985 with Eric getting older and using the car less it was put into specialised dry storage in Berlin, where it remained for the next fourteen years. Erich passed away in 1997 and his wife then reached out in 1999 to Mercedes-Benz specialists HK Engineering in Bavaria for them to collect the car and prepare it for sale.”

It’s strange to think that this lavish convertible was driving the streets of West Berlin while just over the Berlin Wall, East Germans would have counted themselves lucky to get their hands on a Trabant. Hell, in order to go on his pan-Europe road trips, Spitzner would have had to drive out from Berlin, which despite being divided between NATO and Soviet control, was geographically in East Germany.

Imagine Spitzner driving through the road corridor between Berlin and West Germany, passing envious East German farmers and soldiers… Talk about ~excess~.

After flitting between a few owners and HK for the next few years – during which time the car got an engine rebuild and fuel pump overhaul – it made its way Down Under in 2005.

“Purchased in late in 2017 by Classic Throttle Shop founders Rory and Karin Johnston, the 300 SL having been a lifetime goal for Karin, being a Stuttgart girl and having amassed over 400 models of the 300 SL… this truly stunning car is ready for its next custodian.”

“The car has a wonderful history file with all its original books, including its original service book, Becker Mexico radio booklet and certificate, its original factory tool kit and jack as well as its original Mercedes-Benz data card… factory optioned with the super rare and very expensive hard top, polished aluminium wheels (standard ones were steel and painted), Becker Mexico Radio, Hirschmann Electric Aerial…”

“Having owned many great classic cars over the years of trading this 300 SL will always be remembered as being a standout example. It’s fast, it sounds amazing, it looks amazing… it is amazing!”

The Mercedes-Benz 300 SL (chassis code W198, the SL standing for ‘super light’) was produced from 1954 to 1963 as both a roadster and a coupé, the latter of which is famous for its gullwing doors and is widely considered one of the most iconic cars of all time.

The roadster variant isn’t quite as rare or famous – no roof means no cool doors – but it’s still a fantastic car. This one’s a veritable time capsule, totally mint and just raring to hit the great outdoors. Sure, $2.5 million is hardly cheap, but when you’re talking smiles per gallon, we reckon this would be hard to beat.

Check it out on Carsales or see it in person at Classic Throttle Shop’s Milsons Point showroom.

Tennis Star Eugenie Bouchard’s Latest Snap Exposes Woeful State Of Men’s Pickup Game
Tennis Star Eugenie Bouchard’s Latest Snap Exposes Woeful State Of Men’s Pickup Game

Eugenie Bouchard recently posted a “December mood” snap on Instagram. The image? Herself sitting on the beach, with a friend dancing in the background. She then asked in the comments: “You go to the beach and see this, wyd [what do you do]?”

This is nothing new for the 26-year-old Canadian tennis star, who resides in Miami and often offers followers glimpses into her life, and frequently stokes conversation in the comments.

A point of difference, however, is that this photo particularly suggests Instagram’s wittiness per capita (commenter?) has fallen to dreadful lows in 2020. After seeing the number of boring and creepy responses to Bouchard’s question, DMARGE spoke to relationship expert and advisor to Channel 10’s The Bachelor, Samantha Jayne, to ask: what the heck?

But first – here’s a few examples of the comments that rolled in. Some were gross (see: “put a towel over my lap” and “probably hope it’s a nude beach”) and some were weird (see: “cry and sing a lullaby”).

Others were depressingly honest (see: “I would not make visual contact and leave quietly” and “I’d think of something funny to say to get your attention, fail epically, spend the next few years of my life wondering why tf I said that”).

Then, though there were also a couple of half-decent (by comparison) responses (“It’s a Christmas miracle – I’d thank god for the opportunity”) there were also various creepy and threatening comments which don’t deserve airtime.

We asked Jayne why this happens. She said: “It’s funny, human nature. If a person has a tendency to hide behind their true self they are more likely to say horrific and over the top things online. That person clearly has issues with who they are and prefer to hide behind being anonymous. Just like a troll, they say whatever it is they want to hide their true identity because there is no consequence to their actions.”

“Bullies do the same, the find the people they perceive as weak and vulnerable use intimidation tactics to undermine the victim and get what they want however if they were to be faced with someone equal or with more power they cower.”

“Some of the comments could be ‘tongue in cheeky’ jokes, whereas others are serious. What’s important is to be your true self in person and online. Working on your confidence and inner happiness, when you are happy you are kinder to others. Being kind goes a long way.”

Jayne also told us, “Social media allows the two parties who would never cross paths [to] come together,” and that, in her view, Bouchard may have a mutualistic relationship with the commenters on her posts: “They are really just ways to grab attention, start conversations… getting more followers and standing out from the other everyday posts. They both benefit from the relationship. Bouchard gets the comments which means more people see the profile which means more followers and reach and these guys get the buzz of connecting with a beautiful woman who is out of reach normally.”

As for guys looking to build bridges online in genuine fashion, not as a passe pickup artist, Jayne stressed the importance of honesty: “Simplicity and keeping it real goes a long way when it comes to approaching women and getting a positive response.”

She also highlighted the importance of being aware of your environment. Making conversation at the beach is a slightly different ball game to striking up a conversation at a bar, for instance: “Keep it casual [at the beach] and keep your distance… because when you are wearing fewer clothes space needs to be larger so you don’t invade her space.”

“Starting up a conversation at the beach is different to the bar, less direct, more subtle and casual feeling more like a friendly conversation. That’s why eye contact, body language and tonality are important to spark up the attraction and flirting and keep her guessing which also creates more intrigue.”

As a general rule, “If you’re approaching [someone],” Jayne told us, focus on your common ground: “You might want to start with an innocent introduction, a compliment and then ask about their interests or anything you both are interested in. Keep the conversation light-hearted and give some time in between messages. This will spark interest and keep them guessing. These conversations might take some time to build rapport and connection however are worth it.”

Jayne also shared, in her opinion, many women actually find it a shame these days fewer guys have the confidence to approach them in real life – which may be down to the creepy “pickup” stigma that has come to be associated with these interactions.

“I hear women say all the time they wish a man would just call or meet her in person, get off the dating apps and stop texting.”

However, this is “NOT in a pickup artist approach where you have to be someone else but more in a way where you can be your best version by being your true authentic self by actually having a voice and living up to your own values and integrity,” Jayne added.

RELATED: Eugenie Bouchard Offers Brutal Dating Lesson Every Man Needs To Hear

Read: approaching someone in itself isn’t (necessarily) what makes an interaction creepy or sleazy – it’s how you do it.

“Pick up artists are so passe. I think then it comes to approaching it’s important not to overthink it, just treat [the person you’re approaching] like a friend at first. Give them a compliment, ask questions and share something interesting about yourself. What are your talents, accomplishments that you could share with her without gloating. Women love a confident man who is intelligent and knows what she wants, talk about things you’re passionate about and confident about thins will spark her interest.”

“Treating the approaching like a game feels inauthentic and women can detect that desperation, keeping it real being yourself is a much better method of gaining success. The reality is there are plenty of fish in the sea, if it doesn’t work out with her it will work out with someone else.”

“The problem is not the approaching because women [often] like it, it’s actually the way it is being executed, are you being real or are you treating it like a game. The latter will fail in the end.”

Mbappé Flaunts Ultra Rare Nike Sneakers With ‘Optimistic’ Colour Coordination Move
Mbappé Flaunts Ultra Rare Nike Sneakers With ‘Optimistic’ Colour Coordination Move

Kylian Mbappé has never been a wallflower.

The 21-year-old Frenchman has had one of the most stratospheric rises in modern football. He made his Ligue 1 debut at only 16 years old with Monaco in 2016, and was immediately impactful, helping them nab the 2016-17 title. He then moved to legendary team Paris Saint-Germain with his rumoured €145 million transfer fee plus €35 million in add-ons making him the most expensive teenager ever as well as being the most expensive transfer ever within a domestic league.

Since he’s been with PSG, he’s been incredibly successful, breaking records after records and also securing a spot on Les Bleus – the French national team. Mbappé’s star continues to rise; the man’s on a high.

Maybe it’s that elation that’s seen him celebrate a stellar 2020 – a year which marked Mbappé’s 100th goal for PSG despite having caught COVID-19 at the start of the year, and one where PSG were crowned Ligue 1 champions – by dying his hair bubblegum blue.

Has all the success gone to his head? Hard to say. We will say, however, that it’s a stroke of genius matching your shoes to your hair, as Mbappé’s done here with a rare pair of Nike Air Max 97 ‘Shanghai Kaleidoscope’ sneakers.

Released as part of Nike’s Air Max Day 2018 “On Air” design contest, these limited-edition sneakers feature a unique multi-layered ripstop construction and semi-translucent soles, with a big bubble of Nike’s signature Air technology sandwiched between. Originally retailing for 270 AUD, these now go for around 700 AUD on StockX.

As a Nike athlete, Mbappé’s in the enviable position of having access to just about any limited release the brand puts out – and he certainly takes advantage of that. This year, he’s been spotted wearing rare pairs like the Nike Air Max 720 ‘Odell Beckham Jr‘ in Desert Ore, Dunk Low ‘Syracuse‘, Jordan I ‘Bred‘ and Jordan VI ‘Quai54‘ among others.

But enough about the shoes – what about his head? We’re not sure how we feel about the hair colour. Sure, it’s patriotic, but it also makes him look like a human highlighter. Will he paint the ball blue if he goes for a header?

Mbappé will next see action in PSG’s upcoming fixture against Northern French team Lille on the 21st. PSG also have a game against Strasbourg on Christmas Eve.

Canberra Set For Sydney-Style ‘Rentpocalypse’… But Worse
Canberra Set For Sydney-Style ‘Rentpocalypse’… But Worse

Canberra’s a weird place. Unlike most Australian cities, it’s a planned city. It’s also the biggest inland city, as well as being the country’s capital. Filled with politicians, porn and fireworks (plus marijuana now), it’s got a misanthropic vibe that’d even give Sydney a run for its money.

It certainly used to be the case that you’d only go to Canberra for work or a school excursion, but Canberra has undergone a unique revival in recent years. It’s now home to funky restaurants, decent nightlife, great craft beer… And terrible, terrible rent prices.

Canberra now has the dubious distinction of having the most expensive rent in the country. Sydney and Melbourne still boast more expensive property prices, with suburbs like Toorak and Point Piper some of the world’s most exclusive postcodes. But thanks to intense competition between public servants, politicians and other high rollers, Canberra rent prices have skyrocketed in recent years.

When COVID-19 hit Australia, the cost of rent dropped across the country, with current renters renegotiating with their landlords and vacant properties desperate to find people to fill them. Rent prices have continued to fall across the country… Except for Canberra. Indeed, as early as October, rent prices in Canberra were back to their ludicrous pre-pandemic highs – and it’s only getting worse, Allhomes reports.

So what gives? How has Canberra weathered the ‘rentpocalypse’ that’s gripped Australia’s other capitals, and are they headed for another, all-together different rental price crisis?

A post shared by Visit Canberra (@visitcanberra)

Firstly, Canberra simply hasn’t had as many COVID-19 cases as other cities. Part of that has to do with geography: because the Australian Capital Territory is so small and is completely inland, it’s easy to control who comes in and out of the city – and you can’t have water-borne debacles like NSW’s Ruby Princess fiasco. Canberra also sees far less international air arrivals than other Australian cities.

Secondly, Canberra’s public servant population has been key. The economy might be in the toilet and unemployment up around the country, but there haven’t been as many layoffs in the public sector as the private sector. Because the public sector has continued to operate, the subsidiary industries that support those workers – logistics, sanitation, etc. – have also been in a better place economically.

Thirdly, more and more people are waking up to how good of a place to live it’s becoming. It’s like how Hobart and Byron Bay have become hugely popular in recent years, a trend which has only accelerated this year thanks to The Bat Kiss.

RELATED: The Awkward Truth About Byron Bay’s ‘Locals Only’ Attitude

These conditions, combined with the aforementioned low rental property supply and high average wages in Canberra, have made rent particularly unaffordable. Canberra’s looming ‘rentpocalypse’, then, is one at the expense of renters, rather than landlords.

Time will tell if Canberra rent prices will continue to rise. It’s quite possible that as Sydney and Melbourne’s rental markets return to normal, Canberra’s overheated market will cool off a bit. But if 2020 has taught us anything, it’s to expect the unexpected.

Thailand’s Spicy New ‘Travel Route’ A Godsend For Single Tourists
Thailand’s Spicy New ‘Travel Route’ A Godsend For Single Tourists

Remember the time you had a whirlwind summer fling? Me neither. That's part of the reason Thailand's latest collaboration with Tinder is so scroll stopping – letting your hair down overseas is a far removed reality for most people presently.

However, the same lockdowns and rules which are making partying around the globe a particularly tantalising (read: not feasible) prospect right now are also making the aforementioned 'matchmaking' initiative mostly limited to domestic Thai tourists.

In any case, it's still interesting to hear: in an effort to boost tourism, Thai authorities are working with Tinder to bring tourists tour packages designed for matchmaking.

It's not a realistic proposition right now for Australian travellers – anyone hoping to leave Australia must be doing so for essential reasons (and get an exemption from the Australian government to do so) – but for domestic Thai travellers, one imagines this is an exciting initiative.

CNN Travel reports, "The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), the country's official travel body, is planning nine itineraries throughout the country and is launching with three pilot trips. The first, which will take place on December 20, is a cruise along Bangkok's Chao Phraya River for up to 100 singletons."

"The day-long experience includes sightseeing, dinner and a talk from a Feng Shui expert 'who will share tips on how to pay homage to Buddha and ask for blessings,' which should invariably give tongue-tied daters something to talk about."

"The other two pilot experiences," CNN Travel reports, "are a beachside party and concert in Phuket and a train trip to the Pa Sak Jolasid Dam in Lopburi, both in January 2021 and accommodating up to 50 people each. Bookings open on December 15 and can be made through the Sneaksdeal website (in Thai)."

"The 'Single Travel Route' targets solo travellers who prefer to travel alone to various destinations in Thailand," TAT Governor, Mr Yuthasak Supasorn, said in a media release.

Right now, even though Thailand's borders are open to foreign tourists, to go there you must quarantine in a hotel room for two weeks and pay for a visa application before arriving (unlike in pre-Covid years, where you could do it on arrival). You must also be allowed to leave your home country.

On a more positive note: if this 'single travel route' proves successful, maybe it could be the new Contiki coming out of Covid? Whether you find the prospect offputting or awesome, it's sure food for thought...

Most Adventurous Booty Call Ever Lands Scottish Man In Jail
Most Adventurous Booty Call Ever Lands Scottish Man In Jail

Britain is a country of awkward idealists. From Hugh Grant to Samuel Taylor Coleridge, the nation has a history of bumbling romanticism.

But if Rime Of The Ancient Mariner made your heart tingle, boy have we got a sea faring tale for you. Putting history’s ‘lounge about laureates’ to shame, a 28-year-old Scottish man was recently jailed for crossing the Irish Sea on a Jetski to visit his girlfriend – contravening Covid lockdown rules in the process.

The man reportedly didn’t know how to swim, and had never ridden a jet ski before. But that didn’t stop him from attempting (and completing) the 40km journey between the Isle of Whithorn and the Isle of Man, to visit his 26 year old girlfriend.

According to the BBC, he met his girlfriend whilst previously working on the island as a roofer for four weeks in September, “on a night out.”

The crossing, which should take about 40 minutes, took the man four hours, due to his lack of experience.

Traveller reports that after reaching land, the man “trekked another 15 miles to his girlfriend’s home in [The Isle of Man’s] capital, Douglas.”

“But his romantic gesture landed him in hot water when he was arrested and charged with illegally entering the isle.”

The man, it has been reported, first met his girlfriend in September while working in Douglas. According to Traveller, “After returning to Scotland, he applied for permission to visit the Isle of Man but was refused.”

“Undeterred by the ban and determined to be reunited with Miss Radcliffe, he bought a jet ski and set off across the Irish Sea.”

The day after the man’s arrival, the couple allegedly visited two busy nightclubs. That same afternoon the man gave a police officer his girlfriend’s address as his own, the BBC reports.

According to the BBC, “Following identification checks, police arrested him on Sunday evening.”

“In mitigation, the 28-year-old’s defence advocate said he suffered from depression and was not coping with being unable to see his partner.”

The BBC also reports that when sentencing the man, Deputy High Bailiff Christopher Arrowsmith said the man had made a “deliberate and intentional attempt to circumnavigate” the border restrictions, potentially putting the community at risk.

However, after the hearing, a government spokesman allegedly said following an investigation, public health officials were “satisfied” there was “no wider risk to the public,” the BBC reports.

‘Humbling’ 1951 Encounter That Changed The Course Of Porsche In Australia
‘Humbling’ 1951 Encounter That Changed The Course Of Porsche In Australia

Some car brands have found their most dedicated fans a long way from home.

The classic Mini might be adored as an icon of British culture, but the car found an unexpectedly passionate following in Japan. Ferrari makes most of their sales in the Middle East, their supercars a common sight on the streets of Dubai. The classic Volkswagen Beetle was still being manufactured in Brazil and Mexico until very recently, and while General Motors doesn’t sell many Buicks in the United States any more, it’s one of the most popular car brands in China.

Similarly, Australians love Porsches.

Australians have always had an appetite for high-performance German cars – with Audi’s RS, BMW’s M and Mercedes-Benz’s AMG divisions finding one of their biggest markets in the Land Down Under – but our affinity with Porsche has a long and unique history.

Indeed, one entrepreneurial Melburnian was responsible for making Australia one of the first countries outside of Europe to ever receive Porsches, and it’s all thanks to a humbling, chance encounter in Austria just after WWII.

On his way from Austria to Switzerland in 1951 to investigate the latest in pump technology for Australia’s nation-building Snowy Hydro project, Melbourne pump distributor Norman McKinnon Hamilton found his cumbersome rented Oldsmobile 88 was ’rounded up’ by a low slung, silver sports car, Porsche Australia relates.

“In a village further up the valley, he came upon noted German racing driver and Porsche tester, Richard von Frankenberg, at an inn, with his silver steed still ‘pinging’ hot outside. The two struck up a conversation.”

“Interrupting his mission of refining its chassis, von Frankenberg showed Norman Hamilton over the sleek little car. Then, in a burst of entrepreneurial enthusiasm, Hamilton followed the German back to the Porsche factory and after a formal introduction to Ferry Porsche, followed by a short factory tour, he secured the Australian and New Zealand commercial rights to sell the rear-engined sports cars on a hand-shake. In doing so, he became only the second Porsche agent outside Europe, following Max Hoffman in the USA.”

Norman Hamilton shows off one of the two first right-hand drive Porsche 356s to celebrities and motorsport identities at a function at the South Melbourne Town Hall. Image: Porsche Australia

Rather than get sour grapes that he got bested on the autobahn, Hamilton was instead inspired by that humbling experience to bring Porsche to Australia – a risky and groundbreaking move.

Porsche as a firm had only existed for a few years, and with the exception of one custom job, had never made right-hand drive vehicles. That didn’t faze Hamilton, who helped bankroll the added tooling costs. It meant that the two Porsche 356s Hamilton brought back to Melbourne with him later that year were the first two production right-hand drive Porsches, meaning Australia got their own Porsches before other big right-hand drive markets such as Japan or the UK.

There’s an argument to be made that without Hamilton, Porsche might never have expanded internationally the way they did – instead remaining a niche, low-volume manufacturer with little international presence.

RELATED: ‘Will Never Happen Again’: Porsche Shuts Down Runway At Sydney Airport For Entire Day

It wasn’t just passenger cars that Porsche found success with Down Under, either. Porsche industrial engines based on the 356’s later 1,600cc engine were used in the Australian Antarctic Division over-snow transport, and also found use around Mt. Kosciuszko. Porsche even had a brief stint in Supercars in the 60s when revised rules meant that the sleek German 911 could go up against the big V8-powered ‘Yank Tanks’ common in the sport.

In 1992 Porsche AG took control of all Porsche operations in Australia, ending 41 years of Hamilton family control of the marque. The company has grown to be one of the longest continuously represented makes in the Australian motor industry – ironically, Porsche was in Australia before its now-parent brand, Volkswagen (VWs were first sold commercially here from 1953, two years after Hamilton imported his first two Porsches).

It speaks to the Australian entrepreneurial spirit – as well as our open-mindedness when it comes to car brands – that Porsche found a home here so quickly and so passionately.

All we need now is some bright spark to bring RUF to Oz…

Sergio Ramos Hints At ‘Alternative’ Post Football Career While Flexing Fresh Rolex
Sergio Ramos Hints At ‘Alternative’ Post Football Career While Flexing Fresh Rolex

Sergio Ramos is an unusual man. Not only is he one of the most ‘clutch’ (in every sense of the word) defenders in the world and a brilliant captain, but he’s also got good taste in watches – something you don’t always see in top-flight footballers. While other superstars like Cristiano Ronaldo revel in buying ugly, expensive watches and showing off a new hairstyle every other week, Ramos is more often seen honing his fitness.

But one vice; one headline-grabbing habit that he shares with many other star players – like David Beckham, Lionel Messi and Neymar Jr. – is a penchant for tattoos. Indeed, Ramos might be one of the most inked current football players, boasting a whopping 42 tatts. That’s enough to cover his entire back and arms.

It’s not surprising, then, that the 34-year-old Andalusian would be interested in a post-football career as a tattoo artist (he’d potentially save himself a stack of cash). And it looks like he’s getting ahead of the game – pun entirely intended.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Sergio Ramos (@sergioramos)

Ramos took to Instagram earlier today to show off his skills with a tattoo gun, practising on a small canvas under the watchful eye of famous Spanish tattoo artist Rodrigo Gálvez. Black nitrite gloves on and concentrating with a tattoo gun, Ramos really looks the part – with only the Rolex Yacht-Master 42 (ref. 226659) perched on his wrist giving away the fact that he’s no regular artist’s apprentice.

One of Rolex’s lesser-known models, the Yacht-Master was first released in 1992. Similar in design to the highly popular Submariner, the Yacht-Master is visually distinct thanks to its much larger hour markers and its matt bezel with raised numerals. (It’s also slightly larger and less water-resistant than the modern Submariner.)

Ramos’ model appears to be the white gold version on Rolex’s ‘Oysterflex’ sports bracelet, which features flexible metal blades overmoulded with high-performance elastomer. One of Rolex’s more sporty timepieces, it retails for around 41,000 AUD.

Ramos seems to be a dab hand with a tattoo gun, even if it’s just a blank he’s practising on. We wonder how well his patience and dexterity on the football pitch would translate to inking human skin…

Ramos’ football career has plenty of life in it, however. Both the captain of Real Madrid and the Spanish national football team, Ramos is one of the most formidable and powerful players in the world, and 2020 has been yet another year of success for both him and his teams. Real Madrid secured a record 34th La Liga title earlier this year with Ramos at the helm. More recently, Spain absolutely demolished Germany in the group stage of the 2020-21 UEFA Nations League.

Spain’s next game will be a World Cup qualifier against Greece, tentatively scheduled for the 26th of March next year. Spain has already made the semi-finals of the Nations League, and will be up against Italy sometime in October.

Watch Sergio Ramos destroy his biggest workouts below.
