Everlane Could Be Joining In With Black Friday Extravaganza

With Black Friday fast approaching – Friday 27th November for those who haven’t yet added it to their diary – the best chance (and last chance) of securing some serious bargains before Christmas will be here before you know it. But forget the usual deals associated with Black Friday such as discounts on a wide range of electronics such as TVs, headphones and laptops, you can save yourself some serious cash on a whole new wardrobe of clothes. And where better to buy those clothes than eco-friendly retailer Everlane? Now, Everlane hasn’t actually confirmed if it will be getting in on the Black Friday action this year, but since the retailer did take part in Cyber Monday (the Monday following Black Friday that really is your last chance to score some discounts) we can logically assume there will be some savings to be had come Friday 27th November.Everlane sort of got involved with Black Friday in 2019, but instead of offering discounts on clothing, donated $15 Oceana, the largest international advocacy organization focused solely on ocean conservation, for every order placed up to $300,000 (the collaboration’s target). We’ll update this page as soon as we know more, and of course, we will be picking out our must-have discounted pieces. We’re already eyeing up a few pieces for our own shopping baskets, such as these organic premium-weight slub crew t-shirts (you can never enough good-quality tees), this fleece-lined overshirt is an absolute winter must-have, you should probably get a new stylish weekender bag for those domestic holidays you’ll be taking for a good few years, and we’re simply enamoured with this leek-coloured Oxford shirt. Of course, that’s just us, to view the full Everlane menswear collection, head to the website and start bookmarking your favourite pieces right now.

Former World Champion’s Warning For The Future Of Formula One
Former World Champion’s Warning For The Future Of Formula One

Australia punches well above its weight when it comes to Formula One. Not only does the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne traditionally kick off the Formula One World Championship, but the Land Down Under has also produced its fair share of racing legends: Jack Brabham, Mark Webber, Daniel Ricciardo…One of our greatest drivers is Alan Jones. Born in Melbourne and active in F1 from 1975 to 1986, Jones was the second-ever Australian World Champion, and competed in a total of 117 Grands Prix, winning 12 and achieving 24 podium finishes. Jones is also the last Australian driver to win the Australian Grand Prix, and has raced everything from Indy Cars to V8 Supercars and even the 24 Hours of Le Mans.Having retired from racing for good in 2002, Jones these days busies himself as a commentator for Network Ten’s F1 coverage as well as acting as an ambassador for Lexus Australia. DMARGE had the chance to chat with the affable MBE, who shared how he’s been loving the 2020 Formula One season so far.“It’s quite different this year because of the restrictions around COVID-19,” Jones says.

“We’re seeing drivers race on circuits they don’t usually go to, but I’m enjoying watching how they adapt… There hasn’t been a race in Portugal for a number of years and it’s really great to see Portugal hosting a Grand Prix again. With Formula One, it’s just as entertaining off the track as it is on the track.”

The Portuguese Grand Prix on the 25th of October was historic not only because it was the first race at Portimão since 1996, but also because it saw Lewis Hamilton clinch his 92nd win, finally eclipsing Michael Schumacher’s all-time record and confirming Hamilton as the GOAT. Perth boy Ricciardo sadly came 9th in Portugal but bounced back with a third-place victory at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix in Imola on the 1st of November. For what it’s worth, Jones is optimistic about Ricciardo’s hopes for the rest of the season.“He has always been a fairly strong driver and I think Renault and Ricciardo are starting to gel well now. I also predicted Renault would deliver, it’s just taken longer than I thought. If you look at their engines in the past, they have supplied to many winning teams, so they have the potential to produce a very good engine.”

Jones (front left) at Sydney Motorsport Park with the iconic Lexus LFA supercar.
While Jones’ love for the sport hasn’t dulled one bit, he relates that F1 these days isn’t quite the same as it was when he was active.“Formula One is very different now when comparing it to the 1980s. We had less regulations and penalties and drivers would race wheel to wheel.”

“Watching Formula One these days I find that drivers are often penalised for mistakes, which makes them more nervous to make a passing manoeuvre. I understand the need for regulations and how important they are [but] Formula One is a sport where mistakes can be made and I don’t believe drivers should be penalised for that.”

“I also see examples where drivers are penalised for going off the track and coming back on, which stewards deemed to be unsafe. I believe that in some of these cases if the driver hadn’t made that manoeuvre it could have resulted in hitting the fence and this would be more dangerous and unsafe. It’s these type of rules that are very different from the 1980s.”F1 should pay attention to Jones’ concerns. Even FIA President Jean Todt admits that the sport’s become boring and predictable, Essentially Sports reports – and while we certainly don’t want to see drivers or spectators get injured, a less strict sport might be just the shot in the arm it needs. In any case, Jones will still be turning his attention to the track this weekend, as the Turkish Grand Prix kicks off in Istanbul. Will Ricciardo get a P1? Will Williams make Jones proud? Time will tell.

Commando Steve Drops Free But Brutal Workout For Australians
Commando Steve Drops Free But Brutal Workout For Australians

Whether you gain your fitness inspiration from Mark Wahlberg, The Rock or Ronaldo, we’re not exactly left wanting for brutal workouts to copy.Commando Steve doesn’t think we’ve got enough, however (either that or he simply wants to give us another option).Real name Steve Willis, Commando Steve is a former fitness instructor for the Australian army who now spends his time training anyone who wants to get into the best shape of their life.On that note: Commando just dropped a free workout that makes for leg-buckling reading.

A post shared by Commando Steve (@commandosteve)

Commando Steve’s workout asks you to complete the following and clock your time:

  • Run 1200m
  • 100 Ring Rows
  • 100 Push Ups
  • 100 Sit-Ups
  • 100 Squats
  • 100 Burpees
  • Run 1200m

100 burpees alone would likely send us to ER, so this workout really isn’t for the faint-hearted.Steve adds that you should perform this workout with a 7-8 RPE (Rated Perceived Exertion). This scale runs from 0-10 and relates to how difficult the exercise(s) are, with a rating of 7-8 indicating this workout is classed as hard to very hard. That said, Steve does provide some solace for those that feel they’ll be unable to complete his challenge without needing heavy resuscitation.“The intent of the Commando Daily Challenges is to encourage everyone to be active and participate in whatever capacity you can.”“Consistency is an important attribute of the daily challenge – scaling appropriately will ensure consistency in your training and ensure you have enough in reserve to dedicate to your other daily activities. The onus will be you to scale relative to your level and life priorities.”Basically, push to a level that you’re comfortable with and not to be discouraged if you can’t complete the whole challenge.Steve adds that beginners should aim to complete three sessions a week; intermediates four sessions a week and advanced trainers should be looking at completing six sessions a week.By beginner, Steve means you’re able to complete half of the challenge, intermediates should be aiming to complete three-quarters of it and advanced should ideally be completing the whole thing. It’s certainly worth trying, especially as it’s free and can be completed in your own home. You can get yourself some TRX rings to complete the rows, which attach to a door frame and you should be able to map out a 1200m run around your local roads.Steve has a heap of other free workouts that will push you to a similarly tough level.Try them if you dare.

Three US Tourists Banned From Yellowstone For Most Bizarre Reason
Three US Tourists Banned From Yellowstone For Most Bizarre Reason

You think you’ve seen it all, then this happens.

In the past few months, we’ve had a lot of bans. From one woman being told never to fly UIA again (after hopping out the emergency exit to take some sun on the wing) to an American Airlines business class passenger being kicked off a flight for hiding in her friend’s footwell, it’s been busy.

Outdoors, however, it’s been quieter (in terms of headline-grabbing stories).

Until this week, that is. Why? News just broke that an Idaho man has been banned from entering Yellowstone National Park for the next two years after he was sprung trying to cook chickens in a hot spring.

During an August trip to Yellowstone, two cousins, a neighbor and their families, “packed two chickens, canoed about eight hours and hiked to the Shoshone Geyser Basin, where they decided to cook their chickens in a hot spring,” The New York Times reports.

They still got to eat the chickens (which apparently tasted “fantastic”), but it turned out to be an expensive meal.

The New York Times reports court documents show the three men were fined between $500 and $1,200, as well as banned from the park for two years.

This came about as a ranger was tipped off about the group’s cooking pots by others in the park, and found the chickens in a burlap sack in the hot spring. The ranger questioned the group about their dinner, then returned the next day with court summons.

The Idaho man was cited for the incident and his two companions received tickets for walking in the thermal area, Traveller reports.

The park’s hydrothermal activity is thanks to the Yellowstone Volcano, which is powered by an underlying hot spot. This is a big tourist drawcard, however, it can be quite dangerous.

According to Traveller, unsafe tourist behaviour is common at the park, sharing an incident in which a reader observed a woman step off the boardwalk to pose on the steaming ground for a photo.

“She was on a crust covering the hot springs below her… That she did not break through the crust is mostly a matter of luck.”

It’s not all doom and gloom though, with many taking this year as a chance to rediscover healthy hobbies like hiking.

Park authorities announced today Yellowstone is busier than ever.

“The park hosted 360,034 recreation visits in October 2020, up 110% from October 2019. This was the busiest October on record, surpassing the previous record (252,013) set in 2015 by an increase of 43%.”

“So far in 2020, the park has hosted 3,743,907 recreation visits, down 6% from the same period last year.”

Surfer Shaming Is The Internet’s New Favourite Pastime
Surfer Shaming Is The Internet’s New Favourite Pastime

Surfing used to have an edgy aura. How things have changed.Rather than North Shore beatings we have podcast squabbles. Rather than glossy photos of Cyclops we have hot takes on hand jives (see: Surfing in the Age of the Omnipresent Camera“).Worst of all? Mini mals have been rebranded mid-lengths.The horror.Anyway, one thing has remained constant, which is that the only bits of surfing non-surfers care about are near-death experiences and slapstick comedy.

Enter: Kook of the Day. Dedicated to showcasing the most excruciating moments of surfers’ (and random water goers’) lives, the Instagram page has amassed 938 thousand followers.A recent clip DMARGE downloaded from @kookoftheday’s Instagram story perfectly captures what many believe is wrong with surfing.

Though the above kooks, one might argue, are actually displaying the sort of ‘hang loose’ spirit usually only seen in experts (only a kook needs to take great pains not to appear a kook), the video represents everything many people hate about modern surf culture. All the gear, no idea.A similar cultural zit was popped earlier this year when an incompetent surfer was lambasted online for attempting to surf in conditions well beyond his ability. To give you a frame of reference, “Back to the cafe for a half-strength decaf latte” was one of the kinder comments.RELATED: ‘Mega Swell’ Video Reveals Cruel Cultural Divide Between Sydney SurfersThe surf community’s eternal reference for ~cool~ appears to remain the ability to be spat out a barrel and pretend like it’s happened a million times.Plus not relying on surfing as a personality trait.

A Reddit thread posted yesterday entitled “PSA to new surfers and fellow kooks” suggests our fear and self-loathing is going no-where any time soon.As Covid 19 regulations see surf bans in Nazare and the south of France, it appears surf shaming could be having its time in the limelight right now.Even beach-going is coming under increased scrutiny in Australia.Provided you live somewhere surfing is permitted, we recommend you watch yourself some more Kookslams, and get back out there (we highly recommend the following video of a once professional surfer proving anyone, anywhere, can be put on their arse).

‘Plastic Purge’: Credit Card Exodus A Grim Sign For Australia’s Economy
‘Plastic Purge’: Credit Card Exodus A Grim Sign For Australia’s Economy

Credit cards have always been a symbol of opulence. The freedom of not having to carry cash around as well as the rewards many major issuers offer have always been highly desirable and aspirational. However, the allure of that fantastic plastic is wearing off. As debit cards have become more and more like credit cards – plus the rise of online layby services such as Afterpay, Klarna and Zip – many Australians are foregoing credit cards in favour of other payment options. On top of this, the economic chaos that COVID-19 has wreaked on the Australian (and world) economy has seen a huge number of Australians cancel their cards. The Bat Kiss has seen over 800,000 credit card cancellations this year, as well as seen Australians reduce their collective credit card debt by more than $7 billion, Australian Financial Review reports. On the surface level, this potentially sounds like a positive, if somewhat unsurprising phenomenon – it makes sense that Australians are showing more financial prudence during a recession and paying off their debt. However, as some commenters on Reddit’s /r/AusFinance observed, it’s not necessarily a cause for optimism.“Looks like the majority of the cards being cancelled are high balance,” one commenter related.

“800k drop in cards is ~6% of all cards, but the total outstanding balance dropped by ~25%. I suspect people with large debts paid them out with super withdrawals.”

The Federal Government, as part of their COVID-19 economic relief plan, has allowed eligible citizens and permanent residents of Australia and New Zealand to make a one-off withdrawal of super funds between $1,000 and $10,000. While many Australians have welcomed this temporary initiative, it’s also garnered a huge amount of criticism. Taking money out of super to pay off credit card debt might give Aussies some breathing room in the short term, but it comes at the expense of their retirement savings.

On a different note, other Redditors shared how satisfied they were that they cancelled their credit cards this year.“Was battling debt worth $80k pre-COVID. Brought it down to $32k now, which includes my car. Closed off one credit card and two personal loans. On track to zero debt by March next year,” one happily posted. Many also related that they cancelled their cards not because of any concerns about debt, but because the death of domestic and international air travel.“I cancelled one because no more complimentary annual domestic Virgin flight,” one explained.

“I am waiting to cancel mine but also waiting in my 13th week for Qantas to refund an airfare back to it. I have until January to cancel it. No point in having a Velocity rewards card anymore,” another bemoaned.

Maybe that’s the hidden takeaway from this: more pain for the airlines…

Turkish Icon ‘Salt Bae’ Shows How He Maintains His Incredible Physique

Salt Bae has been a joyous cultural icon ever since 2017. Starting off as a butcher’s apprentice when he was young, he eventually earned his stripes as a restauranteur, then, famously – overnight – became the salt-sprinkling sensation we know him as today.Salt Bae’s real name is Nusret Gokce, and his journey to fame began on January the 7th, 2017, the day he posted a 36-second video to Instagram titled, “Ottoman Steak.”CNBC reports, “In the clip, Gokce performs his signature moves, slicing a bone-in steak and ending with his patented sprinkling of salt.”According to Bustle, “This was by no means the first video that the butcher come restaurateur had posted of his impressive knife skills and unique salting technique, but it was the one to first catch the attention of the Twitterverse.”

Expert Busts Foolish ‘Close Friends’ Assumption Every Man Makes On Instagram
Expert Busts Foolish ‘Close Friends’ Assumption Every Man Makes On Instagram

Instagram is one of the world’s most popular social media platforms, perhaps only eclipsed by its parent company Facebook. Indeed, it’s the platform of choice for Gen Z and Millennials between the ages of 13 and 25, according to YPulse research conducted earlier this year – eclipsing other rivals like Snapchat and TikTok by a huge margin. It’s perhaps no surprise then that people use Instagram to flirt and build relationships. One feature of the photo-sharing app that facilitates this is Instagram’s ‘Close Friends’ list. First added in 2018, ‘Close Friends’ allows you to add followers to a whitelist and share content only with that group of people – handy if you’ve got a whole bunch of followers that you’d rather not share intimate stuff with.Adding someone to your Close Friends can also be a bit of a flirt, as relationship expert and advisor to Channel Ten’s The Bachelor Samantha Jayne shared exclusively with DMARGE.“If someone adds you [to] their Close Friends, it’s a sign they are interested in you… they want to get to know you and show you a side of them that isn’t available for the world to see. Kind of like a subtle sideways flirt. Almost like a VIP list that specifically gives you access to more private files. It’s letting you know you’re considered special with special privileges.”In an age where dating apps are often a crapshoot and sinking your money into OnlyFans can feel like a more convincing alternative, the less artificial nature of traditional social media platforms like Instagram can often feel like a more genuine, fertile thing to spend your time on if you’re looking for love.RELATED: ‘Anxiety, Affairs & Instagram’: Survey Shows True Impact Of Pandemic On Dating“In terms of how you should react, I think you should be flattered,” Jayne relates.“Interact with their stories and build a connection… You could add them to your list in response as a token of ‘yes, I’m interested’. If you’re not interested you could just ignore their stories,” she suggests too. It’s quite a low-stakes form of flirting, which – for neurotic souls like ourselves – is quite a good thing. But microanalysing little social media interactions like being added to someone’s Close Friends is arguably just as infuriating as dating app dickery. Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar, Jayne cautions.

“Instead of making up meanings and guessing if someone likes you based on social media patterns of engagement, get out in the real world.”

“The virtual world is confusing e.g. if a person responds to your story quickly it means they like you vs slowly it means they don’t. It’s not always accurate. Maybe the slow response could be as a result of being shy or busy or not being that invested in social media vs someone who actively is engaged with people responding to stories as a strategy to grow followers.”

In short: just because you’ve been added to someone’s Close Friends doesn’t mean there’s necessarily any romantic connection there. Don’t get ahead of yourself, and perhaps suss things out in a more explicit (not that kind of explicit) way.“A healthier way for singles to get connected with the person, via message, communicate directly, build rapport, start with a friendship, flirt and grow the connection, get to a face to face meeting, phone calls, texting etc.”Her blunt opinion? “If you stay on social media and count on likes to bring you close then it’s a slow and uncertain path.”Good luck, chaps.

One Year’s Accomodation In Maldives Bungalow Cheaper Than A Year’s Rent In Sydney

Even with Sydney rental prices falling, it’s still cheaper to stay in an Overwater Bungalow in the Maldives than in comparative properties in Manly or Bondi.Driving this home with all the subtlety of a late-night thirst trap is the tantalising offer Anantara Veli Maldives Resort recently announced. For US $30,000 (AU $41,214) you and a partner can spend a full 365 days in one of the luxury resort’s stunning Overwater Bungalows.

The exclusive offer includes all taxes and service charges, daily breakfast for two, shared return transfers between Anantara Veli and Malé as often as required, and a 25% saving on dining and spa treatments.

While at the resort you can use its fitness centre, pool, and attend yoga classes on the sunrise yoga deck free of charge. There are numerous water sports on offer too – the Maldives is a snorkeler’s, surfer’s and fisherman’s paradise. This is part of the resort’s ‘Unlimited Stays In Paradise’ package, of which the hotel has announced: “Return to your Maldivian Over Water Bungalow as often as you please and soak up the turquoise lagoon, magical sunsets, and the tropical beauty.”

“Laze on your sun deck as colorful fish swim in the crystal-clear waters below. Elevate working from home to a new level, or up sticks and escape to sunnier climes to enjoy some R&R whenever the fancy takes.”

With this offer sitting among a global trend of digital nomad luring by tourism-dependent countries, this puts the (by comparison) stark reality of working from home in Sydney into perspective.RELATED: Bermuda Starts Luring Back Travellers With An Offer Too Good To RefuseWhy work from home in your sweatpants when you could be tapping at your keyboard in a bikini or board shorts – all while paying less rent?

With the work from home revolution in full swing, this is an increasingly serious question Australians – particularly Sydneysiders – are asking themselves. Why? Just take a look at some of the properties available in Manly.

Image: Domain
For $950 per week ($49,400 a year), you can rent the above Manly flat, in a brick building, on Osborne road. The two-bedroom unit is an 8-minute walk from the Fairy Bower snorkelling spot, a 10 minute stroll from Manly beach, and a 5-minute walk from the wharf. It also has one bathroom, one car space and one balcony.
Image: Domain
Elegantly renovated though it may be, 365 days in this place will cost you $8,186 more than 365 days in an Overwater Bungalow at the Anantara Veli Maldives Resort. At Anantara Veli Maldives Resort, you can book an Overwater Bungalow for $41,214 per year ($858 per week). Not only that but this price – unlike the price of renting the above Osborne road unit in Manly – includes breakfast and activities.Yoga (and yoga pants) costing a pretty penny in Manly, it’s hard not to at least consider doing a crash course in freelancing (or convincing your boss all you need is internet) and getting the hell out of here. How about the Eastern Suburbs, you ask? Across the bridge in Bondi, you can pick up a one bedder on Campbell Parade, mere “steps” (250 to be precise) from Bondi beach, for $945 a week.
Image: Domain
Part of a collection of 12 brand new fully furnished apartments nestled in the heart of North Bondi Village, this air-conditioned apartment has a queen bed, a self contained kitchen, a bathroom and a balcony.“All residents have access to our private garden with outdoor shower, and surfboard and bike rental (subject to availability),” the blurb reads.
Image: Domain
Domain also reminds prospective renters, “Electricity, crockery, cutlery, glassware and linen is included in the lease along with a weekly cleaning service and bathroom amenities from Biology Skincare.”Looks nice but again – for a similar chunk of cash – if we could score a gig working remotely, we’d still be leaning towards disappearing off to the Maldives for a year with our partner.

If you’re ready to take the plunge, don’t delay too much: the hotel is only offering the package from now through until November the 30th, 2020.You’d also have to convince the Australian government to let you leave, in a climate where only around a quarter of overseas travel exemptions have been granted. But hey: what’s life without a little risk? Maybe it’s time to dust off that passport and get shopping for laptops.
