The Jackson 5 made the afro pop-culture cool, before Jimmy Hendrix took it to rockstar status. Then, Andre 3000 showed us how to groove along with it, ‘Hey Ya’-style. And, we were hooked. The pinnacle of natural black hair – the afro, is a legendary icon of cool. And it’s seeing a resurgence in men’s hair this season. Seen Quest on Jimmy Fallon recently?
A unique hair style for men, not only are specific genetics required to grow an afro, but the boisterous hairdo needs a certain attitude to pull it off – rocking the big, curly ‘fro like a style boss. And not Disco Stu.
To get you in the retro mood, we’ve collated a slideshow showcasing 50 cool ways to rock the afro. Then, read on to learn the official afro rules – from styling to maintenance.
Simple Rules To Follow When Growing/Maintaining An Afro
- The afro needs shampooing less to prevent dryness – so once a week is fine. Select a sulfate-free shampoo that has enough moisturising elements to keep your hair hydrated – until the next wash.
- A conditioner is essential. Afro hair should be conditioned after shampooing – selecting a product specially formulated for ‘thick and curly’ hair.
- Post-conditioning is also important as the afro needs to remain dampish and moisturised to prevent tangling. A leave in conditioner spread evenly over the curls is best.
- Fingers are the best tool to detangle the afro. Otherwise, a wide-tooth comb helps maintain a dread-lock free fro. Or a natural-bristle brush for heavy duty detangling.
- The natural oils secreted by the scalp are a great way to moisturise. Gently comb these oils from root to tip each morning.
- Oils need to be applied from external sources when the afro becomes very dry. Pomegranate seed oil is a great massage oil for the scalp, moving from the hairline to the tips. Then cover the hair with plastic wrap, heating the head a little using a hairdryer. Leave for 20 minutes.
- Braids and man-buns help prevent tangling, particularly when playing sport or at the gym.
- When asleep, cover the afro with a scarf as the friction from the pillow can break the curls.
Final Word
Short, long, fuzzy or refined, the afro does need a lot of tender loving care to keep it looking its best. When sleeping, in the morning during get-ready time, and throughout the day with those quick moisturising touch ups, the potential dryness of the hair needs tending to more than other men’s hair styles.
But, it’s certainly worth the hassle; rocking a killer ‘fro like no one else on your block. If you can grow it, own it. And like a good shoe, jacket or tie, let the afro be your personal style signifier.

This story was originally published on GizmodoThe drinking patterns of over 200 Australians were put under the microscope in a recent study, which found while only 28 per cent of us drink at levels above two per day, this group is drinking 84 per cent of the total alcohol consumed. This suggests just over a quarter of us are drinking more than four fifths of all the alcohol combined. This is not good. That means more than half of of the alcohol drunk in Australia is drunk in a way that is outside the recommended guidelines of two Australian standard drinks (ASD) per day.The study found that proportionally, liqueurs and cask wines were the drinks most often consumed at risky levels, although the greater popularity of beer, bottled wine and spirits meant that they had larger number of drinks consumed above the guidelines. The study was funded by the Foundation for Alcohol Research and Education, an independent, charitable organisation working to prevent the harmful use of alcohol in Australia.Gizmodo explores the smart design, breakthrough science and awe-inspiring tech shaping your future.Follow Gizmodo on Facebook and Twitter.By Rae Johnston – Gizmodo

You’ve finally accrued enough vacation days to kiss the office goodbye, pack your bags, and give your brain and body the break they need.
But what restorative locale will be your destination? Self-described “data guy and digital nomad” Ryan Whitacker has the answer in a handy tool.
Whitacker built an interactive map to help you find the best time to visit anywhere in the world based on your weather preferences. To discover your perfect destination, enter the date you plan to travel and select your ideal maximum, minimum, and average temperature. You may also decide how strict to be about avoiding rainfall if getting wet is not your thing.
If you already know the date you’ll be on holiday, input your desired temperatures and click to the date you’d like. If you have a place in mind but not exact dates, try zooming in on the location and clicking through to a week.
Whitacker’s own travels inspired the creation of the map.
“I often found myself searching Google for things like, ‘best places to visit in January’ or ‘best time to visit Spain’,” he writes. “I was almost always disappointed with the results. I’d usually find anecdotes and broad date ranges with no supporting data whatsoever. In most cases I got the feeling that recommendations were coming from paid authors who had never even been to the place, let alone often enough to make a date recommendation.”
Like any good “data guy” with wanderlust, Whitacker took matters into his own hands. He downloaded ten years of weather data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration from more than 10,000 weather stations around the world. All told, he gathered 35 million lines of data to work with. After some technical and visual wizardry, he had a functioning tool to display average temperatures and precipitation for any given area by week.
Though Whitacker originally created the map to be his own personal guide, he generously decided to share it with the world. He even built two versions: one in Celsius and one in Fahrenheit. Check them out and with just a few clicks, you could have your next trip planned in perfect weather.

Consider the humble garage, an under-appreciated space that houses hoarder levels of junk (which you swear you’ll clean out someday so there’s room for your car) and has launched some of the world’s most famous bands and tech companies.
In the capable hands of the right architect, living in one isn’t a backup plan when college doesn’t work out and you move back in with your parents. Sam Crawford’s converted garage in Sydney shows us just how good Plan A garage living can look.
The long, narrow site in the heart of Darlinghurst was previously a commercial garage and is bounded by terrace houses on all sides. That unusual set-up necessitated intelligent planning to maximise sun penetration and flexible living. Heritage constraints further required the street-front room to retain its existing ceiling height, and the façade was similarly protected.
Sam Crawford Architects worked masterfully within those many restrictions to unveil a modern, masculine, and light-filled dwelling we would happily call home.
Upon entering, visitors are greeted by tall, well-lit living space. Black steel, recycled brick, concrete, and timber form a palette that combines heavy durability with warmth, bridging the gap between the building’s industrial history and its new use. An internal courtyard provides abundant natural light and a welcome glimpse of green in an ultra-urban context.
While we’re fans of the entire space, we have to give a special shoutout to the kitchen. The concrete countertops are stunning, and we love the artsy look of the holes in the upper wood cabinets. It makes a statement while remaining sophisticated – which is how we’d sum up the entire home, now that we think about it.

One hasn’t experienced excess until they can say that they’ve raced Ferrari go-karts atop of the world’s latest luxury cruise ship.
And would you look at that, just on cue the Norwegians have unveiled their latest behemoth in luxury cruising named, wait for it…Norwegian Joy. Disregard the fact that it sounds like a European brothel and you’re left with a 3,850 passenger cruise ship which is 3.6 times heavier than the Titanic. For the thinkers out there that’s 168,800 tonnes of floating steel. Norwegian Joy was built specifically to target the cashed-up Chinese and it certainly disappoint with a plethora of leisurely pursuits to embark on at sea.
The most outstanding (for us at least) includes a Ferrari Go-Kart track on the top deck which was created in partnership with Scuderia Ferrari. The zippy track includes straights, overpasses and heaps of figure eights to ensure ample overtaking opportunities for those involved. Leave the track and you’re into the sea. Okay, we made the latter part up.
Passengers who have forked out the cash for the more expensive cabins will receive a free pass to the Ferrari Go-Karts whilst all other will need to pay as per theme park ride.
Watch the video above of the massive ship being hauled out of its shed to reveal an actual track. That’s right – it’s no concept, people.
BYO banana peels.

Conventional wine cellars conjure images of dank underground dugouts. But in 2017, dusty and stale cellars are long gone.
Once a feature of the uber-wealthy and their ostentatious mansions, cellars are popping up everywhere. No longer relegated to the basement, they’re finding their way above ground in prolific numbers. Why? Because we’re a bunch of winos and domestic collections are popping up in homes on almost every street in the country.
When your collection has outgrown boring wine racks, it’s time to consider a cellar. Want a masculine cellar? No worries. We’ve rounded up the top ten qualities every man’s cellar should possess.
Temperature Control
The #1 most important aspect of a successful cellar is temperature control. Never skimp on this part, or think you don’t need it. If you truly value your collection, storing it appropriately is essential. An average of 12 degrees is the agreed ideal temperature for reds, while 7 degrees suits white vintages. Without proper temperature control, wines will become exposed to oxygen (a no-no for a perfectly aged vino) and mature prematurely.
Tech Friendly
A man’s cellar should come with all the bells and whistles. We’re talking temperature and humidity control, futuristic lighting, wine fridges and maybe a big-screen TV. Don’t forget to install dimmer controls for evenings when your lady friend is visiting.
Materials
Inject some masculinity into your wine ‘den’ with materials of the wood and stone varieties. For something a little more contemporary, opt for stainless steel. Not only does it look sleek and masculine, steel has the added benefit of being easy to clean and keeps germs at bay.
Always choose woods that resist rot and deal with cool, moist conditions. A natural, oil-based finish looks great when teamed with stainless steel or glass.
Glass
There’s nothing sadder than an unseen collection. After dropping all that coin to kit out a new cellar, get your money’s worth with glass doors to ensure the collection – and the space – is always on display. Floor to ceiling door are popular, with curved designs becoming more common.
Lighting
Lighting is key to a functional and sexy cellar. Highlight prized wines with a combination of traditional, track and LED lighting. For traditional lighting, be sure to buy bulbs with UV protective coating. Halogen set-ups need to be frosted and tempered to avoid over-heating. Really impress your guests with LED lighting. Take inspiration from the ‘Fine Wine Shrine’ in Tennessee. We’d worship at the shrine of these lights any day.
Spiral Cellar
As you descend a spiral cellar, you’ll be forgiven for assuming the identity of James Bond, Batman and every awesome crime-fighting dude rolled in to one. These built-in cellars are expensive, but so worth it. Smart engineering and built-in ventilation keeps humidity at bay while keeps bottles at the ideal temperature regardless of the weatherman’s predictions.
Table Manners
Grab the boys and some bottles for a game of poker around a statement table. The style and materials will depend on your cellar’s design aesthetic. Take inspiration from this impressive cellar.
Tasting Area
The ‘tasting area’ doesn’t need to look as fancy as it sounds. An oak barrel surrounded by half a dozen stools will suffice.
Seating
Plush loungers: Every man’s cellar needs a plush seat or two where you can get down to serious man stuff like cigar smoking and cognac tasting.
Wooden bar stools: As well as the aforementioned seats, some wooden stools are a must. They will give your cellar a relaxed bar-atmosphere where you can knock back a bottle or two.
Oak Barrels
A cellar without an oak barrel is an injustice. Use them creatively for a rustic, masculine ambiance.

Sometimes, you need to get rid of complications in your life and bring it back to the bare essentials. This goes for your watch too. Simplifying your watch gives it a clean aesthetic, making the watch suitable for smart-casual or formal occasions.
The watches we’re showing here today are the purest expressions of a timepiece: hours and minutes, possibly a seconds hand, and nothing else – as purity of design is key for these watches.
In this story…
NOMOS Glashutte Tangente 38

One of the four original models released by the brand in 1992, the NOMOS Glashutte Tangente 38 continues its clean design aesthetic in a slightly more modern case size. The dial is silvered, with thin blue hands for the hours, minutes and seconds subdial. The arabic numerals are slim, with a touch of art-deco in their design, combined with the simple, functional case echoes the codes of the Bauhaus school of design in their minimalist approach to the design of the watch.
NOMOS Glashutte prides itself on being a manufacturer of movements, and the Tangente 38 is no exception. Housed within the stainless steel case is the Alpha movement, complete with German finishing features such as the three-quarter plate, Glashutte sunburst on the ratchet wheel, and blued screws.
Longines Heritage 1945

Released at Baselworld 2017, the Longines Heritage 1945 brings back the old-world elegance of wristwatches, when the concept of a wristwatch was still gaining traction in the world. An exercise in purity, the watch features nothing but hours, minutes and seconds, with a copper coloured dial accentuating the vintage origins of the watch.
Arabic numerals are placed on every second hour, and a round marker takes place of the odd number hours, giving the dial an uncluttered feel. The slim stainless steel case, combined with the aged look beige leather completes the vintage look, and is complete with an automatic movement providing 42 hours of power reserve.
Rolex Explorer

For Sir Edmund Hillary, nothing but a Rolex Chronometer would suffice for his ascent of Mount Everest. Supplied by Rolex with what would become the modern Explorer, he made his ascent along with Sherpa Tenzing Norgay in 1953, becoming the first to summit the legendary mountain, with a Rolex accompanying him on his ascent.
The modern Rolex Explorer continues that legacy with a simple display that leaves nothing to chance. With numerals at 3, 6 and 9 o’clock, the dial sets the standard for a quintessential tool watch. Highly legible hands and markers are the only accents on this watch, illuminated by Chromalight – a long lasting luminescent material that is proprietary to Rolex.
Couple this no-nonsense dial with the Rolex Calibre 3132 that is chronometer certified, and you have a great tool watch designed to last the ages.
Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Ultra Thin Small Second

Not only a great dress watch, the Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Ultra Thin Small Second takes the simple minimalist concept of hours, minutes and small seconds, and refines it, creating added value and celebrating the watchmaker’s art.
Combining a slim case and a silver dial, the watch is as paired back as possible, while the applied markers, and the hands that carry a polished and matte finish accentuate the finishing of the dial.
The design of the case carries small flourishes, such as the bevelling on the lugs and the thin polished bezel, giving the watch presence on the wrist, whilst remaining restrained in its proportions.
Piaget Altiplano

For the Altiplano’s 60th anniversary, an ultra-thin watch was created and limited to just 360 examples worldwide.
The colour itself is a thing of beauty with a blue dial wrapped in a 43mm white gold case to exude the elegance worthy of the Altiplano name. Inside the timepiece resides the Manufacture Piaget 1200P ultra-thin self-winding movement which drives the central hours and minutes.
The caseback also features a sapphire crystal to ensure the refined finish of the mechanics and anthracite-grey oscillating weight featuring the Piaget coat-of-arms can be viewed in all of its glory. A blue alligator-skin strap polishes things off immaculately whilst still pertaining to the design ethics of minimalism.
Baume & Mercier Classima

The Classima range spans across a range of thirty different variations but the one that will pull at your minimalist heartstrings is the Ref. 10218 model which boasts a date window and dual time function on smaller counter.
The watch is specifically made for the up-and-coming generation and tomorrow’s talents which in real world speak means it’s very accessible for a Baume & Mercier piece. A clean white dial wears Roman numerals and elegant indexes which helps to channel the classic look set in a 40mm steel case.
A Swiss made Quartz movement meanwhile keeps everything on time in a robust little package that’s further paired with an elegant alligator strap to ensure seamless timekeeping from the office to the after hours.
Glashutte Original Sixties

Chronographs rarely fall into the minimalist camp but when it wears the Glashutte name then the game has changed. The watchmaker’s 2017 release of the Iconic Sixties Square comes in five new colourways and the same squared-off cushion case and a bright dial.
This coincides the new range with those from the past decades under Soviet occupation. The influences from this are evident through the curved numerals, svelte cases and bold hues. The case itself is a 41.35mm stainless steel item which houses Glashutte Original’s in-house caliber 39-34, an an automatic chronograph movement which affords a 40-hour power reserve.
MeisterSinger No.1

It doesn’t get any more minimalistic than the single handed watches of MeisterSinger. Inspired from the sundial and single-handed clock towers of a bygone era, the MeisterSinger No.1 has picked up a slew of design awards since its conception more than a decade ago.
Today its signature design remains intact with a hand-wound Sellita SW 210 driving the single hand on a white dial with incremental indexes so users can determine the minutes in between the hour markers.
The watch affords a 42 hour power reserve and is housed in a 43mm stainless steel case wearing a domed sapphire face.
