Singapore Airlines just lost its “best in the world” title, with the number one spot in the prestigious Global Skytrax Rankings (the Oscars of the aviation industry) going this year to Qatar Airways.
Qatar were also awarded World’s Best Business Class (a title they’ve won every year since 2016), and Best Airline in the Middle East.
Singapore Airlines dropped to second place (which, considering the number of cashed-up competitors nipping at their heels, isn’t too bad an effort), while Japanese airline ANA All Nippon Airways came third.
News.com.au calls Skytrax “the leading global authority on airline and airport service quality” while CNN considers their awards amongst “the most prestigious in the business” due to their longstanding reputation (19 years!) and consumer involvement.
As News.com.au reports, “The ratings are based on the world’s largest passenger satisfaction survey, which took place from September 2018 to May 2019 with online voting in English, French, Spanish, Japanese, Chinese and Russian.”
A healthy mix of respondents, you might say, with 21.65 million eligible entries all up.
Other notable outcomes — especially for Australians — were Qantas returning to the top 10 for the first time in three years, and Virgin Australia slipping down to 25th, after their 22nd ranking in 2018.
To see who won some of the quirkier awards (best flight attendants, cleanest cabin etc.) head to the Skytrax website. Otherwise, we’ll leave a list of the overall Top 10 Airlines of 2019 below.
1. Qatar Airways
2. Singapore Airlines
3. ANA All Nippon Airways
4. Cathay Pacific
5. Emirates
6. EVA Air
7. Hainan Airlines
8. Qantas Airways
9. Lufthansa
10. Thai Airways

Over the last few years, Americans have concerned themselves more with what they consume than ever before. This has come along with the exultation of fat and protein and the demonisation of refined carbohydrates and sugar. The result? A low carb Homestyle Cooking explosion in which 21st-century office workers (myself included) attempt to make 20-ingredient Smoothie Bowls using a host of products our ‘paleolithic’ ancestors were unlikely to ever have set eyes on (spoiler: cavemen didn’t eat matcha).Don’t believe us? Just check out NutriBullet’s cool 1.5 million annual turnover…Anyway — vernacular accuracy aside — in terms of health the Paleo and Keto diets certainly have their benefits. However, when it comes to visiting France, carb-averse tourists have a nasty shock in store. They are no longer special.Don’t believe us? Before you rebut with a gif of a dancing croissant — hear us out.The French already follow a Ketogenic (esque) diet, complete with (a version of) intermittent fasting and all. But because they have been doing it for hundreds of years, anyone going to painstaking lengths to cut all carbohydrates out of their diet or — god forbid — start counting their macros in a 5 star restaurant, is treated with as much suspicion as someone who reads Self Help instead of Sartre. Also — although croissants contain some carbohydrates — they are essentially a fat bomb, taken ritually with an espresso or noisette; the Parisian equivalent of bulletproof coffee.

So, to avoid being seen as The Absurd incarnate, when you visit France try to keep your dietary requirements to yourself, eat your bread, and watch your waistline and propensity to suffer a heart attack shrink (seriously: check out The French Paradox). Also: to the American tourists who have a Reddit thread dedicated to the question, “How difficult is it to eat keto in France?”, take note of the following Healthy Meals observation.“The people of France have the lowest obesity rate out of the world’s top 35 developed countries, and lower cholesterol, and lower incidents of heart disease than most countries……and regularly eat large amounts of fatty (keto friendly) foods like cream, butter and cheese.”
“They (also) eat a certain proportion of carbs proteins and fats in a day, they are taught this from a very young age, and it’s culturally normal to eat this way.”
Of course, keto is more restrictive with carbs than your french grand-mère, but as, in France, carbohydrate servings tend to be small, their culture has never felt the need to swing drastically the other way, as seems to be happening on the other side of the Atlantic. In fact, ironically — and somewhat worryingly — it appears the French are revolting against their own status quo, with The Economist’s 1843 magazine recently reporting on the decline of bespoke French cooking and the rise of the processed food industry.

In less than a decade low carb diets have gone from being laughed at by doctors to revered by everyone from Lebron James to Kim Kardashian. And after the “fat makes you fat” myth was busted, and people realised that sugar and refined carbohydrates are the real enemies, what else would you expect?Suffice to say: people took to the Keto diet like Instagram takes to a shapely pair of glutes.Assuming you do your research (and bloodwork) this is good news, as it means you will start eating less processed junk. However, going ‘low carb’ can make it harder for you to hit your recommended daily quota of dietary fibre. This is a real problem; not only is fibre crucial for keeping you ‘regular’, but its consumption has also been associated, in various studies, with living longer.Fortunately, as podcast host Sam Harris and award-winning science journalist Gary Taubes famously discussed, it’s possible to eat a diet both high in fibre and low in carbs — you just have to know where to look. That in mind, here are 11 healthy, low carb foods, that are high in fibre and — most importantly — tasty!
- Leafy greens (oh hey there, green smoothie bowl…)
- Cabbage (if you’re not keen on the taste, try sauerkraut)
- Flax seeds (chuck them in with anything)
- Coconut flakes (as above)
- Chia seeds (make sure to soak them in water first)
- Avocado (make sure you have a house deposit saved up first)
- Blackberries (no brainer)
- Broccoli (not a fan? Squeeze some lemon over it)
- Psyllium husk (try the health food aisle)
- Cauliflower (avoid this one if you are on a low fodmap diet)
- Nuts (eat raw for best effect)

At some point, we’ve all dreamt of a yacht full of lustful excess and more champagne than you can pop a cork at. Unfortunately, investing in the stock market is not necessarily going to make all that happen. But a man can dream and if you’ve got some spare shekels at your disposal then boy does Davide Bosio (CEO and head of corporate finance at DJ Carmichael) have some insights for you.
What’s Hot?
The hot sector right now as Bosio sees it is gold.
And what a time to be getting into it. Last week the price punched through the $1900 a mark in Aussie dollar terms. That is a nearly 18 per cent swing up since August last year.
“Given some of the global headwinds — things like what’s happening in Europe with Brexit, what’s happening with the US-China tariffs — we’ve just seen gold really, really strong,” Bosio told Stockhead.
“Some of the guys like Northern Star and Evolution have very, very strong balance sheets, they’re sitting on a lot of cash, have fantastic production profiles.
And anyone who is building strong resources and reserves are in the hot seat, because at some point these bigger companies are just going to want to buy to replace their ounces. They’ll just be eyeing these assets.”
Top Picks
Bosio’s top pick is Black Cat Syndicate (ASX:BC8), which has a market cap of around $14m at a share price of 23c.
Black Cat made its debut on the ASX in January last year with the help of DJ Carmichael.
The company has a shallow gold resource in the prospective Bulong region just 20km from WA’s gold mining hub, Kalgoorlie.
The Bulong region was host to the past-producing high-grade Queen Margaret mine, which was last mined in 1913.
Bosio said Bulong was once multiple patches of ground owned by different prospectors, but Black Cat came along and stitched up the highly prospective landholding into one big package.
Black Cat is also headed by Paul Chapman and Les Davis – the founders of successful gold producer Silver Lake Resources (ASX:SLR).
“We like the management, we like the project, we like the proximity to Kalgoorlie, it just ticks a lot of boxes,” Bosio said.
Next on Bosio’s list is Spectrum Metals (ASX:SPX), which has a market value of around $25m at a share price of 2.1c.
The hook? Bosio says Spectrum has picked itself up a past-producing mine that is high-grade – up to 20 grams per tonne (g/t).
Generally, anything over about 5g/t is considered high-grade.
Spectrum made a new high-grade discovery at the Penny West gold mine earlier this year that sent its share price up as much as 675 per cent to a 52-week high of 3.1c
“They’ve had a fantastic run on the back of really positive drilling and the Penny West mine historically produced around 80,000 ounces running at around 20 grams per tonne,” Bosio said.
“So it’s a huge prize if they can really build out the size of this orebody.”
DJ Carmichael recently helped Spectrum raise $5m.
“We think it’s just a terrific story that’s only going to get better because now they’ve got the money to just drill the hell of this asset,” Bosio said.
Lastly, Bosio likes Alt Resources (ASX:ARS), which has a market cap of less than $6m at a share price of 2c.
DJ Carmichael also recently helped Alt raise money.
Alt Resources’ flagship asset is the Mt Ida gold project, which includes the Bottle Creek mine, in Western Australia.
“They are in the Mt Ida region, which is a highly prospective region around the Menzies area,” Bosio said.
“Menzies is a bit like the forgotten goldfields and it’s starting to come back into vogue.”
Bosio said Alt Resources looks attractive on a peer comparison basis.
“What we like about Alt Resources is they’re quite cheap in relative terms and they do have resources already in place,” he said.
“They’ve got over 400,000 ounces now. We think relative to their peers they’re very cheap.”
“They’ve got sufficient money to do their immediate exploration initiatives and if they can build this resource up from 400,000 ounces to 750,000-1 million ounces over time with some smart exploration work, I think that’s going to start looking very, very attractive for any company that wants a good resource or inventory to start a potential mining project in that region.”
DJ Carmichael owns shares in all three small cap stocks mentioned.
And — full disclosure — Davide Bosio joined DJ Carmichael in January 2014. He has over 18 years of experience in the stockbroking industry and leads the team with a focus on resources, specifically in relation to capital raisings and M&A advice. The team have led a significant number of transactions in the gold sector with an emphasis on high-grade opportunities in Western Australia.

Gerbil-like monstrosities blight the top lips of many men today. But that’s not what we’re here to talk about. No: today we have a majestic example of what every hombre should aspire to — a damn fine moustache and a loyal as heck dog.
Unfortunately, said man, who goes by the Reddit username of u/sapperdanman, was so harangued by his girlfriend to remove the sublime piece of fuzz, that he eventually gave in.
In a twist of fate, however, it was the short-lived nature of the moustache that has made it so famous — it was only because he had to shave it off that he decided to take a photoshoot with it, thus going viral in ‘post mortemity.’
All the best facial hair dies young.
Fellow Redditors expressed their deepest admiration and sympathies, with tributes flowing into the Reddit thread in their thousands.
- “Ernest Hemingway would be jealous.”
- “Your moustache is now history.”
- “Put it back.”
- “I don’t know why his girlfriend made him shave it, it looks good.”
- “It really tied the face together.”
And, simply, “Beautiful.”

Picture this: you’ve just settled into your $11,000 seat, ready to do some work, get a good night’s sleep, and enjoy the serene, adult playpen that Business Class is supposed to be, when five mewling infants start competing to see who can best drown out the jet engines. Even worse — they appear to be stuck on this setting for the foreseeable future — despite their parent’s lacklustre efforts.
Worst case scenarios aside, this raises the question — is it ethical to submit passengers who have paid a premium for a high-quality flight experience to the mere possibility of having to listen to your screaming kids, when you could have simply flown economy — a cheaper zone where people have already (largely) resigned themselves to discomfort?
Controversial? Sure. But this is the conclusion many Frequent Flyers and Tripadvisor Reviewers have been driven to after enduring one spoilt trip too many. Not to mention this Quora thread, which highlights the two conflicting points of view.
While some flyers argued “it’s adult passengers who are most annoying” and said that most of the time the kids “are nice and quiet”, others firmly disagreed.
“I’ve asked airlines to create children zones where they once had smoker sections. No reply … Perhaps some day. Till then, carry hearing protection.”
This was backed up by more logical points like, “Those who fly business class have a reasonable expectation of a somewhat quiet environment where, if you wanted to, you could do serious work,” and, “We aren’t trying to be snooty, we’re just trying to be effective with our livelihoods.”
Of course: people with kids should still be able to travel, but in the interests of fairness you should bite the bullet and fly economy because — in the long run — this will actually benefit you (think of the savings), your child (if they grow up with this what are they going to have to look forward to?) and everyone else around you.
Before you interject with: “Well it’s worse for the Economy passengers,” don’t worry — we’ve already thought this through and it can be summed up in one sentence: “What’s one more crying baby?”
Also — and before you start claiming I wouldn’t know the difference “just one more crying baby” would make from my Ivory & Perrier Jouet Tower, guess what? I’ve only ever flown Business Class once in my life. And the crying babies weren’t even that bad (they stopped soon after takeoff).
This case is being made from the countless long-haul Economy trips I have taken where I whacked on my noise cancelling headphones and would have been oblivious to the 0.2-decibel increase one more crying baby would have made to an already noise-saturated cabin.
The only problem I can see is that if kids were banned from Business then there could be a large scale migration to Economy.
But this could be solved with a quota system, surely? And while some self-important feathers might get ruffled, the majority would take it on the chin and understand that with all the tax breaks families get, they are still actually winning…

Men’s sandals say more about your fashion sense than you probably realise. And whether you are a ‘sports slides’ by the pool guy, a ‘Vespa and rolled up trousers’ guy, or a leather Birkenstock loving ‘swag man’, you are going to want to purchase the best men’s sandals to suit your ‘look’.
While we admit it’s hardly neuroscience, from personal experience, misunderstood ‘resort chic’ invitations and many wasted dollars spent, we can tell you this purchasing decision is not as simple as it seems. Firstly, you need to decide what style of men’s sandals are best for you.
Australians hold onto their ‘thongs’ with vice-like grips, for example (that’s flip-flops for those who live everywhere else), yet the influx of slides now dominates the vast majority of beaches and poolsides.
You also have the more sophisticated options to contend with, using materials including leather and suede, for pairs that can comfortably be paired with a pair of chino shorts and a smart button-down shirt for evening drinks on the town.
With style taken care of, it’s time to start checking out the brands making waves in the mens’ sandals category, and that’s where we come in. From lesser-known Japanese brands like Suicoke, suave British manufacturers like Grenson, Moroccan Mirage labels like Casablanca 1942 and haute couture favourites like Valentino and Saint Laurent, there is an abundance of shoemakers to consider.
And that’s before you even get onto men’s sandal staples like Birkenstock, premium offerings like Gucci, Irish-Italian fusions like O’Keeffe, classics like Ancient Greek Sandals and, of course, Prada (recommended by Satan himself).
Best Men’s Sandals FAQ
Which material is best for men's sandals?
Both leather and rubber are excellent choices for men's sandals as they are both durable and stylish. The best men’s sandals should incorporate premium materials and easygoing wearability.
Should I size up or down for sandals?
For men's sandals, it is best to buy one size bigger. This will ensure that you have extra room and prevent your toes or heels from overhanging.
How to style sandals for the summer?
Black, grey and earthy shades are the most versatile colour for men's sandals. Pair then with jeans and casual tee for a relaxed look. Jean shorts call for a more casual option like slides.

If it hasn’t already, the internet could still ruin your life. Just think about it: every 1am DM slide, every secret selfie, every ‘hilarious’ group chat, just sitting there in a great big dirty pile of metadata. And it’s not just Zuckerburg — anyone who has hacked into Facebook, during the various security breaches that have occurred over the years could have access to this info too.For some reason though, for most of us, the idea of Russian hackers going through our digital underwear isn’t enough to deter us from using the same password for everything, taking advantage of the free wifi at Starbucks and flirting shamelessly on Instagram. You gottta what you gotta do, right? Some of these activities are fine. Others, however, leave you open to a cyber attack. But when there’s so much misinformation and digital superstition out there (as anyone who was ever tricked into copy/pasting a legal declaration as their Facebook status should well know), it can be hard to tell.Fortunately, we just listened in on a conversation between Sam Harris (neuroscientist, philosopher and podcast host) and Zeynep Tufekci (faculty associate at the Harvard Berkman Center for Internet and Society) in which Tufekci reveals the most important things you need to do to keep yourself safe online — and the surprising things that aren’t worth bothering with.
Update your Software
According to Tufekci, if your phone or computer suggests an update, it’s usually about security.
“I understand sometimes it comes with tweaks you don’t like but given the state of things updating your software is the number one piece of advice you would hear from a security professional.”
Secure Your Primary Email
“If they can get into that they can get into everything else.”
Buy A Gmail Security Key
The best way to secure your primary email, if you use Gmail, is with a security key, which you can get on Amazon for $17.99.As Tufekci explains, “It’s this blue key that allows you to add a second layer of protection so that no-body can log into your account unless the physical key is inserted into the computer.”
“This makes it less likly for you to get personally and viciously hacked.”
Write Your Passwords Down
This one’s counter-intuitive, but the chances that someone is going to break into your desk at your office is pretty low, so writing your passwords down is the “least worst” way to keep them safe if you can’t be bothered to use a password manager.
Don’t Use The Same Password For Everything
If you use the same password for lots of sites, as Tufekci warns, “When one of them gets hacked they now have your email and password for that site and they will try it out on all the other sites and eventually get you.”
Consider Buying An iPhone
“If you’re doing any sensitive work, I don’t like having to say this — but it’s true — you have to use an Apple iPhone.”According to Tufekci, Androids are just not updated frequently enough and their patchwork — which came from the idea that it could be a nice open system — leaves you more vulnerable to a cyber attack.“Your best defence is hiding behind somebody whos going to protect you — maybe at the expense of closing down the platform — and that’s what Apple has done.
“It keeps a very tight reign (and) prioritizes keeping your software secure.”
“If Google steps up, she added, “I’ll be happy to recommend them.” However, until then, if you’re going to use an Android phone the only ones “remotely acceptable” (for journalists, activists, dissidents and the like) are the Nexus or the Pixel “because at least they get their security updates.”
Get A Chromebook
Chromebooks are cheap and very hard to hack. You just have to be careful about what Google can collect from them, which Tufekci says can be done by tweaking the settings.
Don’t Bother With Anti Virus
Updating your software is more important.
Use Whatsapp Or Signo For Sensitive Conversations
If you have sensitive conversations you don’t want anyone to read use Signo or Whatsapp on your phone instead of Gmail, SMS or Facebook. Whatsapp is encrypted on either end so the only thing Facebook (Whatsapp’s parent company) can see, through metadata, is who you’re talking to (but not what you’re saying). Signo is even more covert — they can’t even see who you are talking too, as a recent court case in which they came up with nothing, despite being subpoenaed, showed.
Using Free Wifi Is Not A Problem
“The biggest consideration is that they can probably see what you’re doing … but if you’ve got an up to date operating system they probably aren’t able to do much with you.”
