World’s Best Destinations For Chasing An Endless Winter Holiday
World’s Best Destinations For Chasing An Endless Winter Holiday

Every winter, the forecast is the same: frigid weather and a mass of snowbirds fleeing it.But not all travellers dream of sun-soaked paradises when the mercury drops. Some prefer the unique charms of cooler temps – the crisp air, the seasonal events, the thinned-out tourist hordes – while some destinations are simply at their best under a blanket of snow.Whether you’re in the market for a Christmas-saturated wonderland, warming drinks after a day on the slopes, or just off-peak prices, these are the best escapes for year-round winter adventures.Beach bums need not apply.

January: Japan

winter
Jigokudani Monkey Park, Yamanouchi, Japan
Japan may not jump to mind first as a winter destination, but snow sports lovers know better. The country is home to some of the best powder in Asia, and with more than 500 resorts to choose from, you’ll never run out of slopes. After a long day of skiing or snowboarding, do as the Japanese do: retire to an onsen, a traditional hot springs bath, to relax your taxed muscles. If athleticism is not your strong point, snow-covered temples are a highlight of Japanese winter, as are the bathing macaques at Jigokudani Monkey Park.

February: Taiwan

Pingxi Sky Lantern Festival, Taiwan
Anyone who’s scrolled through Instagram’s travel community is sure to have seen this dazzling sight. Taiwan’s annual Pingxi Sky Lantern Festival sees thousands of glowing rice paper lanterns released into the night, carrying handwritten wishes, prayers, and vows for the future in honour of Chinese New Year. The local government also hosts carnivals, folk performances, lantern-making workshops, and other cultural happenings. The exact dates of the new year’s period vary according to the Chinese lunar calendar, but the event frequently falls during February.

March: Alaska

winter
Northern Lights, Fairbanks, Alaska
Though the temperatures are low, things are just heating up in Alaska in March. Winter is high season for experiencing the eerie beauty of the Northern Lights in cities like Anchorage and Fairbanks. The legendary Iditarod dog sled race, which pounds through 1000 miles of rugged terrain from Anchorage to Nome, takes place during March, as does the annual World Ice Art Championship. The adventurous should also consider a trip to the breathtakingly blue Mendenhall Ice Caves outside of Juneau before the receding glacier is gone forever.

April: Denmark

winter
Copenhagen, Denmark
Temperatures remain brisk towards end of Scandinavian spring, keeping the main influx of tourists at bay until May. It’s prime time for budget-conscious travellers to visit Denmark without the weight of the region’s notoriously high prices. Head to Copenhagen for the best of both worlds: a chance to experience the cosy hygge that’s currently so trendy, and an opportunity to enjoy the outdoors at the seasonal reopening of the Tivoli Gardens amusement park. At worst, the chilly air is an excuse to spend more time in Copenhagen’s myriad celebrated restaurants.

May: Iran

winter
Dizin, Iran
Thanks to ultra high elevation, ski season lasts until late May in Iran. While unimaginative snow bunnies flock to Meribel and Vail, those in-the-know head two hours north of Tehran to the Dizin Ski Resort – a favourite holiday haunt of the last shah. Dizin’s marked slopes are splendid, and treks into the back-country and up volcanic Mt. Damavand, the highest peak in the Middle East, offer some of the most hair-raising off-piste skiing in the world. Visitors also report a more relaxed vibe than in Tehran itself, though you’ll still find little après ski scene to speak of in this conservative nation.

June: Argentina

winter
Perito Moreno Glacier, Los Glaciares National Park, Argentina
The magnificent natural landscapes of Argentina boast a special kind of magic during the Southern Hemisphere’s winter months. Torres del Paine National Park sports clear skies, low winds, and crowd-free snowscapes. Los Glaciares National Park is home to more glaciers than any other part of Patagonia, as well as the region’s two most famous peaks: Cerro Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre. Tierra del Fuego and Bariloche are popular for their ever-growing winter sports scenes, while the Valdes Peninsula offers excellent winter wildlife watching.

July: New Zealand

winter
Heli-Ski Tour, New Zealand
The cold season brings a near-endless supply of activities to ‘the adventure capital of the world’. New Zealand serves up a smorgasbord of opportunities to get your adrenaline pumping all year round, most famously in Queenstown, but winter offers special delights. Treble Cone, Coronet Peak, The Remarkables, and Cardrona draw skiers and snowboarders of all stripes, while more intrepid athletes can skip the lift ticket in favour of off-the-grid heli-skiing. And there’s so much more where that came from…RELATED: The 6 Best Snow Adventures In New Zealand

August: The Arctic

winter
Arctic Cruise
With the sea ice melted and waterways once again open, July and August are ideal times for an Arctic expedition. Cruises typically navigate around the Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard, as well as Greenland and the Russian far east. Experience 24-hour sunshine and wildflower-filled tundra from the warmth and safety of your vessel. Lucky passengers may also get an eyeful of native birds, walrus, seals, whales, narwhals, caribou, and the elusive polar bear.

September: Sweden

winter
Icehotel, Jukkasjärvi, Sweden
Live in the lap of frozen luxury at Sweden’s Icehotel. Located near the town of Jukkasjärvi, the ephemeral hotel is built annually from ice and snow harvested from a nearby river, then melts into mush with the arrival of spring. Fortunately for fans of cool digs, a new initiative has made some of the arctic accommodations available all year round. Each suite is individually themed and hand carved by artists commissioned from around the world. Solar energy ensures the temperature remains a frosty -5 to -8 degrees Celsius 365 days a year.

October: Chile

winter
Portillo, Chile
The sight of the snow-capped Andes alone makes a winter holiday in Chile worth it. The weather in the north of the country is manageable, with mild days and chilly nights, and only occasional rain. Farther south the weather turns cold and wet, while the mountains transform into some of the Southern Hemisphere’s best ski spots. Valle Nevado boasts three hotels and the most advanced ski lift system in South America. Portillo is another popular and pro-approved stop, complete with a jaw-dropping pool.

November: Morocco

winter
Taghazout, Morocco
Morocco in winter is a side of Africa rarely seen. The majestic Atlas Mountains are snow-coated and spectacular, and ripe for exploration by intrepid climbers. Winter is also the optimal time to experience the country’s exceptional surfing. From September to April you’ll find bigger swells and mild weather, the perfect combination for surfers of all skill levels. The fishing village of Taghazout, famous for its long right hand point breaks, is a popular destination.

December: Germany

winter
Christmas Market, Annaberg-Buchholz, Germany
No one does Christmas quite like Germany. Christmas markets can be found in every corner of the country, hawking handcrafted goods, hearty local eats, and warming mulled wine with enough festive cheer to delight any Grinch. The seasonal retail therapy comes with a heaping side of entertainment including ice skating rinks, traditional music, puppet theatre, jugglers, acrobats, fire artists, choirs, dance groups, horse-drawn carriages, and carnival rides – enough to make your stunted heart grow three sizes, at least.RELATED: World’s Best Destinations For Chasing An Endless Summer Holiday

Tom Ford & Jared Leto Prove That Art & Film Awards Are The Benchmark For Flawless Style
Tom Ford & Jared Leto Prove That Art & Film Awards Are The Benchmark For Flawless Style

When it comes to proven style icons like Tom Ford and Jared Leto there really isn’t much one can pick on.

Okay perhaps the latter you can ponder a bit sometimes, but what stands as a testament to the truth is that these art and film awards like the 2017 LACMA Art + Film Gala presented by Gucci continually draws out some of the most inspiring and impeccable looks in men’s evening wear.

Sure there’s the conventional black tux thrown around for most but it’s more about the execution that nails the mandatory rules of the style bible. There’s a forgotten classicism that’s often brought back to the present day with an added touch of flair which brings faith back into the modern man’s wardrobe – an area that has lately become more the domain of tieless suits and activewear.

Take for example Ford’s unique rendition of evening wear with a twist thanks to his midnight blue velvet dinner jacket paired with the classic black tuxedo. No stone is left unturned here with detailing applied right down to the bespoke shirt buttons.

Actor Jared Leto also flew the flag the right way with a three-piece dinner-inspired ensemble complete with loud yet elegant floral motifs on an overcoat. His overall look more than satisfies the art aspect of the awards but there’s a also a hint of rockstar in there who’s prepared to shake hands with a world leader.

Elsewhere it was all about Armie Hammer and Lee Byung-Hun in classic black tuxedos whilst Usher worked with his own rendition of a traditional look with a granddad collared dress shirt, cotton lapel flower and luxe sneakers sneaking their way into the look.

Take a browse through the gallery to see the best looks from the night.

South Korea Is Trying To Up The Ante In Insane Airport Amenities
South Korea Is Trying To Up The Ante In Insane Airport Amenities

Just as Dubai is in the news for replacing airport security checkpoints with digital face-scanning fish, South Korea has snatched the spotlight with an outlandish transit story of its own.Airports are in a constant contest to develop new ways to occupy your time. The competition is fierce to woo travellers with the prospect of butterfly gardens, yoga studios, golf courses, mini museums, and rooftop swimming pools – but if Incheon International Airport has its way, it will soon wear the crown for insane airport amenities.

Airport Amenities
When you play the game of airport amenities, you win or you die.
The South Korean airport recently announced plans to open a 2,500-square-foot cosmetic surgery centre in its soon-to-be-completed transit terminal. The unusual undertaking is a response to the popularity of medical tourism in the country, which is growing at an astonishing rate thanks to promotion from the country’s official tourism board and government-approved medical travel agencies.Incheon envisions the surgery centre as a way to attract more foreign patients, giving them access to South Korea’s stellar surgeons without needing to formally enter the country. Unfortunately for Incheon, everyone else views it as an outrageous liability. The Incheon International Airport Corporation faced immediate backlash from the medical community. The Korean Association of Plastic Surgeons (KAPS) and the Korean Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons publicly condemned the plans, noting the potential dangers of flying immediately after going under the knife or needle. Other medical professionals expressed concern about patients making snap decisions on invasive procedures, complications that could lead to missed flights, subpar plane hygiene, and access to local hospitals. To date, no doctors have expressed interest in using the space, despite applications being open since mid-September. Your layover brotox may be a pipe dream, but at least Singapore can rest easy knowing it will probably still have the world’s best airport next year.

Meet The $200, 28% ABV Beer That's Illegal In 12 US States
Meet The $200, 28% ABV Beer That's Illegal In 12 US States

It may not be the world’s strongest beer, but this rare Samuel Adams drop will still get you smashed in record time. That is, if you can get your hands on it.Released only every two years, Utopias is an “extreme barrel-aged beer” so potent its ABV clocks in at 28% and 12 US states have banned its sale. Hops hounds in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Idaho, Mississippi, Montana, New Hampshire, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vermont, and Washington will be all out of luck when the limited edition brew goes on sale next month.“Utopias challenges conventional thinking about beer but it is definitely a beer – that’s what’s so exciting!” Jim Koch, founder of Samuel Adams, told Forbes. “Utopias is brewed like any other Sam Adams beer, using four main ingredients and the traditional brewing process, but it’s the yeast strains we use, as well as our barrel-aging and blending process that makes Utopias truly one-of-a-kind.”Utopias uses three varieties of German hops and draws from a blend of Sam Adams batches, some that have been aged in barrels for up to 24 years. This year’s barrels ranged from old Buffalo Trace bourbon casks to Scandinavian Aquavit barrels, with the final blend aged in Moscat barrels.“This process, along with our blends from various barrel-aged beers, creates the most complex naturally fermented beer available anywhere – truly the lunatic fringe of extreme beer!” Koch added with great enthusiasm. This year marks the 10th release of Samuel Adams Utopias. A run of 13,000 bottles will be produced, each with a triple-digit price tag of US$200 per 24 ounces. If you’re lucky enough to score a taste, it’s billed as “reminiscent of a rich vintage Port, old Cognac, or fine Sherry with notes of dark fruit, subtle sweetness, and a deep rich malty smoothness.”In other words, drink it like a liquor, not a beer. Sam Adams recommends a serving size of just 1 ounce, and though we’re all for living on the edge, even we have to agree that knocking back a pint of this may not be your brainiest move.

Twitter Employee Left Donald Trump A Parting Gift On Last Day Of Work

If you were fortunate enough to jump on Twitter earlier today and noticed that Donald Trump’s account had disappeared, you weren’t dreaming.

You’re fired

The dire situation on the social stratosphere played out for a whole 11 minutes before the U.S President’s account was restored, causing many to speculate what exactly had happened.

Well now we know. The government and elections team for Twitter announced via a tweet that Donald Trump’s account was “inadvertently deactivated due to human error by a Twitter employee”.

“The account was down for 11 minutes, and has since been restored,” the team continued. “We are continuing to investigate and are taking steps to prevent this from happening again.”

Those who jumped onto Trump’s account at around 10am AEDT would have been met with the familiar error prompt of: “Sorry, that page doesn’t exist”.

Once it went back online it was straight back to business with Trump tweeting about tax cuts followed by the suggestion of cancelling the diversity visa lottery program in the wake of the New York truck rampage attack. His comments overnight even went as far as suggesting the detained attacker be sent to Guantanamo Bay where he’d receive the death penalty.

In any case, many appeared to rejoice in the demise of the President’s erasure from social media.

In other notable Trump news, his Mexican border wall has been also recently been spotted in its prototype testing phase.

Singapore Airlines Unveils Its Amazing New A380 Business Class Suites
Singapore Airlines Unveils Its Amazing New A380 Business Class Suites

Singapore Airlines have pulled the covers off their revamped business class and first class seats for the Airbus A380.

The host of changes are aimed at giving passengers more personal space in a modern fit out filled with some surprising creature comforts.

Kicking things off nicely in business class are a select number of middle seats which can convert into full double beds. Overlooking the fact that you’d be catching zees in a bed in front of other passengers, the idea is still pretty bold in terms of honouring the airline’s latest ‘space made personal’ motto.

The business class seats themselves are 25-inches wide which makes for a decent amount of room to conduct work and rest in privacy. The layout remains unchanged with a forward-facing 1-2-1 configuration complete with extended seat shell and a slide down divider for the middle seats.

There’s also the ability to recline the seats into a ‘Lazy Z’ or Sundeck position as a precursor to fully reclining the seat into a flat bed. Once there, passengers have 1.98 metres of wiggle room from head to toe.

On the storage front business class provides ample room carry-on luggage under the seat as well as open compartments to hold things like laptops, bags, smartphones, electronics and more. KrisWorld inflight entertainment is presented on a generous 18-inch HD screen alongside an AC powerpoint and high-powered USB ports for quick charging.

Those wishing to step up their flight experience can enjoy the spoils of first class with their own suite which comes with a fully flat bed and separate leather recliner so that no conversion is required. There’s also two generously sized bathrooms which come complete with a sit down vanity counter.

The Singapore Airlines A380 will begin flights on the Sydney to London route from December 2017.

Conor McGregor Knows How Paisley Should Be Worn…But Struggles With His Tie Knot
Conor McGregor Knows How Paisley Should Be Worn…But Struggles With His Tie Knot

Less power move and more fashion statement, the paisley tie and its corresponding accessories have come a long way since the iconic 80s.

But first, a quick history lesson. Paisley refers to a distinct ornamental design which features a variation of the middle-eastern floral teardrop motif with a curved upper end. Whilst it was most popular throughout the 19th century before reaching its peak in the banging 80s, paisley had retreated in recent times, appearing mainly in the domain of film villains, old news anchors and those willing to rock the business attire of their dodgy retired stockbroker dad.

Well times are changing and paisley appears to be making its resurgence once again. Championing this movement is none other than UFC’s golden child, Conor McGregor.

At the red carpet for his film premiere, Notorious, the Irish fighter went down the classic pinstriped suit route and paired it with a pink and red paisley tie complete with matching pocket square and boutonniere.

The rules of paisley in 2017 are simple:

  • Keep the sheen low as to not blind strangers and draw too much attention
  • Don’t go more than two colours or paisley patterns at a time as this messes up the look
  • keep the tie on the slimmer side for a modern look

When all else fails, take a look at the gallery which showcases the McGregor X David August creations in all of its modern glory.
